Guidelines for Using the Group Shelf

I understand that when a review is completed that fits the tag, you create a new topic under the thread for it and post the review. It is unclear what you mean by "shelving" such a book or "placing" it on the group shelf.

Thanks for letting me know, Michael! Let me see if I can explain it better.
Everything you said about posting the review is correct.
At Play Book Tag, the group shelf was administered completely by Cindy (because Shelfari's group shelves were very inadequate). Here, we have a great group shelf, and we would like members to place books that they read for PBT on that shelf, in addition to posting your review in the appropriate thread.
Here's how to do it.
1. Go to our Bookshelf by either clicking the link on the home page of the group or clicking below:
/group/books...
2. In the upper left hand corner, you will see a search box. Search for your book title there.
3. That will bring up a list of books. Click on the button that says "Add to Group" to the right of the book you wish to add.
4. The large group shelf has sub-shelves (which really are the same as tags). You will have the opportunity to select the specific subshelves that PBT administrators have set up for you. So if you are adding the book because it fits the tag of 2010, click on the 2010 shelf. If you are adding the book because it is one you are using for Shelfagories, then click that shelf.

Thanks for letting me know, Michael! Let me see if I can explain it better.

Does this start from when the group opened today? ie we don't need to add any pbt books or reviews we did for the 2010 tag on Shefari, correct? For example, Room is on our shelf for the 2010 challenge and I posted a review for that under that challenge on Shelfari, but when I looked just now, I didn't see my review posted there on our shelf although I have posted one on my shelf here prior to this one being opened.
What about yearly challenges? I have a few I haven't added yet from this month. Would I go ahead and add them to our shelf now even if I've already posted reviews here for those books on my shelf?

If you look at the group Bookshelf (top right corner of this page, open it. Look for Room (you can sort alphabetically by title, or click on 2010 on the left menu then scroll down for it - it's not far to look), Click on the book cover or on "view activity" on the right. Yours is the first review I see listed there. It should include all reviews by our group members. I do see yours there.

We ask that you only use the PBT group shelf for books that fit the monthly tag or fit one of the two official PBT Challenges.
Please use your personal shelf for all other books.

Thanks, now I know how to find the bookshelf. Not that it's difficult, but this blindingly white screen combined with our less-than-stellar monitor that self adjusts (ie I can't dim it enough) means it takes longer for me to find everything.

The official PBT challenges being the top 100 books and the Shelfagories, correct? As in that thread I just found. I came back to edit because I had it wrong when I first posted this reply. I'm happy because I'm already working on Shelfagories, but haven't put them in there yet with the move. I have read at least one for that so far.

Yep! Those are our official challenges!
And, just to confuse you even more, we have already added all of the Top 100 NF books to a shelf on the group bookshelf. So, if you read something for that challenge you don't have to worry about adding it to the shelf. As soon as you add your review on your personal shelf, it will automatically highlight your review with other PBT member reviews. One of my favorite features!
If you read a book for Shelfagories, then you will have to apply that shelf to the book you add to the PBT group bookshelf, but we have already created it for you so you just have to check it off on the dropdown list.

Thanks. I just added my first book to the Shelfagories, but may have already read one or two others; I've been waiting to post them to Shelfabories until after we moved. Once I know I did the first one correctly (Queen Lucia, and I posted it in the Shelfagories thread) I'll go through my other books (I'm planning to finish my fifth book this week and possibly one more as I'm in a much better reading mode than last year).

Karin, I just looked up Queen Lucia on the PBT group shelf and it looks good! I see the tag "Shelfagories" and when I click on the "view activity" link on the right, your review is right at the top!
Nice job!

Barbara, let's have Anita and Cindy chime in here too, but I do not have a strong preference whether or not you fill that in but please do not use it for your full review.
If you go to the group shelf and look at Queen Lucia (which Karen just added) you will see "Why we are reading this" at the very top of the page. Karen put in a short description of why she read it and correlated it to the number of the Shelfagory category it satisfied.
I am fine with that if you want to say something short that you think would help other members decide to read the book. I would prefer avoiding personal comments such as, "Mom got it for me for Christmas."

That sounds perfectly reasonable. I doubted it was for review but now I see how it could be used! Thanks.

Anyway, Barbara, I actually hadn't tested out that feature, but I think Nicole's suggestion makes sense. I'm good with that.

I'm not totally averse to a brief statement, but realize that other PBT members may read the book and have different reasons why they wanted to add the book -- so for that reason, I lean toward the idea of leaving it blank.
Great question!!

The only books that are shelved on the PBT bookshelf are books that fit the Monthly Tag - This month it is WWII or it fits the two challenges for 2016 (Shelfagories and PBT Nonfiction 100)
If you read a book that doesn't fit into these categories it doesn't go on the group shelf, you can however add it to your personal shelf. If you write a review you can post it here Other Books, since it doesn't fit the Guidelines which are posted above.
I hope that helps, if not please let me know, or any of the other 3 moderators - Anita, Nicole or Librarycin

You should only be posting books that you have read to the shelf, and only books that fit the tag of the month, and the two challenges for the year. We don't shelve every book that gets recommended, there would be thousands of books on the shelf in no time.
There was a discussion topic where the tag was announced and recommendations were asked for, you can see it here:
/topic/show/...

I'm new too, Paige, and I didn't realize we would put books on the group bookshelf from reading books that fit the monthly tag.

No, people choose what to read, we just open up the topic for discussion so people can get ideas of what to read. No books are put on the shelf unless it is read by a group member, who usually writes a review and rates the book. When you read the book you post it to the appropriate discussion thread; in this case:
/topic/group...
That is where you post your review of the book that you read in the month of February and people will discuss and comment there.

Thank you so much, Linda. I am sure I am making it way more complicated than it is. I have one more question. I was posting some books on the Shelfagories challenge and I noticed that members posted on the shelf and then somehow linked their reviews. Can you tell me how to link your review to a comment post? Geez, someday I will get it.

I will get you an answer to this tomorrow morning :)

Once you found the book, all the way on the right there is a link that says, "view activity." When you click that, you will see the book from the PBT shelf and Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ automatically prioritizes reviews from PBT members.
So, if you link to that page you are looking at, then people can easily find your review.
It does not link directly to your review that way though. However, it is nice because other PBT members reviews are also at the top and it shows PBT discussions that mention the book.
If you want to post directly to your review, you can do that as well.
Instead of going to the PBT shelf, go to your personal bookshelf, find the book you want to link to, and click on the cover/title of the book.
This takes you to the book main page and your review will be at the top. If you click on "my review" it will take you to a page that just has your review of the book and any comments that were made on your review.
You can link directly to that page as well.
I hope that helps!

Not a problem at all, it's a bit of a learning curve, but we are here to help and Nicole has already answered your other question. Any other questions/issues just let us know.

Hi Nicole. Thank you for taking the time to explain. I understand where the reviews show up, I just do not know what the steps are (what to click or copy or paste) to link. When people say "link that", I say, "what? how?" If I copy and paste, the whole review shows up. I am obviously not too tech savvy, but I will eventually get it.

Seriously Nicole, how do you not want to pull your hair out when you try to explain something to someone without much tech experience.

Yes, you are definitely asking very very basic tech questions. Let me see if I can do this again with an example.
To link to a review, you have to incorporate the web address into some basic code. The web address is found in the address bar at the top of the page and generally starts with ......
Do get the link in, you should click on the "(some html is okay)" which you can see right above the text box where you are typing.
If you click that link, you will get a pop up list of some common shortcuts including "link," which is the second one down. It looks like this: *a href="http://www.goodreads.com"*my link text*/a* (except the * are replaced by < and >).
Let's say I want to link to my review of Rogue Lawyer which is at this link: /review/show... and I want the linked words to be "Rogue Lawyer."
Using the template above, I would replace the generic goodreads website with my specific one, and the words "my link text" with "Rogue Lawyer."
So, what I would type into my dialogue box would look like this:
*a href="/review/show... Lawyer*/a* (except the * are replaced by < and >).
When all is said and done, it will look like this: Rogue Lawyer
Does that help?

I get it! I can't wait to get home tonight and link up my world!
I know it seems basic to you, but this is advanced for me!
So appreciate your help! Remember your post for others like me. They are out there! The ones that don't link. Hahaha!

Elizabeth is correct but my point about linking through the group bookshelf is then other members reviews are readily visible, which is why I explained both. Totally your personal preference and whatever you are most comfortable with/easily understand!

Yeah, I thought about that. Sometimes the search of a group bookshelf is unreliable and doesn't find reviews, especially if people have read and reviewed a different edition than the one shelved.

Hope, I see that you added Friction to our group shelf and I can see your 4 star review with the other PBT reviews! Nice job!

Denizen, if you are adding a book that fits the monthly tag, then you have to add it to that shelf. hen you type the book in the box on the PBT shelf and then click "add to shelf" the little dialog box pops up. Under "choose shelves" you will see the current month tag in the drop down list because Cindy pre-adds it every month, select that.
If, in addition, you read it for Shelfagories, then you need to add the book to that shelf. Under "choose shelves" you will see the "Shelfagories" in the drop down list, select that.
If you are also using it for the PBT 100 NF challenge, then the book you read is already on the group shelf because we pre-shelved them.
I hope that helps!

I would like to participate in this group with this book.
I see Message 3 which got me startes. I added to group, added science tag. I did not see 2018 option. I believe I did to go back to add my reading dates, But there is no repoom there for a review. How do I get this review out for memgers of PBT to be able to read. I want to learn how to be a part of, Thank you for yoyr help.

There is a pinned thread in each of the folders with directions on how to post your review of your book.
Do NOT go to a previously posted review and add yours there. You ALWAYS want to start a new thread for your book review.

As for the shelf ... don't worry about start and finish dates. Just make sure that the book is on the appropriate shelf. If you forget, or just find it too confusing to do this, group moderator Library Cin goes through all of the reviews at the end of each month and makes sure the books are on the approprirate group shelf.

Cynda you need to go to the folder that says January 2018:Science. Once you click on that folder on the top of the page it will say new topic. Click on that and start a new topic with the name of the book you read, the author and your rating as the topic. Then put your review in the comment section. As BC already stated you don't have to shelve your book if it's too confusing. Our wonderful moderator LibraryCin will do the shelving for you.

Thanks Rachel for responding. I think I did it correctly. I added to currently-reading and to science. The shelves list looks like others who have added there. It will trust it for now. Thanx again.

Yes, please just put your reviews in your own thread and stick with the current month. Then decide whether or not your book fits the currently monthly tag to decide if you should put your review in the folder for the current tag or if not, just use the folder for that month for "other" books.
As for adding books to the shelf, please only add a book that you read for the current monthly tag! OR, if you are reading it for one of the annual challenges (this year, the PBT decathlon or listopia - these both have their own tags on the shelf), then also please go ahead and add your book to the shelf and add the tag.
As Rachel mentioned, I do go through the entire current monthly tag folder a week or two after the month ends and I will make sure all the books read that month for the tag get shelved (if they haven't been already).
Thanks for asking! I hope that info helps. :-)

I think you are saying that not every book we read gets space on the shelves here, only books that fulfill the desired criteria. For example: This month I post my Asia book here. If I had chosen a listopia challenge, I could post there. That I think I understand.
So my Black Heritage History Month books will not be posted here correct? I am reading them with another group, so the readings are not a wasted effort. I just want to clarify.
Thank you for your patience.
I look forward to posting my Asia book in about a week.
Thanks.

If you have any questions, please confer with LibraryCin before posting your book. LibraryCin will be monitoring our shelf to make sure books are categorized correctly and that these guidelines are being followed.
Please note that if you add a review to your personal shelf for a book that also resides on our group shelf, your review will appear on the group shelf. You may see it, and the reviews of other PBT members, when you click on the view link for that book.
Guidelines
1. Please shelve any books you read that fit the tag. Make sure to place your book on the shelf, already set up by the administrators, that matches the tag when you shelve your book. We will indicate the shelf to use when we announce the tag.
2. Do not add new shelves to the Group Shelf.
3. You will find two PBT 100 shelves (fiction and non-fiction). Please do not add books to those shelves.
4. Please only add books that either a) fit the tag or b) are being used for a PBT sponsored challenge or game or activity. If you are adding books for a challenge, please be sure to place them on the shelf that the administrators have set up for that purpose.
5. Please avoid adding duplicate books. If a book is already on our group shelf, you may edit it to add it to any additional shelves you wish i.e. an additional monthly tag, a challenge, etc.
