It was tough, Susan - just pick one of your faves ;)
Is there one book that you re-read again and again?

Could we replace a really small shelf with another near it?

For me, at least, the links aren't going to the shelves. They seem to have defaulted to the genres again. This is what seems to be working for me:
In your browser's address bar, paste in "http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/" followed by the name of the shelf you need.

So - My reporting thread is above, but I do want to clarify. If you are in your 50's you read as many books as it takes you to get to shelf 500? And what if your birthday is in the middle of the game? Do you just go by what your age is right now?
As for my favorite book of all time, I agree with Susan. It could be any number of books, but four came to mind right off the bat, so ......I am going to roll a die to choose one.

Hhhmmm... maybe that's what we should do as a group - have a Mini Mondays (challenge)
Arrgh, I think you've just triggered that reading challenge button in my brain!
I think I will have to keep this idea for another year but thank you, Ebony, for the inspiration ;)

I HATE the new "Read" and "Want to Read" indicators. I keep looking at the green "Want to Read" button and getting confused. It doesn't mean I've put it on my to-read shelf; it's a button to let me do that. I like the old indicators much better. Does anyone know where the right general GR place is for me to post that comment?

The first one is right: If you are in your 50's you read as many books as it takes you to get to shelf 500.

@Susan: Why are they reverting to that again!? how annoying... I'll try to log something on the feedback thread later today... in the meantime, you could also scroll down the 'genre' page and click on popular books which will take you to the shelf page ;)
Also, here's the link to the GR Feedback group: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...
I know that some people do NOT like these new buttons! I have to say they're pretty ugly!

I am finding this hard to do - copy the shelves into excel spreadsheet.
My attempt ended up with every other line being the number of people who shelved that particular way. Since I am in my 60's....that is a lot of correction to do. I tried to just highlight the shelf name but my system would not do that!

yes and yes, Amy.
Tien, I think I have figured it out.
However, I do have a question about shelves. I landed on a shelf labelled "World Culture" which took me to "New Releases Tagged Cultural".
Usually there is a "more books tagged..." that can be clicked on to get a full list to review. This particular one did not have that. Am I stuck with just the 8 books listed? Can I use one of the lists noted on the same page or the "most read this week" books? I was hoping to do this with books I own, but this shelf is too narrow if I have to use the New Releases.
Actually, I decided to go with the Most Read This Week list of cultureal books. OK?

Nope. Don't bother with the corrections.
(1) Insert a blank row above the first entry if there isn't one. That puts the first shelf on row 2.
(2) Double each number you need. So, to find the 66th shelf, I looked at row #132.

I don't know how all of you are doing this planning so quickly. I finally settled on The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula Le Guin as my favorite book, so I have my shelf list. But each shelf has so many to choose from that I feel like I'm only just beginning to plan.

The rules state One week per book with a maximum of 10 weeks but I'm assuming that doesn't mean one book per week, we can read more than that, we just have X weeks to complete the challenge, depending how many books we have to read (up to a max of 10 weeks). Is that right (I'm being a little dull I know)?

Hey guys,
Re: the shelves links issue, I've posted on the GR feedback this morning. Sorry, it's taken me a while, I just haven't had the time and then sometimes, I forgot *oops*

I chose The Handmaid's Tale as my favorite
shelves
N- Gone Girl (library)
N1 If I Stay (books i own)
N2 1Q84 (wish list)
N3 Shadow and Bone (read 2012)
N4 The Iron King (ebook)
Books read: 0/Y
Game Period: 5 weeks (up to 12/25/12)
This has turned out to be a terrific game, because it helped me discover books I would never have seen any other way, because so few people had read them -- hunting through tiny shelves was frustrating, but very fruitful. (See message 32.) AND several are books my library doesn't have. I found Ammonite in the used bookstore yesterday.
I'm happy to see you having fun exploring, Susan! The Hunt is definitely the most exciting part but then if the read is good, it's even better :D

I've got 2 more books (well, 1.5 since I'm in the middle of one now) to go but like you, Coralie, I'm pretty much giving up on Timber, LOL - *sighs* all good intention but not moving much out at all!

Object of the Game: To read the required number of books (see rules below) within the correlating number of weeks.
Go to the page of your favorite book of all time.
Click on 'See top shelves...' and you will see numerous shelves that your book has been placed on.
1. Count down to the N-th (sorry, can't do superscript) shelf and read a book from this shelf.
**N = your age (which you do not have to disclose ;) )
2. Your next book will be from (2N)-th shelf.
3. The next book will be from (3N)-th shelf, and so on...
Up to shelf X.
**X will be 200 if you're in your 20s or 300 if you're in your 30s, etc.
For example, I'm 32, so for my first book I'd be reading from shelf #32. Then my second book from shelf #64 and so on until I reached shelf #300 which means that I'd have to read 9 books to complete this challenge.
If you are 29, you will only have to read 6 but if you're 55, you'd have to read 9 books too.
Note: Be careful to choose a book which has at least your required number of shelves (one page has approximately 100 shelves).
I would suggest to highlight the shelves, copy & paste into excel (DO NOT SORT) and count them down there, it will make it easier for you. Let me know if you need any help, I'll be happy to assist.
IF, for any reason, you can't find / get a book from a shelf you're supposed to read:
1. If your last birthday was less than 6 months ago, go to the shelf above (ie. from above example, instead of shelf #62, I'd go to #61) & pick a book from there.
2. If your last birthday was more than 6 months ago, go to the shelf below (ie. from above example, instead of shelf #62, I'd go to #63)
