Wow, what a great story! Mattie Ross is just 14 years old when she hooks up with Rooster Cogburn, the “meanest U.S. Marshal, to avenge her father, killed by an outlaw who took advantage of his good nature.

Mattie endures bad weather, illness, grueling hours on horseback, runs into outlaws, and fights off rattlesnakes. She’s tough-talking, honest, loyal, fearless, and I enjoyed every moment with her. I also loved the realistic historical details and well-drawn secondary characters. The gruff and unkempt Rooster Cogburn was a perfect match for the stubborn and willful teenager.

Mattie’s thoughts and exchanges with Rooster were hilarious.

“Nature tells us to rest after meals and people who are too busy to heed that inner voice are often dead at the age of fifty years."

“I had hated these ponies for the part they played in my father’s death but now I realized the notion was fanciful, that it was wrong to charge blame to these pretty beasts who knew neither good nor evil but only innocence. I say that of these ponies. I have known some horses and a good many more pigs who I believe harbored evil intent in their hearts. I will go further and say all cats are wicked, though often useful. Who has not seen Satan in their sly faces?

The story is told by Mattie 50 years later. She is wealthy, unmarried, churchgoing, and as spirited as she was when she was a teen.

Though I’ve never been a fan of John Wayne films, I really enjoyed this . The , directed by the Coen brothers and starring Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, is also well worth watching.

Evan Oh, I'm so proud to have such influence. Enjoy!

Nancy I want to feel like a kid again. :)

Evan I hope it works!

Evan Ah, so you like?

Nancy Oh, what fun! I haven't read a western since I was a child.

Evan If the book wasn't as funny as it was I don't think I would have cared much, as I'm not a huge westerns fan. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Nancy There were lots of little gems that made me laugh out loud. I'm not a big western fan either, nor am I a fan of John Wayne movies, but I'm curious about the movie now.

Evan I haven't seen the movie in a long time but I think it does credit to the book, from what I remember. That was an advantage because I could re-imagine the story anew from Portis' descriptions instead of latching onto images from the film. I generally like John Wayne films and have no trouble disassociating Wayne the actor from Wayne the right-winger. Wayne is probably the biggest star (here for the Ky Derby in '75), along with Bob Hope (here for a golf event in '80s), that I ever saw in real life, up close and personal. Of course, I also shook Bill Clinton's hand, so that was big.

Tara Chevrestt This has gotten my attenion. I want to read it! You should take a look see at: Bandit Queen and if you haven't already, Etta: A Novel.

Jim thanx for the recommendation!

Sandi I didn't even know this was a book, much less one told by the girl. I can't stand John Wayne movies and "True Grit" is no exception. You're not missing anything by missing the movie. I think John Wayne got an Oscar for his performance, but he walked through it being John Wayne just like he did in every movie.

message 12: by Matt (new)

Matt "Now I will have to watch it to see if the film is as good as the book."

With one exception, it is. The one exception is that it wasn't filmed on location. Had they done so, Mr. Wayne might have met the real deal - my grandfather Ben Graff.

Tara Chevrestt I don't care for John Wayne movies either but I LOVE a good western with a strong heroine. I went to the library today and actually have it reserved for next week. What a great review.

Sandi, love your Oscar comment! That's cute and so true.

Kemper I'm pretty sure I read this before, many years ago. In fact, I think I've got a copy with this exact cover packed away somewhere. I'm going to have to see if I can find it.

message 15: by Brad (new)

Brad For all those not impressed by John Wayne, this movie is being remade as I type with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn. I think that could be pretty cool.

Nancy I should be getting the original version from Netflix any day now. Jeff Bridges? That could work, but I wonder if he's just a little young for the role.

Nancy I finally got to watch the film and liked how it didn't feel really dated. The dialogue, music and scenes were great and I felt it was faithful to the book.

Jim Now you should watch "Rooster Cogburn" because the Duke & Katherine Hepburn are an absolutely wonderful pair together. She plays off his character just so well that she dazzled me.

Nancy I will check it out. Thanks, Jim. :)

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Lingrell I loved the updated 2010 version directed by Joel Coen. Wish I read the book first...

Nancy I need to update this review. I've now seen the original film and the 2010 version.

message 22: by Mel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mel I have not seen the John Wayne movie but I did see the newer version and I loved it. I also loved the book.

Nancy The original film is really good too. In some ways, I liked it better than the remake.

message 24: by Mel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mel Hmmmm.I was told to avoid the John Wayne version by my father in law but maybe I should check it out. I must confess I am not a huge fan of the Duke but after what you said it might be worth checking out.

message 25: by Bill (new)

Bill Wow! I'd never have thought to read this book. I'm not a big John Wayne fan either, didn't like the movie True Grit, but loved Rooster Cogburn likely because Katherine Hepburn played Eula Goodnight. Kate is, I think, my all-time favorite actress.

message 26: by Nicci (new)

Nicci While I have no plans on reading the book, I loved the movie. John Wayne is someone I had issues with but the cowboy thing, he was the ultimate macho man. LOL. Blame this warm fuzzy feelings on my father who still loves Wayne and all cowboy movies made under the sky. :-)

message 27: by Nicci (new)

Nicci Just noted, Nancy, this is an old review. It came up in a recent email and caught my interest. Hence, the comment.

Nancy I haven't updated my review since I've seen the movies. In many ways I preferred the original, but I also really enjoyed the remake with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn.

message 29: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Thanks Nancy for a terrific review. I loved the original movie-now I want to read the book.
