July 2009 Reading Challenge

I'm new to the group and originally thought this would be an easy challenge because I'm a fast reader. I've discovered the true challenge, however. In order to read books in every category, I need to start some new series. Then I don't want to stop! The real challenge for me will be to read a single book in each series, without immediately following up with book 2. I don't know if I can do it. I guess I'll find out.
My tentative list:
1. vampires Father Mine by J.R. Ward
2. werewolves
3. shifters Destiny Kills by Keri Arthur
4. gods/goddesses/immortals
5. demons/angels - City of Bones by Casandra Clare
6. witches/warlocks/sorcerers/mages Storm Front by Jim Butcher
7. fae/fairies Darkfever by Karen Moning
8. aliens/space cowboys - Awaken Me Darkly by Gena Showalter
9. psychics/ghosts/humans with paranormal abilities - Ghost Touch by Mary Winter

1. vampires Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake
2. werewolves Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole
4. gods/goddesses/immortals Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole
5. demons/angels The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan
6. witches/warlocks/sorcerers/mages Ravenous The Dark Forgotten by Sharon Ashwood
7. fae/fairies Tithe A Modern Faerie Tale by Holly Black
8. aliens/space cowboys Ashes of Midnight by Lara Adrian
9. psychics/ghosts/humans with paranormal abilities Mind Game by Christine Feehan

Thanks,
Michelle

I know what you mean about the series thing, and to tell the truth City of Bones is gonna be hard not to follow up on, it was a very good series. Good new is they are pretty easy and fast reads, and very fun. Good luck!
lol Daisyj--Oz (my daughter) did an entire series for one of her 'monthly challenge' sets. The Dresden Files series. It was for the 1 book from each year of the millinium.
And I too have trouble with not going off onto tangents when I read a new series. Fortunately, I tend to get my challenge reads over fairly quickly (except for May--and there were extenuating circumstances that month) so that I can then go and polish off any other books in a series that i have. :o)
Hang tough--or see if you can't figure out some way to get them all into the challenge.
Ann in VA (I'm signing them like this since we have 2 Ann's in this month's reading group)

Ann,
Thanks for signing your posts Ann in VA. That will help me a lot when I do updates.
I actually have to get creative because we have several participants that have the same user names, like I think I have 3 Michelles for this month.

2. werewolf: Marked by Moonlight by Sharie Kohler

5.
6. witches: My forbidden desire by Carolyn Jewel
7. fae: Deadly Redemption by Kathleen Korbel
8. aliens: Ender in Exile or Downbelow Station
9. psychics: Hidden by Eve Kenin
I liked Desire Unchained, and I didn't. There were parts of it I found very hard to read--I think the hero and heroine behaved stupidly from time to time, and I'm really not into torture, or even reading about it, and I don't like reading villain POVs--and yet, I liked the story overall. Go figure.
I'm currently reading Lord Braybrook's Penniless Bride by Elizabeth Rolls. Don't know which PNR I'll pick up next...

Despite the title, I really liked Slave to Sensation. I think that being book 1, there was some confusion in the "world building" for me; but I think that book two will be much more clear. I really liked the main characters. I've already ordered the book 2, and I'll be reading it as soon as I'm done with this months challenge.

Michelle,
I'm a big fan of the Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series. Keep reading and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Also read this month:
Knights Fork by Rowena Cherry
Prom Nights From Hell by Meg Cabot et. al.
Dealing in Murder by Elaine Flinn
Yet another down. This one is actually a mystery. But its a weird premise book. Maggie, the title character writes cozies set in Regency England. This is book 3 of the series (I found it at the library by accident and I WILL be getting the rest of the series.) Basically, what happens is that the 2 main characters from her series Viscount Anlexandre Saint John decides that he wants to come into the real world (even knowing that he is a character in a book) and convinces his sidekick and best friend Sebastian to come along. Now they are in NYC in the 21st century, still solving crimes and living with Maggie.
I gave this book 5 stars, just for the originiality of the plot.

Well, 5 down, 4 to go. :o) I give this one 3.25 stars--mainly because its dark, dark, dark PNR. Almost verging on dark UF. I prefer a book that is not quite this dark, even if it did, ultimately, have a HEA ending and all the villians "got what was coming to them."

I should have gotten a lot further along considering the three day weekend, but alas... for some reason this book took FOREVER. It was like I would read and read and read, and then find I was only 10 pages further than when I started. It was kind of freaky, actually. Maybe a witch put some kind of time curse on me.

Yet another one down. That's 6 so far. This last one was a 4.25 out of 5. Its a "first in a series" novel and we all know what they are like. :o) But I did enjoy the story, so . . . Since it IS a first in series, there was no HEA yet. But, looking at the backs of the other 2 books in the series, I'm thinking book 3 will have that.

Well, yet another one down. :o) This one is a very humourous vampire story. It features brand new (as in last night) fledgling Jory, champion frozen turkey bowler C. Thomas "Tommy" Flood and Norton, the Emperor of San Francisco and Protector of Mexico. Despite the appearance of Norton this is set in modern day San Francisco. For those who don't know there history--there was a historical Norton, an Englishman who lived in San Francisco during the 1860's and 70's. He was a little insane and believed himself to actually be the Emperor. Locals treated him as such, bowing and calling him "your Majesty." (Just a little historical tidbit, for everyone.)
