it was amazing

Received as an ARC from the publisher. Started 5-8-14. Finished 5-11-14. First let me explain what happened to me while reading this book aloud to my wife as she was preparing dinner. I'm 70; she's almost 70. I'd read the first page, laughed out loud and decided she'd like to hear it read. I read, we laughed and nodded knowingly, then I got to the end of chapter 4 and completely lost it---I couldn't continue through those last few sentences. My wife said I should quit since she knows that I cry at supermarket openings! Now how many books have you read that can cause that kind of a physical and emotional response?! On the other hand, this book is hilarious, insightful, touching and just plain awesome. It seems pretty simple at first but there is more depth to this book than any I've read in forever. As I got near the end, I thought that there really should be a sequel, then the plot changed-----definitely no sequel. But I'm thankful I had the opportunity to read this. You will too.

Tricia Your review is as sweet and funny as the book. :)

David V. Thanks. The book is a grabber!

Fran I wanted a sequel too!

David V. Yep, some times a sequel is necessary, some times it's just wishful thinking.

Doreen Klein absolutely love your review - Read this after hearing how much my Dad loved it

Emily Hey mister, you should have a spoiler alert about your post because of the sequel comment.

Carol Great review! I loved it too...nice you and your wife could enjoy it together! :-)

Susan Dames I giggled with happiness reading your review! Love that you read it to your wife! That's just darling!

David V. Trust me, reading through choke-ups is not easy!

Jinan H I was smiling like crazy while reading your review!

David V. Probably the best book I've read in many years.

Overbooked ✎ Great review David!

David V. Thanks, glad you liked it.

Margaret C. Argo loved this book. Cried at the end. one of the best stories I have read in a long time

David V. One of my best, too.

Amatos David, your review was inspiring. I am downloading the book right now. Thank you for reviewing it.

David V. You're welcome. Be prepared to show some emotion.

Brett Reimer David,
Great review. I just finished this one, and I know exactly how you felt while reading it. This has been one of my favorite books ever read, and it's nice to see many others feel the same.

David V. I'm wondering if younger people who've read the book had similar reactions to mine?

Diane Barnes David, there is a sequel of sorts. "The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessey" was written simultaneously by the author and released in March. It's the story of Queenie in the hospice as Harold is walking toward her. Every bit as wonderful as this one.

Susan Dames Thanks for sharing Diane! I am adding that to my list!

Brett Reimer Hi Diane. This is actually a sequel to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, not A Man called Ove. I already have Harold Fry in my 'To Read' list, so I did add this one as well! Thank you :)

Heulwen Sweet When I bought this, I was like, why am I reading about a bitter old man and by the end I was laughing, crying and was desperate for it not to finish too. I had to stop reading it in public just for that reason.

Sheba This is an awesome review. I think reading this book at different stages of your life will bring something up. For younger people its a bit scary, for older people like Ove, you recognize elements. Sweet to read this review. Live long and happy !

Aurora Shele Just started reading this book because of your review. :) I loved both my grandpa and dad, both dead now and I wanted to read something about a man that would remind me of them. I read the first line of the book and this man Ove is 59 just the age my dad had when he passed away and I was.. Oh I must read this book now. I come back to reading your review because it fills me up with such tenderness. :) Thank you.

David V. Hi Aurora, You'll love this book. Probably the best book I've read in the last 10 years. No matter what age the reader is, you'll get something profound from the reading.

message 27: by Susy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Susy I too loved this book & after writing a short review I decided to read what others thought. I so loved this review & had to remind myself of chapter 4. Yeah, I couldn't have read those sentences aloud either.

David V. I work at Barnes & Noble (music Dept.) and I've recommended this book many times to customers. They often come back to tell me how much they liked it, so I guess it's universal.

Kaitlin I read this to my husband as well. something we could both very much enjoy.

message 30: by Susan (new)

Susan Mahler-hughes I cannot believe that you gave the ending away. Why would you do that???

David V. Well, you know I wrote those comments about 2 years ago, and I've had about 170 likes since then, so I guess it didn't bother most people.

Trisha Smith Great review!! I loved that you read it to your wife :) Can't wait to read this one!!

Cynthia David, enough material for book club questions and discussion? Your review was lovely!

message 34: by Jane (new)

Jane Loved your review. I felt the same and would love any other recommendation from you.

Susan Zawyrucha An unforgettably beautiful story

message 36: by Ayla (new)

Ayla Sandoval Thank you David for your review. You have convinced me to read it. Thank you. I was deciding between two books and now you've made my choice easier. Good review!

message 37: by June (new) - rated it 4 stars

June loved your review! I lost my husband when he was 76. thank you for sharing.

Bridgette Elston I don't know about a sequel (hard to improve on such and awesome story) but another point of view would be interesting. I for one would love to read one from Pirvanna (sp?) point of view. I have a feeling she knew how many times she prevented Ove from finishing what he started...

David V. Bridgette wrote: "I don't know about a sequel (hard to improve on such and awesome story) but another point of view would be interesting. I for one would love to read one from Pirvanna (sp?) point of view. I have a ..."

Excellent idea. I hadn't thought about a differing view.

Mary Ellen David V. We're not connected in any way. I actually stumbled upon this book. Then clicked on a random review. And then read your review...which seemed ions ago given the way people read through books on here...and perhaps one day I'll have the time to do so. Yet being a Mother with primary aged children I do think I may regret wishing for a time to complete a book in 3-5 days like these avid readers I admire on here.

I just wanted to reach out...and do not know if you'll ever receive this or if these comments are actual people, that...

What struck me most about your review was not your comments about the book itself. I never got that far...although scrolling down to write this comment evidently you eluded to the ending of the book?;)... I giggle quietly when life presents bigger fish to fry and others have the beauty of being concerned with those kinds of issues...:). Sooooo...

If you ever do read this...I just wanted to share what struck me most about your review/comment. To be honest, I stopped after a couple of lines bc what you wrote was so profound that I found myself hoping you and your wife are still alive and vibrant; that this was a review from an authentic person who holds the compassion and empathy I strive to influence my children with, and that, if I wrote what I'm writing at this moment...where the f&cking does my comment end up and who the f&cking would ever read it....SOOOO...

I'm going to get to my point as it's as if I'm journaling at this point :)

What struck me most was that you began so naturally describing you were reading aloud to your wife. What then unfolded was your desire to share with her the humor you were experiencing at that time, from simply several pages of a book.

This was so profound to me, given you're both in your 70's, the desire to want to see the one you love the most be able to share the same experience you were having...I believe is the secret success to marriage. It encompasses compassion, empathy and the desire to want to make your partner feel good. As simply complex as I could express given I have written so much to get to my point:). Many blessings and happy reading.

Hold onto what you've been doing because you're both doing what it takes to beat the odds of the divorce rate of 52% of couples in the US.

The Passionate Marriage is one of my recommended books. And although it's a fabulous book, the authenticity of your comment is enough to model what it takes to succeed in interpersonal commitments:)

Mary Ellen Please excuse my grammatical errors as I didn't have time to go back to edit. And these little boxes are tricky enough to do so

David V. Hi Mary, Thank you for your comment. Yes, there are real people behind these reviews, and we get e-mail notices when someone adds a comment to our reviews. Join in, it's fun, even if you only read a few books a year. I've always read a lot, so now I'm reading the 40th book for this year. My wife and I will have been married 50 years on November 24 this year. It was actually Thanksgiving Day 50 years ago. We've always shared funny, interesting, etc items from books, tv, or whatever. It helps of course to have a similar sense of humor,or just plain curiosity about the world. Other than the usual ailments and aches, we're doing ok. My mother is 94(!) and is just now in the process of moving to an assisted living set-up. She says, "getting old isn't for wimps!' Thanks again, and I hope you enjoyed Ove as much as I did.

Carole Hazell Love your review. Exactly what I thought. Thank you : )

Becky I can't do anything till I finish this book! Just checking to see if I am crazy or if anyone else liked it as much. On the brief breaks I take from the book all I can think about is all my friends that I think should read this book too.

David V. I may have been one of the first to make a comment about this book in May, 2014. Tonight my wife and I saw the movie based on this book at a small local art house theater. What a joy. Brilliant acting, although I pictured Ove looking older. In Swedish with English subtitles. The book had more funny lines but this had plenty. By the end (and several times during the movie) there wasn't a dry eye in the house. If you liked the book, you'll love the movie

Jeannette Just began the book I like it so far and will post when I'm done. It's an odd book me me to read but well see what happens !

Kitty Kolektor Well crap. My mom told me it wouldn't make me cry, but after seeing your review I'll likely be a leaky faucet while reading it. Both Britt Marie was Here and My Grandmother Told Me To Day She's Sorry made me bawl like a toddler who dropped her ice cream.

Heather Mary ... Very well said

David V. On the other hand, it will also make you laugh out loud.

Angela David, loved your review! I read this for book club and it made me laugh and made me cry. Ove is the curmudgeon you learn to love!
