did not like it
bookshelves: sci-fi, fantasy, 1-star-reads

Here's seven reasons why this trilogy sucks:

1. Katniss has the personality of a vegetable

description

description

description

2. Peeta is a needy little baker boy

description

I’ll never get over how the author can justify his camouflage techniques born as a result from his cake decorating experience…

description

3. The world is completely unacceptable and unbelievable.

No collective nation would be so morally depraved as to watch the murder of children for entertainment; I cannot accept this idea.

description

description

4. This book did not make me think, as everything is on the surface.

There is nothing beyond the story; it is basic and thrown in your face.

description

5. The writing is atrocious.

description

6. Collins self-plagiarises herself in the second book.

Peeta: We must survive these games.

Katniss: Hang on a minute. Didn’t we do this exact same thing before?

Peeta: It doesn’t matter. The readers will love it.

Katniss: Ok. I forgot. I’m so stupid. I can only think in simple sentences. We must win. I like to shoot arrows.

Peeta: Yes. We must live. I shall use my cake decorating skill to our advantage!

Katniss:Ok.

7. The whole series is a combination of cheap thrills in which the last book is a complete mess.

description

I hate this series so much; I will never understand its popularity. It is just terrible on every level. I’ve included links to my reviews of the first two books, as they explain my summary here. I honestly couldn’t be bothered to write a full review of this; it didn’t deserve it. It was such a mess.

The Hunger Games
1. The Hunger Games- A transparent one star
2. Catching Fire- A cheap one star
3. Mockingjay- A terrible one star

Thomas Stroemquist Hi Sean, this is most interesting I think. I'm certainly not a stranger to that people feel very differently about books and I've certainly disliked or felt indifferent to ones that seemingly "everyone else" (or at least most) have praised. These are a bit unique though in that they are huge bestsellers as well as being praised (or at least liked) by a large number of people I know, while you positively hate them! :-0

I have been meaning to read these, and am encouraged to do so by your reviews - which of course is not surprising, good reviews (positive or negative) often do just that.

Carmen Accurate.

Cheyenne Kai It's a relief that I'm not the only one to think this about these books.

They were a struggle for me, they really were. I had to grit my teeth far too much when reading.

I hope you have a more pleasant experience, though in all honesty I don't know why these are popular. I just can't see it objectively.

I know ;)

SamuraiKitty Hi Sean - So tell us how you REALLY feel about these books! LOL Great reveiw(s)!

Rikke Simonsen " I will never understand its popularity. It is just terrible on every level. " - Fair enough, that's YOUR point. But please accept that others might have a different reading experience of the series than you - and that's the wonder of reading right? :)

Craig "NEEDS MORE DAMN TIME TO READ !!!!" I came to this series from Battle Royale so yeh....while mu ratings for the books where more forgiving than yours I did think this series as a whole was a huge missed opportunity!

message 13: by Tiger (new)

Tiger Gray what about this review suggests that the reviewer doesn't accept other people's enjoyment of this series?

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa but why'd you bother with book 3 if you hated the 1st one so much?

Sean Barrs Lisa wrote: "but why'd you bother with book 3 if you hated the 1st one so much?"

to see if it got better. It's easy reading anyway. the sort of book you can finish in a day.

Sean Barrs Tiger wrote: "what about this review suggests that the reviewer doesn't accept other people's enjoyment of this series?"

I don't know to be honest. I think I stuck a nerve with my negative review. ;)

message 17: by Marita (new)

Marita Hansen I gave up pretty quick on the first book, but loved Battle Royale, which has a similar concept, just was better written.

message 18: by Carly (new)

Carly Finally, I have found someone who shares my hatred for this series!

message 19: by Peter (last edited Oct 13, 2015 06:15AM) (new)

Peter Couldn't agree more, my daughter tried to get me to read this and all that I kept thinking was WHY. Oh, your comment is not fair on vegetables. Norman my pet Cauliflower was very upset!

message 20: by Nickols (new) - added it

Nickols seriously go to hell. HATER

Giedre haha I love Hunger Games but I totally see where you are coming from. Your review made me laugh. well done.

message 22: by Peter (new)

Peter I've got it! The Great British Bake Off went global and the world went crazy, so a new edition was created and in every team is a baker and they must bake their way to freedom. Que hummngbird mockingjay theme.

message 23: by Matt (new)

Matt This review is one of the best things I've ever read. Uncompromising, brutal and compelling. The message I take from it is to generally avoid overly popular works, with a few notable exceptions. Never underestimate society's unquenchable thirst for mediocre trash.

Sean Barrs Marita wrote: "I gave up pretty quick on the first book, but loved Battle Royale, which has a similar concept, just was better written."

It's not the concept I hate, but everthing else ;)

Sean Barrs Nickols wrote: "seriously go to hell. HATER"

A little extreme! ;)

You have a pet cauliflower? How old is it?

No, seriously though, his baking skills are over powered. it's not fair on the other contestants. He should have been made to leave his tools at home! ;)

Sean Barrs Giedre wrote: "haha I love Hunger Games but I totally see where you are coming from. Your review made me laugh. well done."

I'm glad you like it. I'd much rather like it than hate it. And thanks, I'm glad it was funny!

Thanks!

I do agree, but it's all about perpective. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and vice versa.

Nghi I don't hate this series like you do. I actually really like the first 2 books. But your review made me laugh so hard and I have to agree with some of your points. "I shall use my cake decorating skill to our advantage!" So hilarious and so true lmao

I had some big problems with it, but the cake thing just pushed me too far. It just makes no sense. ;)

harley.equine WOWZA !!! You really really dont like the hunger games! Just sayin I LUV the Hunger Games thank u!!!!!!!!! Katniss is sick hunting skills and Peeta is awesome w/ staying blen ded into the crowd.

harley.equine Nghi; I totally agree w/ you.

message 33: by Laura (new)

Laura Your point about Peeta's cake decorating and camouflage made me laugh. :)

strangertrails (jamie) This makes me laugh and is 100% true. The difference is that I don't have the heart to say it.

Vanessa (The Wolf & Her Books) OK I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about Peeta but someone told me they felt like the author was reversing gender roles by making him a useless baker and Katniss the action-oriented one. But I just realized saying that is sexist in itself to say that baking was defined be a gender to begin with 🙄

message 36: by Greg (new) - rated it 2 stars

Greg Yes, every time Collins brought up anything pointing to the huge plot problem (75 years of watching children being killed), things sorta fall apart.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

LOL SAVAGE! I kind of liked the first book and second, but the last book was messy. Didn't even make sense. The point of the book seem to be lost and the love triangle got stronger. I feel like money was involved big time with this franchise.

message 38: by Kay (new)

Kay Reading this review made me laugh aloud. It one of those badly-stifled and ugly, ridiculous sounding laughs that takes you by surprise. It was the kind of laugh that makes you embarrassed when nobody else is in the room. For that, I thank you.

message 39: by Lex (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lex Poot Funny I liked the fact that Katniss is an unlikely hero not willing to lead. Unlike so many other books where the hero is the heir apparent.

Alexis Rogers-Esparcia Everything you said is 100% true and funny but I still love The Hunger Games.

message 41: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne I didn’t hate it but I also didn’t think it was good enough to make movies. The exact reason would be it didn’t make me think and I definitely just thought they were fluffy and easy reads. I didn’t think many of the characters were super compelling; Peeta was the absolute worst. Whiny. The second book was definitely redundant. I would have rated them just okay.

message 42: by Dean (new)

Dean the Phantasy Guru Also, they are all a blatant rip-off of "Battle Royale" by Houshun Takami.

message 43: by Hugo (new)

Hugo All the more reason why i didn’t like the movie or wanted to read their trilogy.

Sean Barrs Amanda wrote: "I actually can't decide if the movies or the books were worse. Why did I read all of that? Why did I watch of that? Eek."

books are way worse! (though I never watched the third/fourth movie)

Sean Barrs Dean wrote: "Also, they are all a blatant rip-off of "Battle Royale" by Houshun Takami."

I've heard that said before, though I've not read it myself

Sean Barrs Morgan wrote: "LOL SAVAGE! I kind of liked the first book and second, but the last book was messy. Didn't even make sense. The point of the book seem to be lost and the love triangle got stronger. I feel like mon..."

yep, third book was the worse of the lot- it was all over the place- i wasn't sure what i was reading

Anthony LOL, great review.

message 48: by Beth (new)

Beth M I haven't read these but I prefer Battle Royale over these movies any day.

Sarah The "deeper message" is supposed to be one about PTSD and whatnot (or so I've been told).

Yamna Lmao, although I don't hate The Hunger Games, "baker boy" made me snort
Have you read the Divergent series?
