Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments Hello everyone! I'm very excited to play this game. To be honest I would prefer not to be captain. As for a name Two-Bit Players.

message 4: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments Hi! I'd prefer not to be team captain, mostly because my work schedule is a bit crazy, so I may not be able to roll at a consistent time every Sun/Thu, but if no one else volunteers, I'll do it.

And I'll second Angie's suggestion for the team name. I like it!

message 5: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I'll volunteer to be captain. I am retired and spend way too much time on goodreads anyway. I am a horrible insomniac so I will probably roll the dice in the middle of the night. No problem. Nice to meet you all. Great name for the team Angie.

I am excited to get going on this challenge because I read SO many different series.

message 6: by Tineke (new)

Tineke (dutch-book) Here I am! Thanks for the push Sheila. So, we already have a team captain, that´s great, because I can´t be one either, because of my busy life. I second the name!Anything else we need to think of/arrange?

I was wondering about the time difference for you Tineke. I am in the central time zone in the US and will absolutely have the die roll posted before 9 am on the Thursday and Sundays. What time will that be for you?

message 8: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) OK, I guess I am your captain by default and our name is Two-Bit Players. I'll let Jenne know.

My next question is as your captain the last thing I want to be is the posting on time police. I would assume that since we all signed up for this challenge that we are fast readers. If you haven't posted by say noon on Wednesday and Saturday do you want me to message you?

You're in DST right now? Then we're 6 hours later here. So here it is 17.35 PM, and you're still in the morning 11.35 AM. Before 9 AM would mean, for me, before 15 PM.

message 10: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) DST hasn't started yet so it is 10:35 AM

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments I generally try to read fast and shouldn't be too hard to post reviews on time.

message 12: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments Thanks for being captain Sheila! I appreciate the willingness to keep us on task, but hopefully, we'll all be on top of our schedule and you won't have to message us very often.

I'll warn you that there may be some Wednesdays when I won't be able to post a review until after 9pm (eastern US) because of my work schedule, but on those days I can post a quick place-holder before noon to let you know, so no one will worry!

message 13: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I didn't figure posting on time would be an issue for this crew but thought I should ask. No offense meant.

It looks like the captains have to prepare a special linking post of the teams reviews so it would be really helpful to me if after the dice roll and you post the book that you are going to read if you would reserve a spot where you will post your reviews so that I can prepare this linking post ahead of time. Either reserve a new post or post your review in your original - this is the book I am going to read post. Just let me know so I can link to the correct post for each of us. Thanks.

I am anxious to get started. I think this challenge will be a lot of fun. I hope I can use the same books in some of the other challenges I am doing.

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments That's really go idea I'll be happy to do that as well.

message 15: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I am SO ready to get this game started. I already have six series books loaded and waiting on my kindle each one a different number in a series. (not that I'm OCD or anything.) I'll be posting the number I roll by this time on Sunday's and Thursday's. I hope that works for everyone.

message 16: by Theo (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Sunday Oct. 6 - Two Bit Players rolled a 4 so I read book 4 in the Theresa MacLean series - Finished Oct. 7

Defensive Wounds by Lisa Black Defensive Wounds by Lisa Black

This book is the 4th in the Theresa MacLean forensic expert series. Theresa is called to a crime scene at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Cleveland where the body of one of her nemesis has been found. A female defense attorney who is notorious for ripping apart the testimony of forensics experts. There is a huge pool of suspects since the cops investigating the crime are all quite happy to see the witch dead. To complicate things even further, Theresa's daughter works at the same hotel along with her love interest who becomes the prime suspect. I liked this book and will read more in the series. I give it ★★★★

Iron Tears (Legend of the Iron Flower, #4) by Billy Wong by Billy Wong
Finish:10/7/13
Rate:5 Stars
Review:I have to be honest I love a well written female character that is total bad ass. Rose Agen rocks! I love this series so much! This book is my favorite of the series so far. Rose Agen is a mighty warrior that is freakishly tall, strong, and determined to do what is right in her eyes. I highly recommend this series.

Theo | 1929 comments Space 4
Reading: Extras (Uglies, #4) by Scott Westerfeld by Scott Westerfeld
Finished: 10/09/13
Rating: 3 stars
Review: It's been two years since I finished the originally-intended trilogy, so it took me awhile to get back into the Uglies universe, especially because the original characters (Tally, Shay, David, etc.) are not the main characters in Extras. While it's called the fourth book in the series, it really comes across as a stand-alone set in the same world, and it does re-cap important events from the earlier novels, usually through Aya (our new protagonist) remembering a history lesson. I doubt Tally Youngblood envisioned a fame culture and urban sprawl when she introduced the "mind-rain," which switched off everyone's "bubbleheadedness"(a condition that left everyone docile and clueless), but it's refreshing to see that dystopias don't become utopias because the hero saves the day. We're people who make mistakes, we're never going to live in a perfect world. My biggest problem with this novel is that too much happens, but not enough happens. There are a lot of themes introduced that have relevance in our current culture, but they are scattered and not always fully developed. But at the same time, the actual story is a pretty big let-down in that the dramatic conclusion falls pretty flat. So, a solid read, but nothing spectacular.

message 30: by Tia (last edited Oct 08, 2013 06:08PM) (new)

Tia Jenkins (tia_jenkins) I'm going to read Among the Barons by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Finished: Oct 8
Rating: 3 stars
Review: Amog the barons is the 4th book in the shadow children series. Luke Garner is still passing himself off as Lee Grant but things are about to drastically change. He must go and live with his "parents" and they seem to have a plan for him right from the start. It was well written and had a good story line but I wouldn't say it's one of my all time favorites. I would recommend this to younger readers but if you are older than 12 you may not enjoy it as much.

message 31: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Great everyone's picked a good book to read. Happy reading all. I look forward to reading the reviews. I have read something by each of these authors except Billy Wong.

message 32: by Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (last edited Oct 07, 2013 11:26PM) (new)

Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ (wolffaerie17) | 2160 comments I'm really enjoying Billy Wong's Legend of the Iron Flower Series:Iron Bloom, Iron Flower, Iron Bonds, Iron Tears, and Iron Champion are all the book in the series so far. It's a high fantasy series much in the keeping with Songs of Fire and Ice by Martin if you like reading fantasy.

message 33: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Is everyone getting ready for our next roll? I'm trying to finish a book I am reading so I am ready to go tomorrow.

message 38: by Sheila (last edited Oct 10, 2013 06:04AM) (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Well guys here is how it stands at the moment. Tineke hasn't posted her review as of yet. I PM'd her yesterday around 5pm Central Time and she hasn't responded. There is a time difference issue since she is in the Netherlands. I also PM'd Jenne this morning to ask if since some teams have 4 people only if we could go ahead and proceed since 4 people from our team HAVE posted. I haven't heard a response from Jenne either although it is early yet. So right now we are in a holding pattern. It is possible that Tineke could post her review sometime today. I will monitor the thread and roll the dice as soon as I can.

Please stay tuned.

message 39: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Update: Jenne has PM'd Tineke as well and it is still possible we will be able to roll the dice sometime later today. Sorry for the delay Two-Bits.

message 41: by Tineke (new)

Tineke (dutch-book) I´m so sorry! This clearly means that I can´t be on top of things right now and I underestimated this game. Please accept my apologies. I will pull out of this game, so that I won´t bother you with my lateness. I will message the moderator for this game about me pulling out. I´m glad though that we have this time difference, so you have a whole day in front of you still. Sorry.

message 42: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Thanks for letting us know Tineke. I didn't want to be the posting police or a nag.

message 43: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments No problem! This one is a bit of a commitment. We will do this game though as a one book a week after this one is over since that'll be around the holidays. Thanks for the quick response!
Sheila go ahead and roll away :)

Tineke (dutch-book) Sheila wrote: "Thanks for letting us know Tineke. I didn't want to be the posting police or a nag."

You weren't :) It's just annoying to wait for someone who isn't responding. I do get that. It looked at first that I could make it, but I guess I undestimated it. It's still fun though, and I will try to follow your game and participate in my own way (without really participating.) I just messaged Jenne and I wish you guys a lot of fun!

message 45: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Okay team we got the OK to roll the dice and I rolled a

Which puts us on space 10 so we can read book 1 of a series, book 10 of a series or a standalone book. Don't forget we also have the option of reading the alternative book as well.

Valentine by Tom Savage Valentine by Tom Savage

This was my first time reading this author but definitely won't be the last. This book really creeped me out. I read a lot of murder mysteries but this one involved being stalked. I seem to handle serial killers better than stalkers. The MC was in with a group of popular/mean girls in college who played what they considered an innocent prank on a male classmate on Valentine's Day. Well this man NEVER forgot the prank and now for each Valentine's Day one of the group is dying. Scary book. I give it ★★★★

Review:This is the first book in a series which is very unique in concept. It's about grandparents named Beebop and Nana and their grandchildren Aidan and Maggie vacationing over Spring Break while their parents are camping. They encounter a world they didn't think was possible only in myths and legends. Where they learn the power of family and love. Looking forward to the next book.

Reading: Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor by Laini Taylor
Finished: 10/12/13
Rating: 5 stars
Review: Karou's not your typical 17 year-old. There's the blue hair (that actually grows out of her head that color), the tattoos (that change and vanish seemingly on a whim), and, of course, there's also the fact that she was raised by chimaera (half-human, half-animal creatures that would probably be called monsters or demons by her human friends and classmates). But, while we know she's not normal, we don't really know who or what she is, because she doesn't either. Daughter of Smoke & Bone is adventure, mystery and paranormal romance all rolled into a fun, smart package. It's filled with memorable characters, like Zuzana (her best friend, a human, who decides that she will probably be the kind of old lady who shoots children with a crossbow), Brimstone (her foster father, a chimaera, who warns about inessential penises), and more, who fill out this story, giving it heart and humor in perfect balance. I'm looking forward to book two!
