THIS IS ACTUALLY ZERO stars, but it won't be listed if I put zero, so, just so you know - ZERO!.
I thought this was going to be a really entertaining read, but I'm giving up. The main character makes no sense, whatsoever. We're told that she isn't able to do magic and then she does magic. Huh???
And then we have the vampire sneaking in her window and watching her sleep, fascinated by her sleeping. Where have I read this before? Let's see....... can anyone think of where they might have read this? Anyone?
I don't care that she glows when she sleeps. I already know it's because it's linked to her ignoring her magic or because it's trapped inside her or because she's simply too cheap to buy a nightlight(yes, I made that last one up), but I'm not really intrigued enough to find out.
What I've learned thus far is that the author is very proud of her knowledge of Oxford and the library there. I could have used far less information about walking around the town, where she goes rowing, where she's sitting in the library for gosh sakes and other unimportant minutiae.
I got this book before it was listed as part of a trilogy.
BEWARE, series alert.
I might have found the energy to finish this one off, but I can't imagine reading three books like this one. Nope, not gonna do it.
Fifty pages. That's it. Thank you and good night!

Had to create a brand new shelf for this one: "books-i-choose-not-to-finish"

On the positive side, I'VE DONE IT! I've actually stopped reading a book that I felt was a waste of time. I didn't think I would, but I did it. (Yes, I know it's a small thing to celebrate, but I'm going to do my happy dance anyway!)

Thanks! You stayed with it longer than I could. Like you, I usually feel a need to finish and sometimes(rarely) I am pleasantly surprised. Not in this case. Giving up felt great.

Sadly, yes, it is.

Nina Foster I quit after around 350 pages. That’s how hard I tried to hang in until things started to happen. After 350 I decided they weren’t going to. After sleeping together and he still hadn’t bitten her I was disgusted. I grew up in the Dark Shadows era of TV, where afternoon programs showed vampires actually bite their love interest, and made things happen. Did he ever bite her? I don’t know, I threw the book on the floor then put it in a donation box.

kari That sounds like me. I thought it was just too silly and made no sense.

Kathy Bertelsen I love how every thing can be seen in different eyes. I myself love the book

I'm glad you found something to enjoy in this one. It just wasn't for me. Happy reading

Joni I also loved the book. In fact I am rereading it.

Wendy I read a sample and because it starts decently, I bought the trilogy. It has been an utter WASTE of my time and my brain, which feels as though it is dying the longer I try to read. I'm on Book 3 now and it's excruciating. I want to make it to the end so I can write the most scathing review possible.

I think awhile back I tried reading it and really wanted to like it. But a bad book is like bad sex. Just quit it! lol I actually hoped the show might be better. And I was impressed by the setting and some of the ideas I could get into that were interesting but when she suddenly falls goofily in love with him I saw the poor writing. And then on from there. I must have wanted to like it for giving the tv series a try! But why would the porn version of bad sex be any better than the actual bad sex? lol Right?

kari I haven't seen the tv show. I'm curious enough to watch an episode to see if I feel the same watching it.

message 214: by Vibeke (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vibeke Vegetarian That's what I thought, too, in the beginning... but then it gets SO good you can't put it down and by Book 3 you're dying to get to the end. I loved it so much!

Jennifer Mccann I too bought the trilogy so will persevere. I’m 90% into the first book and for the most part have been skimming through. It’s incredibly boring, far too many pages of information I neither need nor want, far too much alchemy details, too many descriptions of ancient books, too much staring at each other and sleeping; how can Diana always be so tired?? All she does is eat and sleep. She should be as big as a house, no wonder she lives in stretchy black pants. She is meant to be a strong woman but comes across as a total wimp. I really dislike her as a character. And what happened her career?? She was flat out researching and suddenly stopped...... The story has stated to kick in a bit now that I’m almost finished. I just hope the next 2 books don’t follow the same format.

Christina I’m so glad I am finding reviews like yours to agree with. It’s hard for me to quit books. But after reading the reviews and getting through a mere 114 pages with repetitive descriptions of wine and tea and, like you said -character backgrounds I don’t care about- I decided to not torture myself 🥲

contemptous claire yeah i def agree if you and I LOVED THE WAY YOU SAID IT

Lisa Martin I was having such a difficult time slogging through this book. Finally finished it, but it just dragged on forever. So glad to be done.
