Hi guys,
So I have a couple of group reads happening in October (planning to read along with Cloud Atlas which is the other read for October and a buddy read of Y-The Last Man) and decided to get a head start.
Cinder is a re-imagining of the Cinderella fairy tale (one of my favourites) and so far seems like it's going to be a nice easy read. In fact, I have a feeling I could very easily blast through this one today as it's very interesting, nicely written and, so far, has a nice mix of action and revelation that has me going "Ok, maybe I'll just read another chapter!" Was a bit of a fight to put the book down when I got to the end of the first section but no, I'll be a good girl and not binge. :)

possible spoilers ahead, proceed with caution

Right, questions:
1) This is a re-imagining of a classic fairy tale set in the future. Do you enjoy re-imaginings or would you prefer if authors just left the classics alone??
2) Cinder is set in the future, do you think the idea of a monarchy fits in this situation or is Prince Kai just an excuse to stick to the Cinderella/Prince Charming format??
3) Where do you think/would like the story to go from here? Does anyone want a happily ever after or would a darker ending be more entertaining ??

Alison G. (agriff22) | 540 comments Ive already started it since I finished my other book a few days ago. It's a little weird at the beginning, but I think Im starting to see the concept of Cinderella in it. I'll read more tonight and see if I can understand it more. As for question #1, I love fairytales that are redone! We'll see how this one is!

Summer | 237 comments Spoilers for pages 1-96 ahead!

I think re-imagined fairy tales can be great fun, provided they find their own creative edge. Having Cinder(ella) be a cyborg is definitely a creative edge! I also liked the Ch. 1 tease with Cinder meeting the prince with only one foot attached. A twist on the one shoe and all that.

I don't have an issue with the monarchy placement in a future setting. What I was actually surprised by was the story taking place in future China. (And thus, China reverted from a republic to having a king... which is a tad weird as I would expect them to revert to having an emperor instead, if anything, but hey, there's a fairy tale mix going on, so I'm going with it.)

As for where I'd like the story to go, I suppose the main thing I would like to see is a little more character depth. It's early, so I'm not disappointed so far, but I didn't feel a thing when Peony had the plague. There was no build-up. Just a quick chat about a mean mom and a cute boy. Oh, and that she was tired of being at the place she begged to go to just before finding out she was sick. (Okay, I might've actually been a tad grateful for the excuse that would lead her to getting off "camera." *Cough*)

Hi Guys,
Well we're halfway through now and.....

***spoilers ahead***

.......there were some big revelations in the last quarter. Well I say revelations but they weren't really a surprise for me. So Cinder is immune because she is a Lunar (and probably the heir to Lunar).
So what did everyone else think?? Anyone taken by surprise?? Anyone else looking forward to Kai finding out that Cinder is a cyborg???

Alison G. (agriff22) | 540 comments I'm not sure if I'm quite halfway through but close and I've read all the spoilers. I'm kinda diaappointed they haven't mentioned Cinders background more. I want to figure out how she came to live with the "evil stepmother"

Yeah, it's all left very vague. I wouldn't have minded a little information on that and how she escaped Lunar. But of course poor Cinder has amnesia from her accident. How convenient!

Alison G. (agriff22) | 540 comments Wow is all I have to say!! I just finished it and read about 60 pages tonight. The last chapter and a half I couldn't put the book down! It sounds like Scarlet isn't about Cinder and this storyline which stinks!

It was a good read, I really had to stop myself at the end of each section. The storyline wasn't the greatest, very predictable, but I enjoyed the story all the same.

So, what did everyone think of Cinder??
I found it very predictable but I enjoyed it.
Will anyone else be reading the sequel??

Yvonne Bennett (ytbennett) | 33 comments I've enjoyed all this books in this series.

Yvonne Bennett (ytbennett) | 33 comments Winter comes out either later this year or early next, I will most likely read it but really prefer when series end after 3 books.

That's good to know, I'll probably read the whole series too.

Mairzi This book was just way too predictable. I was excited by the idea of a cyborg Cinderella and a fairy tale in the future but was disappointed by the flat characters and predictable story.

And while I love a series as much as the next person, I hate when a book just end with no real resolution or conclusion and in this case no real suspense. I think that each book in a series should be able to stand alone with the subsequent books building on that story. This book fails miserably on that count
