Jacalyn | 454 comments Another one bites the dust! 8 down, 1 to go! Can I do it??????????

Books I've completed:

2001: Grave Peril
2002: Summer Knight
2003: Death Masks
2004: Blood Rites
2005: Dead Beat
2006: Proven Guilty
2007: White Night
2008: Small Favor

I'm just starting 2009: Turn Coat

I've also finished Maximum Ride Book 4: The Final Warning this month.

This was a rough one. My brain is bubbling. LOL I don't think it would have been as bad if I'd been mixing stuff up in between or I'd had time to think straight... in and out of town and 8 Dresden books in a row...

Well I'm going to go sink my teeth into Turn Coat...

YES YOU CAN!!!

Jacalyn | 454 comments It's really getting crazy... I am not so sure I WANT to read another Dresden... I'd like to just take a book break but there's no time. LOL I'm not disliking it, but it's just been a LOT of Dresden...

message 356: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) I have never read the Dresden Files are they good?

message 357: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Kyle, Yes... but skip the first one. It's AWFUL. Anything you need ot know from book 1 is repeated adequately in following books.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Lady Ozma wrote: "Kyle, Yes... but skip the first one. It's AWFUL. Anything you need ot know from book 1 is repeated adequately in following books. "

Thank you for postiong that. I've been thinking of reading them, so I won't bother with book 1.

message 359: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments You are welcome. If you watched the tv show, you have a good background anyway... really though the first book has a good story but it's just badly written. It carries the bane of "first novel" combined with "first novel in a series". I really think the author tried a little too hard. It is about a billion times better in the second book and it just goes up from there. I've had enough people agree with me on the first book that I think it is the way to go... I had my husband skip the first book as well. He really enjoyed the series so I think that you will be fine.

I will tell you that reading 9 in one month though is a bit much. Like any series you just start to get burnout... I'm enjoying Turn Coat, don't get me wrong, but I'm also ready to just have a break from Chicago at this point. LOL Of course if there was another book to go I'd probably have it lined up for reading as well... so take that for what it is worth. :) Turn Coat is number 11 in the series.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Wow, thanks for all that info. I am going to be at the bookstore today, maybe they will have book 2. I need to find the reading order and print it out. Otherwise I get all messed up.

message 361: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Here you go:
Book 2: Fool Moon
Book 3: Grave Peril
Book 4: Summer Knight
Book 5: Death Masks
Book 6: Blood Rites
Book 7: Dead Beat
Book 8: Proven Guilty
Book 9: White Knight
Book 10: Small Favor
Book 11: Turn Coat

There's some various short stories as well but that's too much... ROFL Sorry. That's harder to piece in but they don't really matter quite as much.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Hey! Thank you soooooooooooooo much! I'm going to take this list over to B&N.com and see how many my local store has.

Thanks again!

message 363: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments You are welcome! What's the point of me reading the entire bloody series if I can't take advantage of having the book right here to help you out! :) HEHE Storm Front is the first one BTW. Just so you know when you see it. Hopefully your store will have the older ones.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I just did a search and it says my local store has #2, so I reserved it. Now I will wait for the email telling me they actually have it!

Thanks again!

Kyle Borland (kgborland) lol, sadly my library only has Small Favor and Turn Coat :P

And book 4 and 5 of his Codex Alera series :P

I hate it when libraries do that! I really am going to have to start buying book :)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Yep! It's on hold for me so I will pick it up later today.

Kyle, it does get frustrating so I just started buying books.

Feehan's Dark Curse came out in hardcover (grrr) so I borrowed that from the library, but when it comes out in paperback I will buy it so that my collection stays complete.

I'm not addicted or OCD

message 368: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) lol, this library has the ENTIRE Feehan collection its insane :P

Lily (lilithesque) | 217 comments I read,I believe on Butchers site, that when he approuched a publisher, he had three books already written. I found this out after I was on book 4. As I looked back the first three really werent that good. I mean they were ok, but I had read some of his fury books and they were so much better. the main reason I kept going was everyone raves so much. I think after the first three books the quality of writing improves vastly, although the story was quite good in the first three, the flow and skill wasn't really there. I love the Fury books and have read all of them. I dont know if I could have done a month crunch on them though. I am so impressed. Now I love the dresden files and I am about to pick up Small Favor from the library.

Fury? I guess I'll have to look into those too.

*sigh* So many books, so little time.

Actually they aren't called "fury" they are the Alera Codex series Moi. :o)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Thank you!

message 374: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Lily, I defnitely think that in each book his writing gets better. The second and third ones were OK. But the first one was awful. I bought the first three together 8 years ago and I wanted to kill myself after struggling to make it through Storm Front. I'm not kidding when I say it made my eyes bleed. I wanted to carve them out with a rusty spork just so I wouldn't have to read any more. The second one, in comparison was great! However it was still a little rough around the edges. Not in such a severe way, though.

I am now happy with the series and I will actually look forward to the next book after Turn Coat. But I'm never going to be the rabbid fan, either. Probably because I still get shudders down my back thinking of Storm Front. Now my husband, he skipped Storm Front because of my advice and he all but stalked my mother for Turn Coat. LOL

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments I'm calling time on this challenge. I'm currently reading Urban Shaman, but I'm just not in the mood to finish it. It's not a reflection on the book - I'm just more in the mood to either revisit some characters I already know or for something with a bit of romance (which doesn't look like it's coming in Urban Shaman). So, I'm going to go and read something else today.

I had fun and read a few books on my tbr pile I wouldn't have got to for a long time i imagine.

I am going to skip this coming month cause I have to much stuff to read not applicable to the June list.

Have fun and thanks ya'll.

Lily (lilithesque) | 217 comments As for the Alera Codex. It is straight fantasy. Classic fantasy is my favorite so I enjoyed it alot.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I'm looking for a good, strong UF series without a lot of sexuality for my son. He's 15. Any suggestions?

Ok, not sure but that this series isn't true fantasy, but try the Hawk and Fisher series (8 books in the series, you can get 2 books with 3 stories in each from Amazon) by Simon Green.

message 391: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments I can't believe I did it but I FINISHED!!!!!!!!!

YAY!!! I wrapped up Turn Coat earlier today and that takes me to the very end of the Harry Dresden series that's been churned out... nine of them in one month... all those freaking pages and massively connected story arc and two conventions and making of a new costume...

I feel ACCOMPLISHED! LOL

2001-2009 Challenge done with nine Harry Dresden books written by Jim Butcher. I think I need a pizza... and a large quarterstaff... maybe a cool trenchcoat that is protected from EVERYTHING...

BTW I also read two other books... I seriously needed to get Harry outta my head before diving into June's 9 PNR books so I read Jane Green's The Other Woman this evening...

Now to figure out WTH to read next. Hopefully I can wade through that darn list...

Kyle Borland (kgborland) Uniquely Moi wrote: "I'm looking for a good, strong UF series without a lot of sexuality for my son. He's 15. Any suggestions?"

The Mortal Instruments series is really good :). It has a girl main character though..but finding an Urban Fantasy without a girl m/c would be difficult. Theres sexual tension but no sex. :P

Lets see...um...Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Thats not straight Urban Fantasy but its fantasy and everyone says they are really good. Lots of mythology. The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series...there are 3 books out. They take place in Paris a lot so those could be urban fantasy. Um..The Hunger Games, it has a girl main character though.

The Artemis Fowl Series. The Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong (its her YA series), another girl MC. OOO and the Bloodline series by Kate Cary is REALLY good. It takes place during WWI times and its involved with Dracula's bloodline and stuff like that :P

The 3 Heirs Trilogy is really good. The Warrior Heir, The Wizard Heir and the The Dragon Heir. :D And maybe Mortal Coils by Eric Nylund.

Sorry about all the suggestions..I Wasn't sure what kind of books he liked so I just gave a bunch of different kinds :P

message 397: by Kyle (last edited May 31, 2009 10:30PM) (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) Cassandra Clare.

It starts with City of Bones. Though it might throw you off because the first book has a shirtless dude on the cover but don't worry, there is no sex. Its just supposed to show you the tattoos the shadowhunters have, they're the characters the book revolves around :P

The other two covers are normal and the books are FANTASTIC. In my opinion at least :P

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Awesome! Thanks so much! *hugs Kyle*
