hello again May,
Just got back from a couple of weeks away, and read Longbourn. It's very good - well written and researched, and skilfully done. Only problem for me is that I love 'Pride and Prejudice'! Without giving anything away, there is something about the way in which the original story is woven into the plot of Longbourn which rather changes the personality of one of the characters I love. But don't let that dissuade you from reading it - it's a great read!

Annie, I just can't do it.....as someone who has read and reread Pride and Prejudice so many times, I am just unable to read Longbourn or Death at Pemberley or any of the others....the original is just too sacred to me and I would be scarred for life if the author changed anything about the characters I love so much!

Hello Beth, I know exactly what you mean! I approached it with trepidation, and tried to distance myself from the original. And sometimes that is possible here; the new story of 'below stairs' is well conceived, and occasionally there are moments when a different and plausible reflection of a member of the Bennett family works for me. But overall, although I must emphasise that this is well done, I am going to reread Pride and Prejudice and hope that there are no echoes of this alternative world to disturb me!

I have refused to read it as well for fear it might change my whole outlook of pride and prejudice I read pp on a yearly basis and I just love it every time..

funny, without really thinking about it I have probably read it yearly as well - it's like sometimes I just miss it so I need to read it again. My heart always pounds at the end.....never have loved any book like I love this one and could never let anything ruin that.

I loved the movie version with Colin Firth - the one with Keira Knightly was so-so. Have any of you seen one or both of them?

I'm reading The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, about a boy in Malawi who figured out how to make windmills. A good read.

Lovely little book, filled with heartbreak and humor. I listened to this one and loved the narrator's Irish accent and the antics of the characters!

Jody, I can't wait to hear what you think of CALEB'S CROSSING. I thought it was quite the novel. I loved that the author took a single historical fact and wove such a story. Enjoy!

What Looks Like Crazy was one of my absolute favorites at one time but it has been so long ago I forgot why.

I really enjoyed it - gave 4 stars :)

I am reading Russian Winter, and 60% through but not as happy with the book. I was hoping for more history of Russia during Stalin regime but instead I got lots of lesson about Poetry, Music, and Ballet at that time :-(

Started two yesterday. (1) a GR giveaway win - "In Praise of Hatred" and (2) "The Tilted World". (1) is set in Syria & written by a Syrian. It's very different from the books I've read set in other Mid-Eastern countries. (2) is written by Tom Franklin of "Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter" fame with Beth Ann Fennelly.

I'm currently reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. I'm about 3/4 of the way through & I just love it - I hope you enjoy it as well!

I just started A Constellation of Vital Phenomena yesterday and am about 10% of the way in - so far it is really good.
