His wife has left Wilderness Tips lying on the coffee table, and he picks it up. Over the last twenty years, several women have told him to read it. He doesn't like to be pushed into things.

Now, though, his curiosity has got the better of him. The first few pages do make him a little uneasy. The scene where the boys are spying on the waitresses' beach party through their binoculars. He also feels like a voyeur. But that soon disappears. He isn't overhearing her private conversations: Margaret is talking directly to him. After a while, he identifies the tune that's started playing in his head. He goes over to the CD shelf, and looks around until he finds the Roches. He skips forward to "The Married Men".
One in Louisiana, one who travels around
One of them mainly stays in heart-throb town
I am not their main concern, they are lonely too
I am just an arrow passing through
He can hear Margaret's ironic, teasing, sexy voice, as they lie in bed together and she tells him another story. "It's something that happened to a friend," she says, and he wonders if it actually happened to her, or if she made it up. He doesn't care. It's enough just to listen to her.
One of them's got a little boy, other one he's got two
one of them's wife is one week overdue

I know these girls they don't like me, but I am just like them
picking a crazy apple off a stem
He's in the middle of "The Bog Man" when he realises that his wife's come in and is looking at him curiously. He has to suppress a guilty start.

"Did you learn anything useful?" she asks.

He doesn't quite know what to make of her inflection. What was that French expression she likes?

"Mi-figue, mi-raisin," she says. Damn! She's reading his mind again. He wonders what else she discovered there.

"It's okay, honey," she adds softly, as she comes over and sits next to him. "I'm so glad you finally read it," and for some reason he finds that he has tears in his eyes, and she does too.

I thought Hairball was very funny.

Ceridwen, your sense of humour is even more robust than I thought it was. And that's saying something.

Alan my 18 year old daughter's a big Atwood fan so I'll get her this (and borrow it from her before she goes off to uni)

Girls are so much more sophisticated than boys! Just can't imagine our son reading anything like this...

Alan oh she's way more advanced than I was at her age. She's into Canadian women writers in a big way - Atwood, Munro, Shields. She also likes Salinger and a few other blokes too (someone called Shakespeare).

Manny I imagine she must already have read The Robber Bride? I loved that.

Alan no it's on her list - she's read The Handmaid's tale, Oryx and Crake, Cat's Eye, and - I think - The Blind Assassin.

Alan no it is The Robber Bride, she corrects me not Blind Assassin and she's only half way through and has had to abandon to concentrate on her forthcoming exams. I'll tell her about Ann-Marie Macdonald. She likes Shakespeare partly I suspect because she saw Jude Law in Hamlet in London last year.

C. I loved The Blind Assassin. Fantastic depiction of age, and cool book-within-a-book stuff. It was a while ago now, though.

Gullet What a good review of the book I am half through. I just love it. She sure looks at the world with clear eyes.
I likes the Robber bride too, but her short stories are even better.

Madeline I got to meet Margaret Atwoood when she came to Atlanta to give a lecture - she signed my copy of The Tent and told me her granddaughter's name is Madeleine and I almost fainted.

OK, I'm officially jealous. Definitely on my list of people I'd most like to meet! Lucky you.

Moira What a great review! This collection is one of my favourites.

//DEAD FROM ENVY ....wow. That's fantastic!

Manny Thank you Moira! I just loved it. Best short story collection I've read in ages.

Madeline She's really, really funny in person. She talked about going to high school in the 50's and taking home economics. For her final project she wrote an opera about fabrics. AN OPERA. ABOUT FABRICS.

Also she's like the cutest little old lady in the entire world and was wearing a very sassy red scarf and I really wanted to grab it and run, but that would have been rude.

Manny //DEAD FROM ENVY

Moira, is there room in that grave, or do I have to dig my own?

message 18: by Alan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Alan Grace - my daughter - wants to meet her. She's hoping to get into UEA for the Eng Lit/Creative Writing course (Atwood visits there now and again I understand) but needs 2 As and a B. Last week I had this conversation with her. Her coursework had been marked (40% of the overall mark) and I said:

How did you do?

I got 64.

Per cent?

No marks.

Out of how many?

64.

I'm sorry I had to say, proud father etc. My other daughter also reads a lot (she's more into Cloud Atlas and the Twilight saga) but she's doing film studies at uni. I won't mention them again in a boastful way - mainly because Grace has told me not to...

sorry sorry, I won't do this again I know it's terribly boring for others to read...

ALWAYS.

Manny Why thank you Moira!

And Alan, you may boast about your daughter as long as you don't do it too often :) I hope she gets into her course... sounds like she's made a good start! Is she also on GR?

Alan My oldest duaghter is (the Twilight/Cloud Atlas one), but she hasn't added anything to it since May last year, and she only has one friend - me. Grace isn't.

Jordan Glad that I could contribute to another great review! ; )

I have to say my motives were purely selfish though because I wanted you to read Hairball. I am happy that you seemed to like the rest of the collection though! Curious to see what you think of the next one. Currently I am reading Dancing Girls, which is pretty kick ass.

I have Robber Bride next on my list, it arrived the other day from Amazon. After reading the back I can tell I'll probably like it.

You know how I feel about reading Alpha Females! ; )

Manny Jordan, thanks for recommending this book! You really should check out the other stories too. And as for Bride, they don't come much more alpha than Zenia :)

Bluebeard's Egg should be here in a day or two...

Jordan You have got to read this! Pretty awesome:

That was indeed very good! I must read some of his books soon. Keep meaning to but just haven't got there yet...

Manny By the way: for people who like The Married Men, I just found . Enjoy!

Glad you liked it. I just added Sea of Poppies to my reading list.

Manny Abigail wrote: "This collection has one of my favorite short stories of all time, Death by Landscape. I think I may have to reread the whole thing sometime soon... (she said hopefully)"

In almost any other collection, Death By Landscape would have been the stand-out, but here I actually thought it was one of the weaker stories! You should definitely reread it.

Manny I know. But move this one near the top!

Manny I think so!
