it was amazing
bookshelves: childrensbooks, schoolstory, 20th-century, united-states

I guess this was the first boarding school book I read, and perhaps should be blamed for a lifetime's obsession! It is certainly a leebossa book, and it is distressing that Ursula Nordstrom burnt the sequel before it could be published.

Wendy We can only assume that she decided the sequel was ick-en-spick.

What's interesting is that when I read this book as an adult, it was practically a different book from the one I reread over and over as a kid... I didn't get any kind of deeper meaning from it then.

Wendy I know, right? Even Mother Carrie was cooler than Victoria's mother.

Betsy What I remember is the game Victoria played with the silverware. Sometimes when I'm unloading the dishwasher, I still think of it fondly. Have you two read "Dear Genius: The Letters of Ursula Nordstrom"? She was just as cool as Mother Carrie, if not cooler.

CLM I finally ordered Dear Genius, although there is NO ROOM for it on my shelves.

Lisa Vegan I just saw your review, Constance. Burned the sequel?! A sequel would have been welcomed, if it had been good.

I've just reread the first several pages but I'm enjoying it more than I had expected, so far anyway.

Sally Me,too! This book made me want to go to boarding school!

Wendy This book made me want to have my own secret language, which I do now, with my family.

Sherry I love everything everyone has said about this book !!!! I too had all of these ideas and feelings. And a sequel??!!?? That would have been so great !!!
