This was actually my second go at this much acclaimed book. While it was good, it did not have the "greatness" so many people ascribe to this book. I found the narrator being death added a certain poignancy to the telling. He/she was a character we never really got to know but was ever present in the telling of the tale. There were parts of the book that were esoteric and I am not usually a big fan of using one's imagination to figure out meaning and motive so these parts tended to bother me. The book seemed a bit choppy and did not flow the way I wanted it to.

The writing was good, something that I believe would capture the minds of a Young Adult reader. I believe at least for me, the problem I encountered was that there seemed to be no conclusion. The ending just ended not really tied up well at all. I think I wanted more out of it than I got which is probably my issue not the book's.

While I am glad that I had a second chance to read this book, I don't think I will revisit it again. I think I am happy I can say I read it, but again question why this is on so many people's top ten list. It was a fine journey but at the end there wasn't any ah ha's coming from my head. Perhaps again I butted up against a hype. In this case it just was not up to the anticipation one has when reading a book that has garnished so many amazing ratings.

JudiAnne Thanks for the great review. At least now, after reading your review I don't feel like the only one who did not think this book was great. I can see the appeal to the YAs but I don't think it had the depth that it should have had to create a full understanding of what went on in the holocaust. I particularly was irritated by the narration of death. I thought he was truly an undeveloped character and had the author gone into a little bit more characterization, he would have intrigued me more. As I said in my review, I thought this book was a fantastic introduction into the Holocaust but not much more. Again, I know my opinion is unpopular but I have read much better novels of the holocaust.

Martha I'm underwhelmed so far. Will finish it, but would rather be reading something else. Ummm ... like Oscar Wilde maybe :-D

Susanne Nice review Marialyce! You were much kinder than I and your thoughts are much more succinct and so very well said! :)

Marialyce Thanks Susanne! It still boogles my mind that so many love this book. However, we are not alone.
