C.L. Hoang (clhoang) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

My name is C. L. Hoang but I go by Jim. I'm originally from Vietnam, an electronic engineer by training, and a reader of all kinds of books, fiction and non. I also like to write about my childhood memories growing up in Vietnam during the war, and about an immigrant's journey in America. Hopefully I can share some of my writings with you all later on.

I love boba but I must admit I'm no aficionado of the stuff. I usually just order whatever the eatery serves. Sad, I know. I'm sure I will pick up some useful pointers from the group.

My favourite boba is probably either wintermelon tea with tapioca Japanese roasted milk tea with tapioca. Excited to discover more books

Sarah Mueller (sarahdayanmueller) | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Dayan Mueller and I write contemporary, literary and historical fiction. I am half Filipino and a mix of Jewish Egyptian and Syrian.

Favorite boba? Mango!

I just released my second novel, entitled Home in a Hundred Places. It is inspired by the true story of a Jewish Egyptian spy who escapes a gripping life of espionage and settles in New York City, only to have his memories wiped away by Alzheimer's disease.

This story is something I hold close to my heart because it's based on the true story of my late father's life. Behind the adventure and action of the novel is also a mixed race love story, the one of my parents.

I'd love to connect with other authors and readers here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ!

Ben Truong | 1 comments Hello, my name is Ben Truong (Member 1199), Chinese decent by way of Vietnam and currently living in Canada.

I am addicted to both books and boba ¨C my favorite is Honeydew Milk Tea with Taro and Mango Milk Tea a close second. My reading resolution this year is to read more Asian author books ¨C particularly East Asian as my reading education has been Euro and Western centric.

So, joining a group that both promotes books and boba is rather apropos for me.

message 59: by Ebbie (new)

Ebbie (ebbiebooks) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Elisabeth.
I read too many book at the same time for my own good. I have some knowledge on more "classic" and mainstream Asian books, but I'd like to read more recent Asian authors or less well known authors too.
A few of my favorite books are Norwegian Wood, The Old Garden, L'?nigme du retour. Lately, I've started The Lunar Chronicle and the whole Kushiel saga and loved both first book.
My go to boba is milk tea or oolong milk tea, with all the pearls please. I'm basic and I love it.

message 60: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Kos-Read | 2 comments I¡¯m an actor. I play white guys in chinese movies.

I understand this is a group for Asians and Asian Americans. I¡¯m an ¡°American Asian¡±. I¡¯ve spent more of my life in China than in the USA. So I¡¯d like to add my voice here.

I just published my first novel. The Eunuch. It¡¯s a murder mystery in Ancient China. Published by Earnshaw Books.

A eunuch solves a sex crime.

It¡¯s up on Amazon and in paperback. It¡¯s kind of a distillation of my life living and working in China for the last 25 years - set in ancient China but informed by the desperate times I¡¯ve had surviving in the cutthroat entertainment industry.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

message 61: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (nocturnal_owlette) | 1 comments Hello! I'm just hoping to read more Asian authors and connect with others along the way as well. Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. And my go-to boba order would generally be any of the fruity or even rose ice tea drinks or anything with the milk/cheese foam or even just a durian smoothie, with tapioca pearls of course.

Yi | 1 comments Stacy wrote: "Hello! I'm just hoping to read more Asian authors and connect with others along the way as well. Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn, Th..."

Hello Stacy,

I am Yi, also new to this group!
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is also of my favourite books, Katniss was the first female character that I looked up to.

I am in the process of reading more books related to Asian culture and hope to read more books from Asian authors as well.

If you are looking for any recommendations, I recommend If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha. It tells the story of five women and their struggle with harsh societal standards in South Korea, with themes on social class, motherhood, intergenerational trauma, and beauty standards.

I hope you have a great one!
Yi
:)

brokebookmountain (brokebookmt) Hi, I'm Huzaifah but you can call me Jaypa. I love reading Asian authors' works and would love to discuss about them with you guys! My favourite book would be Ace of Spades, Little Fires Everywhere and Daisy Jones & The Six. My go-to boba tea is hazelnut pearl milk tea with grass jelly ?. Nice to meet you all!

message 64: by Juju (new)

Juju Andalon (poisonoakey) | 1 comments Hey everyone!
Ya'll can call me Julianna, or Juju, but I forget that's my username half the time. I'm looking to read more diverse books, though I'm pretty good at it, but I'd like more Asian picks. This seemed like the perfect group to find them ?.

Some of my favorite books are A Thousand Splendid Suns, And Then There Were None, and Other Words for Home, and my go-to boba order is usually taro with normal honey boba. It's a classic, but if I choose differently, it's usually honeydew and I love lychee jellies.

Nice meeting you all!

message 65: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarsky) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Sarah and I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia. I'm a psychologist and also a mom to a 10 years old boy.

I grew up reading Mallory Towers and Agatha Christie's books in English, because I wanted to learn English. So, I rarely read books by Asian authors before. However, around 5-6 years ago, I started reading books by Keigo Higashino and I loved it. Then I read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and The Vegetarian by Han Kang and they blew my mind. So I try to read more books by Asian authors and found this group.

I also love YA books and of course boba. My favourite boba would be brown sugar milk tea.

message 66: by Jessica (new)

Jessica A | 1 comments Hi!! My name is Jessica and I love how I found this group (internally screaming)! I have been a book lover my whole life that I obtained a BA in English Literature in hopes to teach. I changed career paths and now I¡¯m working in Healthcare and currently the Education Chair for my APIDA - employee resource group. I recently started reading more works from Asian American writers including: Crying in H Mart- Michelle Zaunder and just finishing Loveboat, Taipei - Abigail Wen.

I¡¯m here to find more recommendations of Asian American titles as well as be apart of the current reads of the group. So excited to be here!

Favorite boba: It depends on my mood but my go to has to be just regular Milk-tea with boba. I¡¯m a simple gal lol Sometimes fruit teas with lychee jelly is pretty yum too!

message 67: by Garan (new)

Garan Lansangan | 2 comments Hello everyone. My name is Garan Lansangan. I am a Natural Born U.S. Citizen who happens to be Filipino-Puerto Rican. I am new to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and I have decided to join to find other Asians who are interested in Literature. I have joined Books & Boba to find Books made by Asians as well as hang out and be friends with you all. I am still new to my Mother's Culture, but I plan to learn Tagalog very soon.

I have grandiose plans as a Future Writer. I plan to write a Five Volume Manifesto titled "The Filipino That Was." It will cover the Philippine Archipelago before it was Colonized by Spain, Me as a Filipino and More. I hope that this Group is okay with Manifestos because you all seem like great people.

Anyways, thank you for reading this and have a great day. I cannot wait to hang out with you all and read awesome books by Asians.

Rae | The Finer Things Club CA (thefinerthingsclubca) | 1 comments Hello, everyone! I¡¯m Rae. I¡¯m Filipino-American and I live in Southern California. I¡¯m a creative project manager by trade, I read and review for pleasure, and I¡¯ve co-run a local book club for 12+ years now! I tend to read literary fiction, women¡¯s literature, thrillers, and memoirs but I¡¯m open to other genres. My usual boba order is passionfruit or lychee green tea, less ice, less sweet. Pleased to meet you!

message 69: by lily (new)

lily (chaesonghwa) | 1 comments hello! i¡¯m lily. i am a korean american student studying literature in brunswick, maine! i¡¯m really excited to have found this community. i really enjoy reading asian and asian american literature (particularly fiction and SFF!) and it¡¯s also the area that i¡¯m studying. i find the ways in which asian diaspora writers approach the (fictional) novel to be fascinating, and i¡¯ll actually be doing some deeper research into that this summer. fun stuff! my favorite books include the poppy war trilogy (rf kuang) and the greenbone saga (fonda lee). two really good books i read recently are peach blossom spring (melissa fu) and disorientation (elaine hsieh chou). and i can never go wrong with an earl grey or oolong milk tea with boba pearls <3 i love chatting about books and all things book-related, feel free to drop a message if you¡¯d want to be friends!

Leyla? ????? (leylaspages) | 1 comments Hi all!
(I really tried to think of an original opener, but sadly no-) well, my name is Leyla and the name probably gives away that I'm turkish. However I'm a mixed blood Dutchy tho :) I'm a Tourism Management bachelor student and while traveling home in the train I ended up in this group simply by searching for diversity, haha! I'm really interested in reading books that are less known and also gaining more interest in books by Asian authors. then not to speak about my love for boba! though, I have not tried a lot yet (only had my first 2 years ago) I can say that I would like any including strawberry flavor whether it be the popping or the drink itself. I'd love to make some friends on here so don't hesitate to send a req or message<3

message 71: by Dru (new)

Dru | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Drusilla or Dru for short. I¡¯ve been wanting to pick up books again as a way to escape the realities of grad school and work, but after a few months of habitual reading I¡¯ve actually found positive balance.

Glad to have found a community for myself to join!

message 72: by Christine (new)

Christine Ma-Kellams | 1 comments Hi!
I'm Christine. Like Lily and Jessica mentioned earlier, I also recently read Elaine Hsieh Chou's Disorientation (so unexpected as far as plotlines go and a total trip, in a good way), and Crying in HMart remains one of my all time favorites. Minor Feelings is on my to-read list, as is The Loneliest Americans.

M.J. Apple (mjapple) | 1 comments Happy Holidays!

After nearly 30 years of writing in private, I finally took the plunge and published ¡°The Real Me Because of You¡± (a steamy closed door rom-com with a Filipina-American lead).

As a teacher, my promo game was nonexistent since I couldn¡¯t afford ARC¡¯s & paid promotions/advertising. But I made a deal with both my daughter and another student that if they don¡¯t stress about college acceptance, I¡¯ll make a real effort in promoting my book. So here we are.

Maraming Salamat | Thanks in advance!

PS: While I truly like boba if prefer jelly in my Taro drinks or Halo-Halo¡ ;)

Here is my ¡°official bio¡±:

MJ Apple is a pen name. The writer and her husband have two teenage children and two puppies and raised them in various part of the US, most recently in the South. She currently teaches high school math and officiates swim meets. She advocates her children and students to embrace their talented passions of performing and visual arts and continuing to grow in their faith.

message 76: by Bels (new)

Bels | 2 comments Hi there! My name is Isabel, but feel free to call me Bels!

I¡¯ve recently reignited my love for reading; I was an avid reader as a kid but school very quickly got in the way. I¡¯m graduating university in the spring, so I¡¯m hopeful that my time to read will open up exponentially. Plus, I¡¯m an English major (Tech Writing tho, not Lit) so reading really should a bigger priority lol.

Some of my favorite books are Brave New World, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Strange Weather in Tokyo. The last book is actually what sparked me interest in API writers and has subsequently led to many API novels being added to my TBR. Since I¡¯m still getting back into reading, I¡¯m not sure how involved I can be in this group just yet, but it looks like an amazing community and I couldn¡¯t resist joining.

I also really love boba, tho I¡¯m a total baby when it comes to flavors. My go to is usually something peach flavored with traditional pearls. :)

message 78: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor (sunsplat) | 1 comments Hello everyone! I¡¯m a Chinese American from the south and never grew up with much Asian influence around me. I remember being so in love with the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan because it was the first book I ever read that I could relate to, that felt like a non-fiction.

I¡¯m not a voracious reader but am trying to get back into reading more consistently again. This year I¡¯ve decided to focus on reading more from Asian authors and just finished Green Island by Shawna Yang Ryan. Looking forward to learning about more authors and meeting more people!

message 79: by A.A. (new)

A.A. Jaeon | 2 comments Hi, everyone!

I¡¯m A. A. Jaeon (you can call me A. A. or Jaeon). I¡¯m an avid reader/audiobook listener who recently became an indie author (my Asian American contemporary romance debut novel is coming out May 18, 2023).

Some of my favorite books include the Percy Jackson series, A Taste for Love & Love Decoded by Jennifer Yen, The Jasmine Project by Meredith Ireland, and Silver Springs series by Victoria James. I don¡¯t have a favorite boba drink (lol), but I love drinking tea.

I¡¯m very excited to join a book club where there are other readers who are interested in reading/discussing novels written by API authors as well.

message 82: by Diana (new)

Diana | 1 comments Hello, I'm Diana. I'm an Asian American. I've always been a book worm, but it wasn't until these past couple years that I've really taken an interest in reading books about and by Asian authors. It's been very enlightening and comforting to learn more about my culture. It's helped me feel more ties to my culture.

Choosing a favorite is hard because it's always changing, but I'm currently favoriting Pachinko and Heaven Official's Blessing: Tian Guan Ci Fu (Novel) Vol. 1

One of my favorite asian authors is Han Kang

And ironically I really haven't had boba. Oops!

I look forward to getting to know you all!

Jasmin (chaoticstudent) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Jasmin and I study Chinese Studies at a german university. ??

I want to start reading more books from asian authors that's why I joined this group to get some examples. I will probably only start with the group book pick in december, because I already got my november books from the library and friends (which includes The Poppy War, btw).

I don't really know what genre I like, because I just read what sounds interesting to me. But I'm a big Harry Potter fan, so I love to re-read the books and read all kind of fanfictions (mostly about Draco tho ?).

My go-to Ä̲è is brown sugar milk tea with boba and 100% sugar, ups ?

If you have the same interests it would be nice to be friends and exchange views with each other.
