Wicked takes the relatively modern fairytale of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and plays "What if?" What if The Munchkins weren't sweet and innocent, but a backwoods superstitious lot? What if Glinda the Good Witch, is actually a shallow socialite- "good" in physical beauty only? And what if The Wicked Witch of the West isn't really wicked at all- but misunderstood and a product of her upbringing?
Interesting concept ... I just didn't buy it.
This story scathes religion, government, and society in a bizarre, horribly preachy way, and often, in too boring a manner to get its point across. Someone needs to tell the author his point would have been better made if it hadn't been crammed into overblown conversations from the characters. (Characters the author didn't bother to round out enough to make you care to invest in either.)
The Musical is SO much better. Go see it rather than wasting your time and money on this snoozefest.

The musical is so so good! LOVE the soundtrack! I can't wait to see it again one day.The book?? Just plain weird.

Yep, I was underwhelmed with the book also, the musical was AWESOME!
