Rob (nefariasbredd) I'm about half way through Altered Carbon. Also listening to Caliban's War. I had started Midnight Tides, but have that on pause while I read Carbon. Also have The Sandman, Vol. 7: Brief Lives waiting for me (as well as 8, 9, and 10 on my shelf). I have a sense though I might have to change things up as I have holds out on Ethan of Athos and Bigger Than the Game: Restitching a Major League Life which could both come in short order.

The Hayhurst book (non-fiction!) would jump to the top of the list. And of course moments after I write this, my library system says "in transit" on the hayhurst book. Better finish up Altered Carbon fast.

message 56: by Viola (new)

Viola | 188 comments Finished Magic's Pawn and let me tell you if that had been my first introduction to fantasy I would never have looked at the genre again.

Right now I'm reading Fury of the Demon. I wasn't too happy about certain events in the previous book and I'm not so wild about by the series as I was but I still want to know how it end so I hope this book doesn’t disappoint too much. Because there is apparently one more book coming out, hopefully it will be the last but it is urban fantasy so who knows.

message 58: by Janet (new)

Janet | 51 comments Currently reading Hild, which I'm struggling to get into. Just bought some kindle deals on Empire State and The Alchemist of Souls. Waiting for Roadside Picnic to come in from the library. And when I next have a lull I'll keep working on the Vorkosigan saga (this year's series project), currently at Ethan of Athos.

Except I want to skip all of them and go buy The Tropic of Serpents and The Martian!

Tamahome | 7135 comments The author of Hild was just on the Coode St podcast. She said if you can't get into it after 50 pages, your brain doesn't have the things she needs to tell the story. (around 58 minutes )

So it's YOUR fault if you hate it!

Tamahome | 7135 comments I think she's just saying you need to read it like a fantasy novel (with maps and a glossary) that has some world building, even though it's not really a fantasy (or Sherlock Holmes like).

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

Just started Memories And Adventures by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. So far it's good as I would expect from the author of The Lost World.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I'm super bored by Words of Radiance so far, which is a bummer, so I'm adding The Martian to my currently reading list.

message 67: by Carolina (new)

Carolina I had to leave town very suddendly (to visit family) and so I haven't been able to finish The Handmaid's Tale that I was listening to with my bf. I was lucky and got my copy of Altered Carbon right before leaving, so I started reading it on the plane, loving it so far!. I also finished Ruby Red which turned out to be a pleasent surprise. Just started Etiquette & Espionage

Listening to Honor Among Thieves and really enjoying it so far.

Continue to read some classic Asimov I somehow missed. Just started The Currents of Space.

message 78: by Laura (new)

Laura (conundrum44) | 108 comments I read The Disaster Artist, which is a wonderful account on the making of the cult classic 'The Room.' I just finished Merchanter's Luck by C. J. Cherryh and loved it. I'm about to start Mr. Monk In Trouble as I wait for my husband to finish Words of Radiance. Alright, I might read a few more books as I wait for Words of Radiance.

message 79: by Richard (new)

Richard Coles | 3 comments Recently read Daggerspell by Katherine Kerr, which was quite good. I am close to finishing Rose Madder by Stephen King. Then I am tempted to try and read Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb.

Ditto what Rob said. Man, that book has so much praise from me, if someone DOESN'T like it, I'll feel like I let them down by setting expectations too high...

I better like it. There's about 45 hours of audio. I won't be listening to much else this month

Haha. It's a book I love a lot, but can understand why it's not for everyone. So I'm reluctant to recommend it. I'm always sad if someone doesn't love it like I do.

Thanks for putting your hand up to take responsibility if I don't like it. I was just going to blame Rob before.

Yep, great book, one of my first 5 stars of the year!

Have read The Ghost of the Mary Celeste since then - an interesting book, told through different points of view (including Conan Doyle) but the resolution was a bit unexpected.

Currently in the middle of Influx, which is really interesting.

Influx has an interesting premise. Guy invents an antigravity machine, then the government arrives and covers it up, just like fusion power and the cure for cancer.

Bookboy | 7 comments @Tamahome @Rob - Finished it earlier today, a good story, could really see this as a summer blockbuster with some interesting concepts. Not sure about the comparison to Crichton on the front page, though...

message 93: by Misti (new)

Misti (spookster5) | 549 comments For the first time in a long time, I'm reading three books at one time. One of those is an audio book. I decided to try out audible so I used my free credit for Altered Carbon. I'm about two-thirds of the way through A Game of Thrones. Last week, I was at a conference (There was no TV and no wireless internet in the rooms! EEK!) and felt like reading something a little more light-hearted so I started Redwall, which I read several years ago.

I wasn't happy about the quality of the audiobook for Altered Carbon, but that's not typical for me from audible, so if you don't like that book, I wouldn't hold that against audible.
