Suneha's Reviews > The Selection
The Selection (The Selection, #1)
by
Uggghhhhh! What a waste of my time.
I'm very disappointed in this book. The blurb was interesting, most of the reviews were good, the cover was gorgeous and I was instantly drawn towards this book but The Selection had a lot of issues and major plot holes. I find it ludicrous that this book is a bestseller and I feel that it is highly overrated.
What annoyed me the most about this book:
1.The Ridiculous names.
Oh my god. Stating that the names used in the book were ridiculous would be a HUGE understatement. Let me list some of them -
America, Maxon, Aspen, Kriss, Marlee, Bariel, Tiny, Gavril, Kamber, and Sosie.
I can pay no heed to some of the names but TINY? Who name's their daughter TINY? Is that even a name? I had a HUGE WTF moment when I first came across this name in the book. I thought there was something wrong with the printing or that I had read it wrong but no, it was just the terrible naming of the character.
2.The Horrible World Building.
Cass tried to bring depth and mystery to the story. God knows she tried, but she failed miserably.
The story is set in a country called Illea and the Palace is constantly attacked by rebels. Why?
There was also a random history lesson thrown in which was absolutely ridiculous! Apparently, there was a third and fourth world war and US was invaded by China and Russia. Yeah, Right
It also mentioned something like "American State of China" which seriously cracked me up. Not only is the world building unconvincing, it is also unbelievably stupid and ridiculous.
2.Exaggerations
America Singer, the main character complains and whines about everything. She claims that she is utterly and completely poor because she can't have second helpings at dinner and because doesn't have enough makeup. WTF???? Not having makeup does NOT make a person poor!
Let me list everything she has.
She has her own room with a fairly comfortable bed, she eats 3 square meals a day, her house has a fridge and a Television and she also eats pop-corn while watching TV. What else does this shallow bitch need? Just because her caste is low doesn't mean she's poor.
The worst part is that she keeps on complaining about poor she is throughout the book when its pretty obvious to us that she is exaggerating. Is she trying to convince us or herself?
3.The Annoying Main Characters
Don't even get me started on Prince Maxon. He is too perfect and too polite to be real. Not only that, he is also awkward, weird and dumb. He is terribly boring, predictable and completely witless! Did I mention awkward?
He practically bored me to death! He has no depth at all! He is so cliche and Disney Princish. The way he called everyone "dear" was downright creepy! Who addresses a stranger by calling them "dear"?
America is the most annoying and the whiniest female lead I have EVER read about. She whines about everything! She whines about being poor; yeah right, having less makeup; boohoo!, everyone calling her pretty; Whats her problem with that?!
She reeks of fake modesty which makes her look like she's always fishing for compliments.
Aspen and Marlee were probably the only people I actually liked in this book but that was overshadowed by Aspen's gigantic ego and Marlee's boring-ness.
So basically, I did not like any of the character in this book.
4.The Book lacks depth.
This book is inconsistent and witless. There is no depth in the author's writing, no depth in her characters and no depth in the plot.
There was nothing going on in the book. Not even the female drama I was expecting. That is, if you count tearing someone's dress or slapping someone in front of a crowded room as "Drama".
I also don't get why everyone is comparing it with The Hunger Games. I'm not a huge fan of The Hunger Games but I have to admit that The Hunger Games and The Selection are nothing alike. They are worlds and Genres apart!
Oh, and about the genre. In what universe is this book dystopian?! The dystopian part of the book is unexplored and horribly built to market it in that genre.
I thought this book would be a promising series but, God was I wrong!
If this is the type of book I'm going to get when I search for dystopia/post-apocalyptic books then my faith in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ recommendations has been lost forever.
