Reading Murakami is like experiencing someone else's dream. Trying to review Murakami is like trying to remember your own -- scattered events, confusing narrative lapses, inexplicable elements, petrified whale penises. A series of images:

And then you wake up. And wonder what that was all about.

Joel I felt like it didn't fit in the review but also:

Glee well....probably not going to read this one, but always LOVE your reviews... you really should be making money doing this!

Joel murakami is great, you should try him sometime. norwegian wood is a good starting place. or if you are adventurous, the wind-up bird chronicle.

message 4: by Glee (new)

Glee Maybe I will. I'm almost afraid to add to my stacks. My books have assumed (what I have to guess is) a Murakami state -- I have so many clamoring at me that they have begun to take on personalities. I'm sure that when I fall asleep, they breed. And party. And plot different and interesting ways to kill me if I don't read them soon. The only thing keeping them in check is their individual pitiful hopes that "but I might be the next one she picks..."

and yes, several in the stack are from your recommendations/reviews... the Ozark Architecture one, for instance... and a couple of YA sci fi..

message 5: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine i like this even though I see no pictures.

Joel why do you see no pictures? are you at work?

message 7: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine i am

message 8: by seak (new)

seak That was probably the sweetest review I've ever "read".

Joel thanks. murakami is really all about the mood he creates. also it always makes me nostalgic for japan. where i have been once. for a week.

Stephanie H I just finished reading this book and I love your picture review. I agree that it was so much like experiencing a dream, and I find myself unable to recall any of the purposeful details, just vague images. Captured the book perfectly

message 11: by Joel (new) - rated it 4 stars

Joel thanks! i pretty much feel the same way about all the murakami i have read.

s.penkevich Ha that made my day. Yep, that pretty much sums up the book.

message 13: by Keir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Keir Thomas This is BRILLIANT!

Stefan and in this case, Murakami managed to turn it into one of MY dreams. Reading it is like dreaming with your eyes open. Especially towards the end where reality is becoming more and more abstract and you enter in a different dimension. You either feel it or you don't.

message 15: by Hudi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hudi so accurate - this is exactly the reason i can never successfully recommend Murakami to anyone. my answer to their 'what's it about' is always '......'

message 16: by Joel (new) - rated it 4 stars

Joel Thanks!

I always check when I get a new comment on this review because I am afraid the links for the pictures are going to be broken...

Bettie Brilliant - that is just what it is like.
:O)

thanks!

i always wonder if it is apparent that picture #2 actually is a petrified whale penis.

Stefan I thought it was a giant spliff

Joel Stefan wrote: "I thought it was a giant spliff"

wouldn't that be a confusing evening.

Stefan Well, it was a real 'trip'. Certainly towards the end I was completely sucked into the story, losing all sense of realism and it felt GOOD. (asn I'm not advocating substance abuse ;-) )

Althea Ann Yep, this review sums it up perfectly!

David Bobis Haha. I love these images!

Daffodil I was going to write a review then I saw your images. Thanks for saving me time! Where is the sheep man with his mishappen sheep outfit? :)

message 25: by Jai (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jai Baraoidan Lol. Nice use of pictures. That's basically the gist of the book. :D

Ecnerwal44 Thanks for the review!

message 27: by Uli (new) - rated it 5 stars

Uli Vogel Absolutely concise review on an indescribable book.
I always read before falling asleep and never watch tv in bed because I realized my (partly lucid) dreaming turns into colourful adventures if I choise the right book. No need to explain to Murakami freaks what HE does to my dreamworld :-)

message 28: by Seth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Seth Jacquay you forgot the Cutty Sark

message 29: by Mark (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mark I am listening to Idiot Wind by Dylan somehow it all fits. that ear you posted is ugly by the way

Faunetka Love your pictures, and review. I'm exactly in " small, basic hotel". Wish I could ever see the dolphin hotel;)

Adrienne Hughes I love this review.

Wilbert Hi "j", how's your bar going ;-)

Brex (Bookosaurus_Rex) "Petrified whale penises". Oh my. Lol!!

Hajir Almahdi 'Reading Murakami is like experiencing someone else's dream. Trying to review Murakami is like trying to remember your own -- scattered events, " wow

Milly Cohen 500 likes??? Who are you???

Jurgita Oh... You forgot the whisky! And vinyls!

Bruce Geddes Great review. My sentiments exactly.

Robyn I've just read this and this is exactly my thoughts 😂😂

Tobias I couldn‘t find more fitting words to describe my experience with this book!

Ana Banana Best possible review.

message 43: by Chris (new) - added it

Chris Via One of the best reviews on the Internet!

Dipintus "Like experiencing another's dream" is probably the nest description for this book I have read - there is probably a lot of subtext and symbolism I could get a feeling for that got lost, probably because of the cultural gap between me and the author.

message 45: by Chan (new)

Chan Eum Fantastic

Mbgirl Speaking of vinyls....I actually had the luck of staying around the corner of his former jazz club in Sendagaya... always, he seems to insert the neighborhood, and the mention of jazz!

message 47: by Ri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ri Ok this is the best review ever. The only review actually.

Pranaya Couldn’t have said it better!! Actually no one probably could’ve said it better...

Cyndie Best review ever 🤣

Nathan Beddoe This is exactly how I felt after reading Kafka on the Shore. But I felt it about this book as well.
