it was amazing
bookshelves: currently-reading

Being LDS myself and having some of the LDS beliefs extorted, it reminds me of how much I appreciate the truth of the religion and what I do know. Being in the midst of abuse in a personal experience in Utah, the book does hit close to home in many ways and is realistic to the core in some aspects. This would be a great book to use in a group discussion of abused survivors and also a reading group. I am going to go back over it and read it again. Can be a very helpful and almost therapeutic book for survivors/victors of abuse. Carol Hesprich

Carol Hesprich Yes, I do have this book. I would love to have you read it so we could have a discussion about it. The author has claimed to got her info about the priesthood by a friend who was LDS. The LDS must have been experiencing uninfirmed philosphy and practicers or around the males that just did not actually live the gospel. I have dealt with a Bishop Crandal of this novel and then was blessed to have a Bishop White that truly understood the gospel and his calling. In fact, the experience with Bishop White is one of the reasons I defend the church even though I am lazy about attending. I can drop it by your house. CAROL

Autumn Witter It is interesting to hear that you are of the same faith as Pattyn and have experienced the abuse her family endured. I just finished reading a review of the book where an LSD girl was ranting about how inaccurately the book represented the faith. ( /review/show... )

Now coming to your review, I have come to the conclusion that there are two sides to the religion. Ellen Hopkins did not misrepresent the faith, she simply used propaganda which made the readers believe there was no good in it. I agree when you say this "can be a very helpful and almost therapeutic book." Her writing style filled me with beautiful thoughts as well as ugly ones about the world we live in. This is one of my favorite quotes: "God is love," she said. "And He respects love, whether it's between a parent and a child, a man and a woman, or friends. I don't think He cares about religion one little bit. Live your life right, Pattyn. Love with all your heart. Don't hurt others, and help those in need. That's all you need to know. And don't worry about Heaven. If it exists, you'll be welcome." (Hopkins 363) This hits home, because we live in America where most people are judged based on their religion. I have trouble with this in my own home. I live in a household where I am told to prey every night before bed, believe in the bible, and other things that sometimes make me feel uncomfortable. I believe in God, but I'm not sure I believe everything that's supposed to come with him. This book not only questions a faith, but it shares the thoughts of a person who is trying to figure it out. The dialogue about this felt very natural to me and even similar to my own thoughts. I recommend everyone go read this book. The discussions about everyday struggles in life make it worth while. It also is a read that will make you think. I hope you enjoy!
