it was amazing
bookshelves: recommend, children-s, owned, gorgeous-covers, 5-stars, beautifully-written, reread, i-love-these-characters, reviewed, fairytale, favorites
Read 3 times. Last read December 27, 2019.

Does anyone have access to a rooftop? Preferably in a big city, or at least a town of reasonable size. High enough for it to be noticeably a rooftop, but absolutely NO higher than that because I have a mildly-to-seriously debilitating fear of heights. Maybe you’re an electrician, or a building super, or simply a very sneaky person with a skill for discovering high-up places. Whatever. I just need temporary roof access.

Because, ahem

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND I NEED TO SCREAM IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

This is creepy and exciting and beautifully written and filled with wonderful characters and settings and scenes. I love Neil Gaiman, as of recently, and I most especially love Coraline (both book and character). I love it enough to read it multiple times, and also read the graphic novel at least once (possibly more), and also see the movie several times over (including in theaters with my whole family, including my very very small and very very scared brother).

I saw the movie before I read the book, and for that I repent.

There are so many little things from this that have stuck in my memory: the character voice of the cat; the talking terriers in Miss Spink and Miss Forcible’s apartment; the all-knowing circus mice; the fact that when Coraline had to feed herself, she went to the grocery store and bought herself a bag of apples and a whole chocolate cake (the biggest mood ever).

Also, that reminds me that this is the best book ever for talking animals.

I just love this story. I love everything about it. It is, for me, a perfect book.

Now I want apples and chocolate cake.

Bottom line: I love fairytales, and this is my favorite one.

Lane I love that you loved it! In high school I was obsessed with the movie and wanted to read the book and brought my pretty pink copy to school one day. Turned away from my lunch table in the cafeteria for approximately 3 minutes and when I looked back, it was stolen. 😡 I have yet to pick it back up.

A really nice review I must say...you have actually evoked my interest upto a level that I do wish to read it this instant. Although I neither knew about the book nor the movie, I am soooo damn waiting to put my hands on this book and on your (indirect) advice through your review, I am going to read the book before watching te movie.
Thanks a lot :D

Lune All I know is that I can watch, read and listen to Coraline invite times and still not get sick of it and if that doesn’t show how skilled Neil Gaiman is, I don’t know what will

◍n Comfort and joy are not things commonly associated with this book as far as I know…I think you need to be messed up in a deep humane level to see this book as comforting

message 26: by Stefani (new)

Stefani I will admit, I’ve only seen the movie and it left much to be desired (IMO). But, I have been curious about the book. Was the movie bad? No. Just lacking.
I may now be adding this to my TBR list.

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Sounds very cool and being a Tim Burton fan, enjoyed the animated feature. But like most adaptations, it sounds like liberties were taken. Regardless glad you loved it

literally no one's here you moron this is my favorite comfort book. I grinned when I saw those five stars.

Amanda (has no self-control re: books) I feel like this will scare me…as an adult…but I think I’m going to do it (I do not like clowns, puppets, mannequins, dolls, e.g. and I remember when the movie came out. My cousin said the book is worse.
