it was ok
bookshelves: owned-books, horror, disappointments, own-in-paperback, read-in-2009, reviewed

Very overrated...I had high expectations for the book, because of the almost universal applause it gets...and it turned out to be yet another Koontz dog novel.
The characters in this novel are shallow and cardboard - the ex delta force soldier, a widower, falls in love with an abused woman. Of course despite her abuse lasting for years she gets out of the shell in several months and gets pregnant, drives a car, even uses weapons !
The scene when they have weapons hidden all over their house is quite hilarious. Also, of course both of our heroes conveniently either invested their money/or inherited a large sum from a dead aunt, and don't have to work for the rest of their lives...and did I mention that the dog is special ?
2 words: You can read this book if you are a Koontz fan, you might even get engrossed in it, but it's one of those books that you forget the moment you put it back on the shelf.

Bruce It is the first book by Koontz that I've read many many years ago... I think I have a first edition. I have many fond memories of it and am getting ready to read for the third time! But it is also the book that I hold all others to by Koontz. All his books are the same. Guy meets girl, something or someone chases said couple and so on. I still really enjoy this book and know I will years to come. It's a pity that you didn't like it. He has tons of others I'm sure you'll enjoy!!

Maciek I've read probably all of them, and enjoyed quite a lot. I agree with your comment that they're mostly the same. In the long run, you cam mixe many of them up.

nobody i've only read this one and odd thomas, and i wasn't impressed at all. i may give him another go someday, but i'm not excited about it

message 5: by Jane (new) - rated it 1 star

Jane I agree, found myself scanning over endless pages of nothing much happening. Novel could have been quarter the size it is.

Kika23 I agree. Overrated

Maciek Thanks for the comments guys and girls. It's definitely not the best horror novel there is.

Maciek You're welcome, Remi! I think you probably wouldn't enjoy it as much as the first time round.

Jamie Ha! I wrote a very similar review!

And, you are right, as soon as I finished it, I did forget b/c reading about there being a scene involving weapons being stored all over is news to me. Like wise her being pregnant! lol.

Gone AND forgotten!

Maciek Thank you, Jamie! This was indeed bad and is gone and forgotten as you said. And good!

message 11: by Carl (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carl Dude, move the fuck on. If you don't like Koontz, then don't read it. It's funny how all your reviews put down this author, yet you continue to read his books.

Maciek I actually moved the fuck on a while ago - I don't think I'll read any of his new books. But thanks for the advice anyway!

Jamie Lol! I have found Koontz fans to be of the thinned skin variety, for the most part. It's cute that he has such staunch supporters.

Maciek I guess it's different strokes for different folks, Jamie - I honestly couldn't care less how many people enjoy/not enjoy his books, but then I couldn't be bothered to go around and leave comments on reviews of his books.

Palani Muthiah spot on! I just forced myself to finish this book and your review basically reverberated my thoughts. kudos

Maciek Thanks, Palani - and you're welcome!

Michael Weird, it's full of suspense even in the first 100 pages with all the grisly murders being the stand out sequences so far. Maybe you like boring books, I don't know. This is my first Dean Koontz book and it is definitely entertaining.

Maciek I love boring books! Glad you're liking this one.

Tiny Bat :[ Hilarious. There's always a special dog. And no one has to work for money. If only life was like a Dean Koontz novel.

Maciek Agreed. :)

Maciek After you put it this way, I think looking for graffiti in toilets would have been a much better way to spend one's time...

message 22: by Jon (new)

Jon I had to put this book down especially when he introduced the two buddy buddy detectives. . . Then I thought I was being too harsh on the book, until I read about johnny the wire. I don't think DK knows how people really talk

Maciek I don't think so either, Jon!

message 24: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir I have a half dozen Koontz books on my virtual shelf, including this one, but based on boxes of paperbacks in my parents' garage I read quite a few more and forgot them completely.
John Saul, too.

Maciek They're just not very memorable stuff, Miriam. Not something I'd really recommend to anybody!

message 26: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir No. I don't even remember why I kept reading them.
