This was a best seller, award winner and all round publishing house wet dream... apparently. The furor surrounding this passed me by. Ok, I did notice it a bit. This book was advertised in supermarkets a lot and it was cheap and plentiful and stacked high in a way which made it mostly unavoidable.

I got it cheap on kindle and that's the only reason I had it in my possession. According to the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ esteemed book palate you either loved this book or hated it. You may deduce my emotional state regarding this wacko marriage psycho fest by the following statements:

1. I read it in one day and therefore I
a. loved it
b. was too lazy to move off the sofa and seek alternate entertainment
c. went into a sustained literary coma and the "speak n spell" activation on my kindle was turned on so I was forced into listening to this book while in my comatose state against my will
d. was ambivalent

Answer: b. Yes I am that lazy. Sue me.

2. Nick Dunne is
a. my ideal lump of manliness. Mmm dreamy.
b. an idiot who had it all coming and therefore elicited no sympathy from me
c. terrible vain, self serving husband who deserved all the psychological torture

Answer: None of the above actually. I didn't really engage with the character and so gave him very little consideration at all.

3. Amy Dunne is
a. a new role model. Sociopathy is my new favourite hobby
b. Evil
c. Unbelievable in every sense from the character to her motivation
d. not worth analyzing.

Answer: a. Look out all future shovelmonkey husbands

4. I'm hoping the book will
a. make it onto the next 1001 books to read before you die list - it so deserves it!
b. head off to the bargain bin
c. spawn all manner of exciting sequels.
d. quietly be superseded by another page turning summer paper back and no more will need to be said about it

Answer d. Gone Girl was the new 50 Shades and 50 Shades was the new Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or something. It will never end.

Kemper Nice to see a Shovelmonkey review. Are you back home or out on another Indiana Jones type adventure?

Shovelmonkey1 In transit from Iraq. Yeah I've been a massive slacker!

Lounging around Iraq digging holes in the ground.... Geez, talk about an easy gig.

Safe travels.

Shovelmonkey1 Well there is a small amount of civil unrest at the moment and being on the Kirkuk road is probably not a good choice so everyone is homeward bound. I'll be working in London soon hopefully, for a while at least. Anyway at least it's not Route Irish!

Kemper How are you supposed to go around getting artifacts out of booby-trapped crypts if people are going to cause a ruckus?

Hopefully being in London will allow you to do what's really important: Posting on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.

Shovelmonkey1 Hehe yeah hopefully. Seriously though Iraq is an amazing country. Stunning scenery and the Zagros are just beautiful. The people were amazing too. I was there for the elections too which was interesting. First democratic elections since the departure of the coalition. There's only a limited difference between a party and a riot in some parts!

Clodagh Phelan I loved Gone Girl, but it was a present and somehow all the hype passed me by. Being a contrary sort of person, had I been subject to the hype I might well have felt differently. However, I absolutely loved your review. I really enjoy reviews that are different, refreshing and highly entertaining, as yours is. Thanks. PS. Comparing our shelves we seem to feel the same about a lot of things, so the odd difference in viewpoint has got to just add that crunchy bit of grit!

Clodagh Phelan P.P.S. Like you I couldn't engage with the characters which makes it quite odd that I loved the book. It was the plot and the fact that it was utterly different that grabbed me.

Manny I nearly proposed to you on the spot when I got to 3a, but managed to control myself before I pushed the Send button. Nice work.

Nandakishore Mridula Caroline, I think you should put a spoiler alert.

quietly be superseded by another page turning summer paper back and no more will need to be said about it

I think this happened with The Girl on the Train, another novel which had a lot of unlikeable characters with dubious mental ability.
