Slightly disappointed with the next-Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I took on this classic next IN ONE SITTING.
&...
WOW!

Where has this one been all my life? I adore "Candide" because it is rife with adventure, it is a speedy read, and at the very end you experience a vortex of feelings and NOVEL concepts. It transcends literature itself.

Compare this to Dante. To Shakespeare! I could not help but smile at all the awful misadventures of our poor fool. This is made for someone, like me, who thinks "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho isn't all that...!

I even told G that I was put off by the cover--that is, not until the entire book is ravished & torn apart by the ravenous reader does the simple, almost academic print of a globe in this particular edition of "Candide" make sense.

So...
voila! Voltaire.

Liana Two words. Speech. Less.

Roberta Where has this been all your life? Probably in the mental file of stories you assume you know from hearing or reading so many references to certain phrases repeated frequently in the book, and a few songs from the Leonard Bernstein musical. I'd skimmed through this often, to check on certain references, but like you, when I read the whole book a few years ago, I was amazed by its brilliance.

Fabian Yeah. And why is it not as big a deal here as in Europe?

Vivian It is a delightfully scathing commentary.

Maria I'm going to read this soon! I have it in my shelf, and are reading so many good things about it. Sounds like a fun, meaningful and easy to read classic.

Greg Hi Fabian, I'm halfway through this one. I read the first half at a restaurant and I didn't realize, until turning the pages, that the illustrations were rather sexual, shall we say even candid?

Lynne King Fabian, Candide is an excellent book. One of my favourites.

Paul Falk Nice hearing from you. Great review Fabian!

Leonard Gaya I guess it's no wonder that in this best of all possible worlds there is one best of all possible books and one best of all possible reviews...

message 19: by Juxhin (new)

Juxhin Deliu Voltaire not holding back against then dominant and bastardized theory of Leibniz and not only... every chapter and charachter is a jab

Lorraine Stunning review!

Jason Williams This book used to be confiscated from immigrants entering the US. Technically it was because it was considered "obscene" and was thus in violation of the Comstock Laws. But I am also inclined to believe that American leaders were and are intolerant of anything the potentially mocks happiness and the pursuit thereof.

sunflowerbooknook What a fun read sometimes it felt like the adventures of Don Quixote , loved the banter of philosophy between Candide and his traveling compatriots... good read

Cliff M Brilliant review. Thank you. And yes鈥. all that fuss about The Alchemist seems embarrassing now. It reminds me of when claiming you had read 鈥楢tlas Shrugged鈥 was de-rigeur among managers and execs. I think Clinton started the fashion for pretending to like The Alchemist, but the person responsible for Atlas fever is lost in my foggy memory鈥

The Funky Cat are you ... me? also recently been let down by marquez and have always been preaching that the alchemist isn't all that at all. adding this to my tbr
