did not like it
bookshelves: classic, 1920s, reviewed

I'm supposed to love this book. It's a classic. It's the great American novel as an English major I'm supposed to just worship every sentence of the book and praise its brilliance.

I don't like it though. I really don't. In fact, I downright dislike this book.

I hate every character in it. I hate the supposedly brilliant prose. I hate the supposedly clever symbolism. There is not a single thing in this damn book that I enjoy.

But Tim, it's a metaphor for the American Dream and I get it, of course I get it. The symbolism is so blatant, how could I not get it?

Maybe I should reread it? How many times do I need to read it to enjoy it? I read it in Highschool. I read it in college (twice) and read it again years later to give it one last shot. I'm done with it. May I never touch this blasted thing again. 1/5 stars and a hatred that burns with the passion and fire of a thousand stars.

Unless of course Gatsby is actually a Green Lantern, who is staring off into that distant green light as symbolism for his secret identity he is also defeated by something yellow (a weakness of all green lanterns). Maybe when he's off at the parties he's actually off saving the world with super powers! Brilliant! 5/5 stars!

No, it's not that fun. Back to the 1/5.

Nataliya Haha, the weakness of all green lanterns? Love it.

Tim Glad you enjoyed it! :D

Warren Fournier Believe it or not, I never read this in high school. Or maybe I was supposed to and just read the Cliff notes. Either way, I somehow have avoided it because I was afraid I'd have the same reaction as you. Not that every classic on the school syllabus ends up being an overanalyzed miss for me--Ive revisited my share as an adult and thought they were brilliant. But my Spidey-sense tells me to slip this one, to use another superhero reference. Anyway, great review!

Ronald Maybe I should write a negative review of a novel I had to read in high school, A Separate Peace.

Tim Medical Patents Are Murder wrote: "Hahaha, I liked it but I am completely sympathetic. My only defense of this book is that it's secretly very gay."

In college one of the papers I wrote was actually a queer theory interpretation of the novel, so I can completely agree with this.

I also wrote about it from a Marxist perspective as well as just a general interpretation of it as one of my classes was nothing but reinterpreting this novel from multiple perspectives (this did not increase my enjoyment of the book)

I was never actually assigned that one!

message 7: by John (new)

John Turner I'm with you, Tim. I've tried to read it 4 or 5 times and just can't do it. I've liked neither movie nor the stage play. I find the characters unlikable and uninteresting.

Kevin Carson My reaction to Moby Dick, exactly. I've been told so many times that all the endless, boring whale lore is really biting satire, but I fucking hate it.

Vicky "phenkos" You're not alone, Tim...

Diane Wallace Honest review, Tim!

Beverly I have read it twice too Tim, once in high school and recently and I disliked it both times. Ha! I loved your review!
