Rules for the Fall/Winter 2013-14 Challenge:

1. This challenge will start September 1, 2013 (12:01 am EST) and will end at 11:59 pm on March 31, 2014.

2. All books read during the challenge dates, September through March, can count towards tasks. So, if you join in November, anything you read that FITS a task can count towards the challenge as long as you read it AFTER September 1st. If you are less than half way through a book BEFORE the challenge starts, you can use it for the challenge. If you are over the halfway point, you cannot use it for the challenge.

3. Books can only be used for one category.

4. Re-reads are fine, except where stated otherwise.

5. All books should be over 150 pages unless otherwise stated. If you read a book that is not quite 150 pages, please make sure that it for a lower point task and you are only able to read an "under 150 pages book" once. Please get an "ok" from us before you try and count an "under 150 pages book" for a task. The only exception is the Children's Book task. We will allow that one to be 100 pages.

6. To claim your points, you must post completed tasks in the "Leaderboard & Completed Tasks" thread. Please include the title, author, the task number it was for, and your total number of points to date. You can update your task list but we will not be checking those for your points. That is just for your records only.

7. If you have any doubts as to whether a book fits a particular challenge, please feel free to ask.

8. Above all, remember this challenge is supposed to be FUN, a good way to tackle some of your TBR list, and to expand your horizons.

9. Those that finish/win the challenge will be able to pick a task for the Spring/Summer 2014 Challenge.

10. Most Important: HAVE FUN!

2. One and Only: Read a book by an author that has only published one book. This can be a newly published author as long as they are not ready to release a new book by the end of the challenge.

3. White Elephant: Read a book from the list of “White Elephants. Everyone that is participating in the challenge, send me the name and author to a book you loved and would like to "pass along" to someone else. I will post all the suggestions. Pick something from the list to read.

25 points

1. Battle of the Sexes: Read 1 book by a female author and 1 book by a male author about the same type of thing, person, event, etc. How do they compare? (This can be fiction or non fiction. Examples would be two mystery authors, or 2 biographies about the same person.)

2. Out with the old, In with the new: Read 1 book that has been on your to read list for a really long time and 1 book that has been added really recently. Or 1 book that was published over 50 years ago and 1 book that will be published during this challenge. (September 2012 through March 2013)

3. Intimidating Read: Read 1 book that is very intimidating to you, then read 1 fun book as a reward.

4. Birthday Celebrations: Read 1 book each by 2 different authors with birthdays during the challenge time. September through March. This website may help.
- September 21 is Stephen King's birthday.
- October 4 is Anne Rice's birthday.
- November 11 is Kurt Vonnegut's birthday.
- December 16 is Jane Austen's birthday.
- January 1 is J.D. Salinger's birthday.
- February 13 is Judy Blume's birthday.
- There are tons more, doesn't have to be any of these.

5. We Didn’t Start the Fire: Pick 2 different topics/people listed in the lyrics and read books about them. (Can be fictional accounts of the events in novel form)

6. A Balanced View: Read 2 books with opposing points of view. They can be fiction or nonfiction. Examples would be books about a war, politics, sports teams rivalries, vegan vs carnivore, home schooling vs public schools, etc.

7. Body & Mind: Read a book about a person with a physical disability/handicap and a book about a person with an emotional/social/psychological disorder.

8. Two Become One: For this challenge you are going to read two books—whatever you want. The caveat—the two books need to form a proper sentence. For example you might read "This Is Where I Leave You" and "Two Alone" by Sandra Brown as it makes the sentence "This is where I leave you two alone" or you could read "I Am The Messenger" and "In a Sunburned Country" as it makes the sentence "I am the messenger in a sunburned country." It can be zany and nonsensical but it has to be a proper sentence.
