Elizabeth It's really good; tho extremely long. There's a condensed version (I've read both) that is good. And there's a bit of Slav casual cruelty that passes for humor. But by and large...worth the read.
On an unrelated topic, we're expecting ten inches of snow by tomorrow. Gah. Have to go search barn for snow shovel.

Thank you Elizabeth. Yes, I've heard it is very long... I did not know there is a condensed version. I am a purist but in this case I may cheat. Good luck with the snow.. Spring should be arriving soon.

Ray this is well worth a read - i bought it as a present to myself after finishing my A levels - 35 years ago now - and have read it several times since. The humour is sometimes crude in places, but also subtle and satirical. Hasek died before completing the book so it just peters out - could have been even longer!

BTW the bar that features in the first part of the book is now a tourist destination in Prague - U Kalicha

Kalliope Thank you, Ray. Will try to push it up in my pile.
