Really about a 1.5* for me . . . but the writing is exceptional and the author deserves a better grade for it to be quite honest (if it hadn't been so well "drawn," there's no way in hell I could have finished this book!). However, the two protagonists are probably two of the least likeable people I've ever read as leads in a book. Considering the number of books I've read (the ones I've shelved here are only the ones I've read in the last three years or so) . . . that saying a LOT!

Fans of "Stormfire," and apparently there are many, must love "angst" in a storyline beyond reason. Not for me!

鈾arlyn P鈾 K - Whaaa?!! Are you punishing yourself? A 500+ page controversial bodice ripper from '84? Brave lady!! Hope it's good!! :-)

message 2: by Eastofoz (new) - added it

Eastofoz Ahhh, the famous Stormfire! I still have this baby on TBR. How's it going so far?

message 4: by MelissaB (new)

MelissaB You are so brave K! You might need a few comfort reads once you make it through this one.

Danielle The Book Huntress Definitely, Melissa!

message 6: by AgentScully (new)

AgentScully I'm running far, far away from this book.

message 7: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A Wow, ok, I read Verity's review of this book and OMGoodness! No way could I ever read this one. I'm with Agent. I'm running far, far, far, far away from this book. Just after reading her review I felt like I needed to indulge in some Lynsay Sands happy historical romances!

Danielle The Book Huntress LOL, Lynsey. Reading this was certainly an experience. I don't need to repeat it, though.

message 9: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A I'm sure it was an experience. Now, I can read a book with a cruel hero and in fact have read some old bodice rippers that are completely un-pc but this one was just waaaaay outside my comfort zone.

Danielle The Book Huntress Yeah, I can read a cruel hero and bodice ripper, pretty much questionable kind of stories, but there's a line where I can't deal. This is over my personal line.

message 11: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A Oh, absolutely. I feel the same way. Way over the line for me too. From what I read in Verity's review I knew it wasn't something I would feel comfortable reading. Kudos to those who can get thru a book like that. Definitely not for me.

Just read Verity's review in more detail. Wow, this could go down as the most f'd up book ever! However, overall its rated as a book one either loves or hates, and I typically love a book that falls into that category. (Flowers in The Storm; Whitney, My Love...etc. I just loved.) I cringe at the idea of enjoying this one, but if the writing is good... Can't wait to hear what K though! Brave, brave girl.

message 13: by AgentScully (new)

AgentScully I read V's review today too. I threw up in my mouth a little, to quote another poster here.

Samantha I had this book in my "scared of" pile. You know the books that have been so controversial or you heard so much about and you don't know if you should even bother. And since I own the physical copy (got it used for real cheap) I'd hate to never read it. Let me know how it goes.

message 15: by Beanbag (last edited Jan 14, 2010 05:55PM) (new)

鈾arlyn P鈾 Melissa wrote: "I just read Verity's review. My poor mind needs scrubbed."

I know. there was a reply earlier that this is an 'abuse manual', and from what's posted in the reviews that may even be an understatement!

Daisiemae If you're not a fan of old school bodice rippers, this is not the book for you!
Good Luck with it:)

message 21: by K. (new) - rated it 3 stars

K. LMAO!!! At all of your comments gf's!! Too funny! Okay, so I'm only a few pages into it (page 21 - haven't had a bunch of time lately, but planning to get through a lot this weekend, as I have a three day weekend (again - I work for the government - LOL! :D). Not brave, just curious to form my own opinion (as usual), but trust me . . . I don't expect it to be "I love this book" or anything close! HAHA! Just had heard so much, figured I'd have Catheryne Robb (a regular poster at Amazon which most of you know!) send it my way. This is the very same book (as in "the ame physical book itself) that Verity read (Agent Scully -- I thought you had read it as well?!?) Anyway . . . I'm not "faint at heart" as most of you know, so I'll try to keep up with the comments to see if I think it's just as bad as everyone says it is! ;)

Danielle: Did you read this boook? and . . . did you read "THIS" book?

Samantha: You could always sell it!! LOL! ;D

KarLyn: I don't know . . . I think this one will make WML and FFTS seem "sweet" in comparison (I didn't think FFTS was abusive . . . just not romance to me). Since I've read both of those too (remember -- I LOVED WML the first time I read it, just didn't enjoy it the second time and not because of the hero's original issues in the original version (don't want to give anything away there). Mostly just thought the H/h came off as childish and parental in their relationship dynamic on the second read 15 years later. I don't really expect to like this one! LOL! To be honest, the ONLY person I've ever seen post who thought this was "great" was a poster by the name of "Nightwind" at Amazon, who used to post almost ONLY in defense of this book . . . she was a little . . . Um . . . high strung! LOL! ;D (I bet Holly remembers a convo with her on this book! Holly's read it BTW).

Daisiemae: I'm only a "fan" of a few old school bodice rippers (which I've read back in the "old school" LOL!) but I'm not really reading this one and expecting to like it. Just adding it to my "book knowledge base," so to speak. Stay tuned everyone! ;)

message 22: by AgentScully (new)

AgentScully Good luck K! I'll keep an eye out for your updates ;-)

No, I haven't read Stormfire or have any desire too. I know Holly has.

message 23: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Jan 15, 2010 04:16AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Danielle The Book Huntress Yes, I read it back in the day. I think it's well-written, which is why I gave it four stars. It's full of nastiness happening to characters, so not something I ever want to read again. It is the epitome of a bodice ripper, and it has to be interpreted in light of the fact that this was the writing style of the times (but I can certainly understand people not loving this book. I don't love it.)

Samantha Yeah but the reason I purchased it was because it was so controversial. Since I was so curious I figure I'd read it but it stayed in that pile. That was one of my resolutions this year to get in that pile. Ain't it great to have a 3 day weekend? I work for gov't too so I'm happy no work on Monday for me!

Danielle The Book Huntress Me, three. I am so jazzed that I actually have Monday off.

message 26: by Lynsey A (last edited Jan 15, 2010 06:27PM) (new)

Lynsey A Well, I have four days off but I took off today. I don't work for government but we have Monday off too. So nice.

Danielle The Book Huntress Normally I wouldn't have Monday off, but my duty station (that I'm going back to, praise God), doesn't want to pay overtime. So I get Monday off!!! (does happy dance)

Samantha Danielle: I'm doing the happy dance for you. I love when I get an extra day off. That means more time to read and not have to sneak during lunch and stuff.

Wow Lynsey! Four days. I actually thought about taking off today especially since I was out of the city on business. I was kind of tired today.

message 29: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A Yes, the four days is very nice...however, we're putting in a new bathroom this weekend so that is how I am spending my time. Can't wait until it is done!

Although, I did take a nap today so it was all good. :-)

message 30: by MelissaB (last edited Jan 15, 2010 08:19PM) (new)

MelissaB Good luck with the bathroom Lynsey! I just moved into a house so I know how much work it is! And we only painted ours. This weekend is painting the laundry room.

Enjoy the long weekend, I have no extra time off (no fair!).

message 31: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A Thanks, Melissa! My boyfriend has done most of the work but I helped a little today and it is tough! :-)

Enjoy your house! I loved it when I moved into my house. It was 3 years ago but it was still a great time. Now, I'm getting around to home improvements...since I now have a very handy boyfriend who enjoys doing these things. Lucky me! Ha ha.

Good luck with the painting! We will probably get to painting the bathroom tomorrow so I'll be breathin the fumes too. LOL

Samantha Lynsey...at least you can enjoy it after all the work you put in.

message 33: by MelissaB (new)

MelissaB Hubby edges the rooms while I roll - I feel like I inhale a lot of paint.

He is always doing stuff at night while I sit and read because I refuse to do work past 9pm.

message 34: by Lynsey A (new)

Lynsey A Too true, Samantha. That's what I am looking forward to the most. My old bathroom was so ugly and my new one is so much nicer...well, it will be when it's done.

Melissa - LOL. Good for you! I actually worked later than my boyfriend tonight. He didn't get a nap today like I did. :-) But, I did quit at 10:30.

message 35: by Bill (last edited Jan 24, 2010 08:16PM) (new)

Bill Oh, K, you got to this book before I did. I don't even know why or when I put it on my TBR list, but I think like you it was to see what the fuss is all about. My note for it says "Sean Culhane kidnaps Catherine Enderly and rapes, beats and abuses her to break her and comes to admire her courage. She falls in love with him." I think I was amazed anyone could get this story published. I read Whitney, My Love and Devil's Embrace just so I knew what they were and could comment on them. This is in that same catagory. I still haven't stumbled across a copy in my USB, but when I do I will put it in what Samantha calls her scared to read pile. LOL

I am enjoying your on-going commentary as you read it. Sounds like quite a bit happens in the first 50 pages or so. What ever possessed you to start this book now? Was it like a mountain - you started to read it because it was there?

Holly Normally I love old skull bodice rippers. The more deranged the hero the more I seem to heart them... but Stormfire was just waaaay beyond my comfort level. I despised the both of them.

Good luck, K!

message 37: by K. (new) - rated it 3 stars

K. Holly: [*Hey -- there she is!* :) ] That's true - you do tolerate a lot more "alpha" from a hero than I do on some of your reads . . . so it definitely says a LOT about Sean Culhane wearing ANY kind of "hero" label whatsoever, that even you couldn't tolerate him! ;\

I'm at the halfway mark now . . . and he truly is an a$$! He's gone from brutal in my mind (which he is) to just plain emotionally extreme in his thought processes to the point of psychosis! To be honest, the guy sounds so self-involved, he reviews everyone's actions that go on around him as revolving around HIM! Yuk! As for Catherine - she's 17 years old, and thinks and acts like it!
K.

Danielle: Well, as you see, we agree in the end on this book -- I also gave it extra stars for the exceptional writing. I can't help but *sigh* :( about that since this author is deceased, and I can't expect a couple of "loving, romantic protagonists" to come from her writing now. Have you . . . or has anyone read any of her other books, and if so, were they more romantic (and less over-the-top bodice-ripping drama and angst)? Just curious.

Ya Bill . . . and she acts entirely her age - mature perhaps at times for her age (or maybe I'm inadvertently confusing "maturity" with "young resiliency" for what the hero puts her through), mixed with LOTS of "young and dumb." You'll apparently find out as I'm sending the book to booklover on Monday.

I've read books like that before. With the Kindle I'm looking at percentages going "30%!? That's alllll!?"
