Cosas de libros.

All of us on ŷ love the “things of books. We love to be entertained by our faithful companions. They are with us in good times and bad. Kind of like man’s best friend, the dog.

Put them together, add in a sad love story (we have all had this at one time or another), and add in a lot of play on language and literature. For lovers of language and literature, this was a lot of fun. Really.

Let’s be clear, Niebla or mist was a “nivola, not a novel. Following in the footsteps of Cervantes, it is a work of fiction. It is not realism like Zola but rather the actions are the play of the author. Or is it whim? A fantasy? Well not with an anarchist as one of the characters. I might add that it was a generation or two ahead of magic realism. Very twentieth century. Whatever it is, Unamuno has created a truly classic of Spanish literature. Truly so.

It’s a love story. One day Augusto Perez falls in love with a young woman Eugenia. Does she spell her name with a “g or maybe an “j? It was her eyes that caught his heart. Hmm. Perhaps bewitched is better.

You see Eugenia has a boyfriend, but he has no job and she supports herself teaching the piano. Except she hates it. She lives with her uncle (the anarchist) and aunt. She is looking for a way out. Her father left a mess...oops, let’s not give too much away.

Augusto has money but has a thing going for young Rosario. A love triangle! Help! help! help! He needs his male friend Victor to help him out. Nothing like a good friend to give advice. Women and love are complicated issues. Or not.

Augusto is a way out for Eugenia. Sort of. You know how love triangles go. Badly. Enter our faithful writer, Don Unamuno.

Let’s really not go there. Yes, let’s do.

Remember that I spoke about man’s best friend? The dog is called Orfeo. So appropriate.* Orpheus (in English) goes down to bring his beloved Eurydice back from the underworld. He is told not to look back as she follows him back, but you know men, they just can’t resist, can they? And he loses her, again.

The dog Orfeo is our counsel. It can lead us back from the dead (pun intended). It know what is good for us, silly humans with those emotional issues. Yes such silly humans, such a wise old dog Señor Unamuno.

This is a six star category book.

A special thanks to my GR friends who have raved about this book and are wondering, “what took you so long? I sheepishly acknowledge my tardiness and apologize.

*A footnote on the names:

Augusto - the revered one. Perhaps overly optimistic in this case.
Eugenia - well born. Hmm. Perhaps not and a bit deceitful.
Víctor - used because he is anything but victorious.
Rosario - rosary, a religious item useful in prayer. She is a bit of a tart I would say.

Nelson Zagalo I've started this book once in Salamanca, but then had to come back home and didn't finished it. Have to go back to it. Thanks for the illustrative review.

David You were in Salamanca? Oh that is where Unamuno is from in the book. Very cool. I have to admit it actually starts out a little on the sappy side but once it gets going, things escalate!

Nelson Zagalo Salamanca is just 300 km from where I live, so not that outstanding :) I was there for a conference and then decided to look for Unamuno because of his relationship with the city and the University. This book is highly praised.

I felt that starting a bit weak, and thought that the praise of the book was coming more from his high profile than from his novelistic qualities :) But thanks to you, I'll now give it another opportunity :)

áܻ徱 Azevedo David, thank you for the review. It is really inspiring!

David thanks áܻ徱 for your kind words!

David Hi Nelson, I didn’t realize the distance is that close. For me, that is a big deal.

Trust me, a couple of times I was wondering about all the praise, but it does change. Unamuno does play on writers and readers. That is what made it for me. Hopefully you will have the same experience.

Alma Um dos melhores livros que li este ano.

David Me too. Thanks for stopping by, Alma.

Maricarmen Estrada M Beautiful review, David! Unamuno is indeed a classic author, but I haven’t read him yet. I’m really interested now. Thank you!

David Thank you for your kind words, Maricarmen. I can see why he is a classic!

Kalliope David, I am glad you enjoyed this. You are right in that Unamuno was finding his own literary genre, and in that he reminds me of Valle-Inclan with his "Esperpentos".

I liked the way you dug on the significance of the names, of people and of the dog.

David Thanks Kalliope for stopping by. I owe you a big thanks. And need to read some Valle-Inclan.

I like digging into the meanings of words. A little obsession of mine!

I have read very little of Unamuno and of Valle-Inclán... I am currently reading Luces de varietés. Lo grotesco en la España de Fellini y la Italia de Valle-Inclán, which offers an interesting look at some aspects of the gallegan writer.

David Wow that sounds good. Enjoy and looking forward to a review!

Guille Celebro muchísimo que te gustara, David. Me ha hecho gracia esos comentarios que has puesto en relación a los nombres de los protagonistas, seguro que diste en el clavo.

David Thanks Guille. Some books are so inspirational and this is one.

Jorge Me da gusto que te haya gustado tanto, yo también lo disfruté mucho, aunque tendré que darle otra leída. Tu sentido de la apreciación y e interpretación y luego plasmar tus impresiones, es genial

David Muchas gracias, Jorge. Such kind words. Such an enjoyable book!
