How can more than half of my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friends be wrong with this?

I have to get this right. As of this writing, I have 98 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friends. 61 (62%) of them have read J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Out of those who read this, 39 (64%) rated this with 5 stars. 11 of them with 4 stars. All the others gave 3 or 2. Only 2 rated this with 1 star. One of them admitted not being able to finish it. She should not have rated it really since she did not read its entirety. (But she is my friend and it is her right, so why question?)

When the book came out in 1998, I was not yet a bookworm so I brushed this aside. I read only those books that my brother told me to read. He was the bookworm but he would not be caught reading any book being pushed by media hype. However, when Warner Bros. released the film adaptation in 2001, my daughter was 6 years old and I thought that, since there was too much hype, the movie must be good and we would have a memorable time with our first ever father-daughter movie date. I was wrong. She not only got scared because of the darkness inside the movie house but she trembled with fear during the life-size human chess game, in that scene when Ron was sacrificed. We left the movie in that scene with my daughter crying and me cursing it: I will never read Harry Potter .

My daughter is now 15 going 16. She is not fond of movies and she still does not show interest on reading Harry Potter. However, I am now a bookworm and the other week, I was with my 4 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friends and 3 of them raved (two of them, again) about Harry Potter books. Oh well, first-time fathers can make mistakes about first movie date with their daughters, Book 1 is included in 500 Must Read Books and the book must be a quick read. So the following day, I bought my copy.

After 13 years of the book's existence and me ignoring it, did I finally make a good decision of reading it? Are all of those 39 friends of mine in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ wrong in giving this 5 stars? Most of them did not bother writing a review. Maybe those would be too long or maybe they read this when they were not in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ yet. But I am in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ already so I can make this review long.

These are what some of them say:
it was a great book
i enjoyed reading it
For an eloquent reviewer, she must have been too happy to express herself.
Such a great story and creative way of writing. I love Harry Potter.
Yes, I agree about the story being great and J. K. Rowling being creative.
I was secretly wishing I was studying in Hogwarts too! It was silly, but I was simply enraptured by Harry Potter. Honestly, I still am :) It was a great book. I enjoyed reading it
Coming from one of my favorite reviewers in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I do not share her wanting to be a sorcerer though.
Honestly, I don't know anybody who'd refuse to even entertain the thought of attending a school for wizards.
Another one of my favorite reviewers. That seems to have nailed this. Young people wanting to be in Hogwarts and study sorcery. That should be it! The world seems to be a dreadful place that we would all like to have powers to turn our enemies into frogs, pigs, ride on a broomstick and get the Snitch and earn points (money) for our family!

Oh well, the Bible says that sorcery is Satan's work. The book even used the word Transfiguration as a subject in the sorcery school. Blasphemy.

Just kidding. This is a work of fiction and I am not too old to appreciate it. I was just kidding. To be frank, I tried hard not to like this. I thought that giving this a 1 or 2 will freak out my friends and somehow get votes from those who are, up to now, ignoring this book. I told you so! Why waste your time? . However, unless you are a grumpy old man/woman, there is nothing not to like about this book. I maybe too old for it but hey, talent is talent and J. K. Rowling has it!

My 39 friends are indeed right!

Melissa I loved this book. Can't wait to hear what you think about it.

K.D. Absolutely I will be absolutely honest, Melissa. Hope that we will stay as friends ha ha!

Diane ÏŸ [ Lestrange ] oh! you start reading HP. hope youll like it as much as i did. happy reading! :)

K.D. Absolutely Yes, I will try to beat the showing of HP7 Part 1 this month. Thanks, Diane!

Diane ÏŸ [ Lestrange ] haha same page here! gud luck with both of us. haha

Joyzi This series will get better and better, I grew up reading this book and every year I'm looking forward for the next one. Enjoy reading that!

K.D. Absolutely I will Joyzi. I will also remember the young you while I read from one book to another. How old were you when you read Book 1?

Joyzi I really can't remember it was eons ago and that's why my book review on that was really walang kwenta, I just say I really enjoyed the book blah blah

K.D. Absolutely Shame on me. I am an old man now and still to read the book. I hope my review will be may kuwenta (there is computation ha ha) so I will not be double ashamed at least to you.

I understand. I read Twilight before joining Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. So, I just wrote something on my reviews for those 4 books. Had I read them just this year, the reviews for each would be kilometric considering the I liked them ha ha!

Joyzi haha sige now I'm curious to read your review on Twilight

Regine I was 11 when I first the read Harry book, and I finished the 7th book when I was 17 or 18. Rowling was really smart about the books because the characters and her own style of writing mature with her target audience.

Having said that, my older siblings ( the oldest one is 17 years older than I am) also enjoyed reading the books after I was done with them.

message 12: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely Walang Kwenta (no computation ha ha).

Kasi when I added those books as read, I was adding so many books that I tried to remember so I would have a record of all the books I read since I learned how to read. So, I could not remember the stories in those books anymore. Of course Twilight was an easy one but I normally write how I felt about the book and not like how a detailed professional book reviewer would do it. Then of course, the movie was shown already and since its centered on feeling, I tend to remember the images in the movie while writing those reviews so I just made them short. In short, wala talagang kwenta (really no computation) ha ha

K.D. Absolutely Thanks for telling me Regine. I feel pressured now. Before leaving home this morning, I was thinking which book to put in my gym bag: Harry Potter or The Red Tent. I sometimes have time to read while resting before leaving the gym.

The Red Tent won. It should have been Harry Potter. However, I am not sure people will not frown on me reading there. An old man reading HP. Late by eons (as Joyzi puts it) of time. When I bought may copy last Saturday the salesclerk said: "ngayon lang babasahin ng anak nyo, sir?". Buti di nya sinabing apo ha ha

Joyzi apo hahahahahha

message 15: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely It's really funny, Joyzi. I should have hid my face in shame. Well, maybe I will just ask my daughter to buy the other books ha ha.

Joyzi Haha tama tama parang ako lang yan nung bumili ako ng Lost Hero parang lumaki yung mata nung sales lady 19 years old na ko nabili pa ko ng children's books

message 17: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely 19 is still okay. Just pretend that you have underdeveloped mental capability. Bring lollipop and lick it in front of the salesclerk.

46 is already too much. I cannot wear adults diaper and pretend that I have Alzheimers!

Joyzi lol I can't really imagine myself like that I probably look retarded

message 19: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely That's the point! That's why you are buying a children's book! ha ha

Melissa Well, I was already a grown woman when I started reading this series. I'm not ashamed to admit there were a few times that I stood on line in front of a bookstore at midnight to get the books when they were released. Looking forward to the new movie but very sad that there is only one more movie left!

message 22: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely Yes, I feel sad to.

Of course, there is the Twilight final movie split into two also.

message 23: by Joyzi (last edited Nov 07, 2010 09:11PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Joyzi I'm not really looking forward for Breaking Dawn, I might punch someone in the face(maybe the one sitting beside me inside the cinema) because I was really annoyed by the book

message 24: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely Why? It is supposed to be where the climax is.

Joyzi Hello pedophilia??? and Breaking Dawn was the worst anticlimactic ending I've ever read in my entire life

message 26: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely Onga noh? Ha ha. You have a point! Why I did not take note of that? I got fixated on the fight scene!

Joyzi What fight scene are you talking about? Did I miss reading that part of the book? It was like a bunch of talking and drama

message 28: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely My dear, did you like Bella's shield?

KaiPea Ooh. Will be waiting your review about HP. My parents bought me this book as a pasalubong loooong ago because it is all popular and everyone is talking about it.
I can't say I liked it. I didn't even past the first chapter. I can't seem to enjoy the movie as well.

:P Maybe you can give some push to reread it.

message 30: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely I am not sure about that too, Kaipea. I am just on page 10 and to be honest, I am a bit bored. I think both of us need that push at this point.

Problem at this point: I know who that "you know who". I saw him in the movie ha ha. No more excitement there! Hay, KaiPea. Why did we not pick and read this 10 years ago?

Joyzi I don't like Bella's shield I think that really made the book anticlimactic having a superpower not meant an offense but more of a defense

Joyzi @kaipea that was my brother's problem too, he loves the movie but he can't get to read the book because he complains about the first chapters being boring

message 33: by K.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely Joyzi, Bella does not want to fight. She only wants to be loved. She was not born as a fighter but a lover ha ha.

Joyzi lol now you're being cheesy epekto ba yan ni Stephenie Meyer?

message 35: by K.D. (last edited Nov 07, 2010 10:08PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

K.D. Absolutely I don't know, Joyzi. When I read Twilight, there was no movie yet. Also, I was not into heavy reading yet so I had no point of comparison. I mean I have not yet read Elizabeth-Darcy love story so I thought that Bella-Edward's is just perfect and has given a new definition to a forbidden unusual love story similar to Beauty and the Beast ha ha. But that's me. I mean many readers got turned off by the movie. But I would like to think that readers liked the book and even myself, I don't think that Edward the actor approximated the guy described in the book. I thought he should be a lot better looking that that hum actor!

KaiPea @KD: I was busy reading Dragonlance and Knights of the silver dragon. x) I guess I got accustomed to LOTR (although I haven't read LOTR I've only watched the movies to me BTW is AWESOME!) kind of adventure books...
that made HP quite boring.

@Joyzi: The only thing that I liked about HP is the effects very very very cool but even that won't make me watch it.

Joyzi I read Twilight because of all the hype, I first saw the movie and already 2 of my friends are raving about the books and mind you they're not really into reading books but Twilight got them reading so I was curious to read about it to know what all the fuss was all about. The first and the second book I didn't enjoy that much because I'm struggling with Meyer's purple prose, I think Eclipse change that and that was when I respect SM and I know that she can write decently but Breaking Dawn it was just so bad if I had the book I might have burned it.

I read all the books via e-book btw so I'm not really that angry, I thought the Twilight saga was literally what you call a literature junkfood

Regine I think that only the first two HP movies measure up to the books. The rest of them were good, but did not stand up to the book.

KD, I reread the HP books once in awhile to "cleanse my palate". I remember reading the first one, and thinking, "wow, this is quite boring". By the second or third chapter, I started remembering why I loved the books so much.

Joyzi I love the 3rd movie, the movie that I think was the worst was the Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince

Regine I hated the Half Blood Prince

Joyzi me too the movie destroy the book Grrrr

Regine I loved the book. Loved, loved, loved the book. I can't even compare the movie to the book, because they turn the plot into a teen-romance. They missed major points in the movie-- such as Voldemort's family history, and there was no sense of fear when I was watching the movie.

Joyzi Yeah I love Snape why? I think he's cooler than Harry's father which I think is a douche bag

Joyzi yeah me too one of my favorite, but I think Hermione Granger was the best character among the rest and then I also love Luna Lovegood and Bellatrix and Sirius Black and Lupin and Dumbledore and Harry and Ron and the Twins Fred and George and Neville and Draco Malfoy, okay I shut up now

Joyzi Yeeep I cried when I've read The Prince's tale

Regine Severus is my favourite character too! I have coworkers that dislike Snape, and I just think , "what? are we even reading the same book here?"

Regine I think that my favourite characters are :

1) Snape
2)Harry
3)Lupin
4)Dumbledore
5) Ron and Hermione, and Hagrid, and Neville... haha, same problem that Joyzi ran into.

Regine I was a Snape fan from the get-go. I mean Harry's great, but he's a little to angsty for me sometimes.

Oh, and the Harry Potter exhibit was actually in Toronto a few months ago, and I got sorted into Gryffindor! Haha.

Joyzi I got sorted into Slytherin! *kidding*

Regine I always thought that even though he started out as a minor character, that he had more dimension than a most of the main characters. To see his character play the role that he did was so rewarding for me because I was egging him on from the start.
