I think I might change my book choice from Sentinel (Covenant, #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout to The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner since I just found out it was being made into a movie and the MC is being acted by one of my favorite Teen Wolf Boys, Dylan O'Brien!

I'm starting to feel better too, but my flu has turned into a cold and this crud is really hanging on! I have 10 days to get myself back to normal. I refuse to be sick when I go away on vacation!!!

Brief Review
Bess's life is filled with tragedy. Her brother, father, and beloved little sister all die of plague. Her mother is then charged, tried, and found guilty of being a witch. In an effort to save her daughter, Bess's mother binds her to the wicked warlock, Gideon Masters. Bess finds herself drawn to Gideon, but knows he is pure evil. After her transition to immortality, she spends centuries evading Gideon. She eventually finds her way to the Summerlands and is free.

What I liked: I really liked the way the author continually reinvents Bess, moving her forward in life. I also enjoyed going back and forth between the past and the present.

What I didn't like: Sometimes in the reinventing, it almost seemed like a constant repeat. Same situation, just different people, with Bess being the center focus. For me it tended to drag the story out--but that may just be me :)

Overall, it was way out of my comfort zone, but I'm glad to have read it. It was a good book.

Grave Secret (Secret McQueen, #5) by Sierra Dean Grave Secret by Sierra Dean
Finished: 3/19/14
Rating: ★★★★

Review:

I had a slow start with this one because I was busy at work and had a big gap with the previous book. Once I was able to focus on it though, I was just as hooked as ever.

Secret McQueen is unique. She is the only vampire/wolf hybrid in existence and that is not a secret known by many. Stupid pun, I know, but accurate.

We pick up right where we left off in the last book. A promise of one night spent with Holden. At least, that's what you're led to believe. Secret has a gift. She manages to mangle her life up with the decisions she makes almost as much as Chess Putnam.

So much happens that I won't even go through all the details. Her mother has sent wolves to hurt her and start a war, a fae is killing humans, she's been slacking on her investigating job, and the her heritage may become public knowledge. And let's not forget the love triangle that's not so much a triangle anymore. It's down to two. Vampire or Werewolf?

Amongst all the chaos she is given an opportunity to be normal. Human. What would you do if given the opportunity to wash it all away and start over?

This ends with a cliffhanger. I'll be reading the next one for our 6 roll :)

I've finished my book and I am so emotionally drained that I just can't even think about writing my review tonight. So I'm going to post first thing in the morning while I get everything prepared for our new roll and by that time Sandy should have her review up as well.

When her estranged sister, Lillie is murdered, Beret Osmundsen travels from NYC to Denver to try to solve the mystery of her murder. Lillie had been living in a brothel and was pregnant when she died. The book is very well-researched and we get a vivid picture of life in the underbelly of late 19th century Denver. However, I didn't really care about the characters and much of the dialogue was repetitive. The mystery aspect was well done. I thought I had guessed the killer's identity, but I was wrong. This is my first book by this author. I'm not sure if I'm intrigued enough to try another.

Review:
I will try not to gush over this book to much but who am I kidding.... I FREAKING LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THIS BOOK!!! ok enough of that on to the good stuff.

I have been reading this series since it came out 3 years ago and to have it be over is not only fulfilling but extremely upsetting. You see I have been involved with these characters since the get go and now that their story is finished I can finally say with 100 percent certainty that this series at least for me is one of my all time favorites and I will know doubt go back and read and re-read these books many times.

There was no shortage of laughter, pain and heart break in this last edition, we see characters we've come to love... die and also be redeemed in light of the terrible things that are happening around them. To say the Jennifer Armentrout is a fantastic writer doesn't really give her the credit she deserves... she has made me love, hate, rage, laugh, and cry and all by doing what she loves the most. I'm sorry the series is over but in away I'm glad that all the things we have been wondering and hoping for have been resolved is such a way that you are left both laughing and crying. Well done Jennifer...Well done!!

Brief Review
Cara Devon has suffered much in her young life. Being sold to an evil Lord of the aristocratic society at the tender age of 14 by non other than her father, she has made her own way in the world. Upon her father's death, she has decided to locate and dispense with every valuable artifact her father collected. Things take a strange turn when young women of the aristocratic world are found murdered. There is a serial killer on the loose and he is slowly making his way to Cara. Throw in the strange and compelling Viscount Nathaniel Lyons, and the story gets even better. Lyons is a known ruler of the crime underworld, and Cara needs his help to sell off the precious artifacts. His help comes at a price, and Cara finds herself irresistibly drawn to him.

What I liked: I loved almost everything about this story. There is plenty of intrigue, mystery, romance and action to keep you wondering what will happen next. I really loved the way Cara was able to overcome her adversities and make a better life for herself in spite of what she suffered. She has a wonderful personality, which often times bordered on sarcasm and dry humor. She is one tuff lady who can take care of herself. Viscount Lyons--loved him as well. I especially liked the tender way he seemed to treat Cara.

What I didn't like: Grammatical errors that were distracting. Also, I found myself having to go back and re-read a section from time to time because the story wasn't flowing smoothly, and didn't make sense.

Overall, this was a great book and I'm really looking forward to book #2. What I liked best of all is the wonderful world created by the author, and the fact that it is way out of my comfort zone on so many levels. I owe you one, Abbie!

Week 7: Space 61

The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner by James Dashner

Finished: March 25,14
Rating: 4 Stars

Review:
The Maze Runner is the story of Thomas a young man who wakes up in dark box with no memories and only know his own name. He is soon thrust into a strange new world called the Glade in which he is a prisoner along with dozens of other boys and soon one girl. Only their prison is really a giant maze in which Thomas feels he has been before and has an over whelming need to solve.

I really enjoyed this first book of the Maze Runner Trilogy. There was no shortage of action and I found the world building quite good. I'm not usually a fan of Dystopian novels but this is one of the better ones I have read in a long time. I'm looking forward to seeing how this book with be adapted to the big screen in September when the movie is released and I will definitely be reading book 2 in the very near future.

The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1) by Julia Quinn
3/26/14
★★★★

Daphne Bridgerton is the 4th of 8 children and fearing being left "on the shelf". The Duke of Hastings is an eligible bachelor who has been traumatized by a father who treated him badly (in fact, he let people believe his son was dead). Daphne and the Duke concoct a plan to fake a courtship so that (A) Daphne will be more appealing to other suitors and (B) the Mamas of single ladies will leave the Duke alone. Naturally, they fall in love and face the obstacles of his trauma, her older brothers, and his desire to never have children. I enjoyed the story, characters, and the funny dialogue. My one complaint is that Daphne knew absolutely nothing (at all) about sex which I found very unbelievable given she had 3 older brothers. HR is my go-to guilty pleasure and I'm glad I have found a new series to read.

Review:

A psychotic feral wolf, a sarcastic latent wolf, and a crotchety old woman walk into a bar...

If only I could finish that joke. I bet Taryn could!

Taryn Warner is sarcastic with a capital S. She will do anything to get out of an arranged mating to the abusive Roscoe. Even mate with the psychotic wolf, Trey Coleman. He's big, he's bad, and he tends to go feral. He needs alliances and she needs an escape. It's only temporary, right?

This book was so much fun! The dialogue, the cast, the whole shebang. Taryn may have been latent but she was an Alpha all the way. And talk about snark! Man, she's good! The constant insult bashing between her and Greta were hilarious. It was also S-T-E-A-M-Y! *whistles*

"is there no way you could just pull your bottom lip over your head and swallow?"

“Hey, I have a suggestion, why not put a condom over your head if you’re going to act like a complete dick then it makes sense to dress like one.

Fans of Shelly Laurenston will love this. I know I'm looking forward to the next book!

Review:
The sole survivor of a fire that killed his entire tribe, Edh is weak from hunger and heartsick at being alone. He knows he must hunt in order to survive so he digs a pit in hopes of trapping an animal. Not only does he catch his meal, he also catches his mate. His mate is wearing strange coverings and makes a lot of noise but he knows she is his to protect and provide for. And of course to make babies with.

Okay, so I wavered with my ratings for much of this book. It started out decent, then it was really boring and repetitive for a good chunk of the middle and then towards the last 30% it got better. It's pretty simple, spending a lot of time on mundane things like fishing, bathing, cooking and making babies.

I should also mention that this was completely told in Edh's POV. The caveman who doesn't speak. Sure, Beh tries to teach him but he is not interested. He learns a total of 2 words besides their names. I found that frustrating. And in case I didn't mention it, he likes to make babies.

That being said, Edh was really very sweet. There were quite a few tender moments between them. There were also a couple of very sad moments too. So I can see why so many people love it. In my opinion, a good editor would have improved this book a great deal. Too much was left in and out, if that makes sense. All in all, I liked it and I think it will appeal to a lot of people.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

Read from 03/30/14 - 03/31/14
Rating: ★★

Brief Review
This was a most unusual story and one I'm still not sure quite how I feel about. On one hand, it was quite compelling; on another, frustrating at times. A man returns to the place he grew up to attend a funeral. He's drawn back to the ocean at the end of the lane that's really just a pond, where it all started. Many years ago, this nameless boy went through a series of strange events when he was only 7 years old.

What I liked: I really enjoyed the unique imagination it took to write the book, and I was pulled into the story from beginning to end.

What I didn't like: The story became quite confusing to me at times, and while I appreciate the uniqueness of it, it was frustrating from time to time.

Overall, it was a unique story...wonderfully imaginative. I will definitely read more books by the author.

Michelle Sanderson returns to her family's inn on Puget Sound after a 10 year absence. Her former best-friend, Carly, has been running the inn. Michelle left because Carly busted her with her fiancee 2 days before the wedding. Also, Michelle's dad ran off with Carly's mom when the girls were in high school. To top things off, after serving 3 tours in Afghanistan, Michelle suffers from a gunshot wound to her hip, PTSD, and alcoholism. The book focuses on the ladies saving the inn from foreclosure, resolving their issues with each other and their families, and Michelle getting help for her problems. I've read other books by this author that were romance. I think I like her better as a chick lit author. This is the first of a trilogy that I will definitely continue.
