Hi, folks! This is an introduction thread where new members can say hello, share what they hope to get out of the book club, and mention some of their favorite books (and boba drinks).

I'll go first... Hi, I'm Reera! I'm one of the co-hosts for Books & Boba. Some of my favorite books are Howl's Moving Castle, Rebecca, and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. My go-to boba is a taro milk tea (ironically, with no boba).

I'm very excited to be a part of this book club because I didn't grow up reading many novels written by authors of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. Now that I'm older, I'm amazed to see all these talented API writers breaking into the publishing industry and making a name for themselves. I hope that this book club will encourage people to read more and introduce them to some diverse stories by API authors.

message 2: by Lauren (last edited Sep 17, 2016 10:14PM) (new)

Lauren | 112 comments Well, since no one else has posted on this thread yet, I might as well help get it going.

My name is Lauren and... ironically, not only am I an adamant reader, but I'm also an author. I released A Moment's Worth (which is my debut novel) a little over two years ago, and I'm preparing to release my second novel in a few months.

As a reader, a few of my favorite books include The Whale Rider, A Tale for the Time Being, and Cloud Atlas (and yes, technically two out of these three books I named are also on the suggestion list for future books to read). Thai iced tea, taro milk tea, and coconut milk tea are probably my top three favorite boba drinks.

Amy Tan was not only a passenger on my dad's flight the other week (no, I'm not making that up), but also the only Asian American author that would come to mind growing up. While I can name many more Asian American authors (and some of their various works) now, I hope that through this book club, I'll expand my horizons and learn even more authors and books.

It will mean a lot to me in the long run, especially as someone who grew up with little to no knowledge about my Filipino heritage. Now that I'm at a point in my life where I can identify as a mixed race Asian American/Hapa author, I hope to come across a wide array of works from people of similar backgrounds in due time.

yiming | 21 comments Hello, my name is yiming ("e-ming") and I am excited I came across this group! It feels like a big commitment to call something a favorite, but some books I've read that have really stuck with me are: Huntress, Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope, The Man with the Compound Eyes, The Garden of Evening Mists, Kindling, and The Ghost Bride. Two children¡¯s books I really like are The Giving Tree and The Red Piano. My favorite types of milk tea are: taro, Thai tea, black milk tea, or a peanut butter smoothie w boba. I really like grass jelly and lychee jelly, probably more than boba itself :)

Like Lauren, Amy Tan was also one of very few Asian / Asian American authors I read growing up. Maxine Hong Kingston¡¯s The Woman Warrior influenced me a lot as well. Through this book group, I¡¯m hoping to connect with others who also are excited about reading (and discussing) Asian American lit with other Asian Americans. I enjoy reading to explore and learn more about myself as a queer, disabled/chronically ill mixed-race Chinese-Irish/white USian ("American") woman. I am hoping to reading more stories related to Malaysia or Singapore (my mom is Chinese Malaysia), Taiwan (I studied there for a year in college), as well as other places with associated with the Chinese diaspora. And I also look forward to learning more about other Asian cultures that I'm not as familiar with. Thanks for creating this group, Reera and Marvin!

Marvin Yueh | 47 comments Mod
Hello everyone! I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Marvin Yueh, I'm Reera's co-host on the Books & Boba podcast and the producer/editor. I co-founded this club along with Reera to give me an excuse to read books again.

I grew up reading a lot of Michael Crichton and Star Wars Expanded Universe novels. Recently, in addition to the Books & Boba picks, I've read Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt and am working through Dungeon World for a new podcast concept I'm pre-producing.

I have a lot of hopes for the book club, but mainly is to read more from diverse voices that I resonate with, discover new favorite authors creating awesome works, and to spread the word that Asian Americans write cool stuff!

message 5: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Meng (resareviews) | 30 comments Hi! I just stumbled onto the podcast recently and love the chance to read/discuss Asian-American reads with fellow book enthusiasts.

I grew up reading whatever book was in the library (so hardly any Asian-American novels except Red Scarf Girl) and a lot of Garfield comics.

Recently, I loved "Reading with Patrick" by Michelle Kuo. So excited that there has been more book buzz from Asian authors from "Exit West", "Sour Heart" and "Goodbye Vitamin".

message 6: by Brian (new)

Brian Webb (brianqwebb) | 3 comments My name is Brian and, by day, I'm an Elementary-level homeroom teacher a municipal school in Taipei. I moved from Los Angeles to Taipei in 1998 and have been living here since, literally half of my life. So...wait...that makes me American-Asian, not Asian-American...hope that I still qualify to be a part of this group. :-)

By night, I'm a voracious reader of science fiction, especially more "science-y" sci-fi like Crichton and Suarez. I'm currently reading Change Agent by the latter. In terms of science fiction and Asian authors, I'm a huge fan of Liu Cixin's The Three Body Problem and have his follow-up, The Dark Forest, queued up on my kindle as my next read. Earlier this year, I also took a stab at writing my own science-y scifi adventure and, so far, the reviews are largely positive. The main protagonist is a Taiwanese immigrant to the U.S.. Even those that aren't family or my mom's friends.

Which shocks the heck out of me.

My mom's best friend, an immigrant from H.K. to Los Angeles, did scold me about using pinyin instead of phonetics for the protagonists's Mandarin, though. I had to explain to her how they are kind of one in the same in my brain.

But I digress.

This is my initial effort, free if you're sub'd to KU: _Shift: A thriller of multiple dimensions.

Thanks!

Nicola ? (violetsugarheart) | 17 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Nicola & I just discovered the podcast (starting with the episode on The Devotion of Suspect X as I loved the book). I'm a final year Japanese Studies undergraduate, writing my thesis on Japanese literature, but I'm also really interested in Korean & Chinese literature as well as literature by authors of Asian descent. I'm always trying to learn about political & social issues surrounding books, so I feel like this group has a lot to say on that. I'm hoping to learn about new books from the podcast/group, & I also want to regain my love of reading for pleasure (it feels like I'm always swamped in research books but I don't make enough time to read novels). My favourite flavour of boba is taro, although I also love the rose milk flavour they do at a shop in Chinatown - it tastes like turkish delight! :)

Erika (erikakcarlson) | 3 comments Hi! I've been lurking for several months but now that I've finally read the right book in the right month I thought I'd introduce myself and maybe participate in discussion a bit.

My name is Erika, and I'm currently a grad student studying astronomy at UW-Madison. Before moving to Wisconsin, I grew up (mostly) in Northern California and went to college in Southern California, where I *almost minored* in Asian American Studies. One of my favorite AsAm studies courses I took was a literature course on books by Japanese and Japanese American women writers, which was excellent.

Some of my favorite books that have already been mentioned are Howl's Moving Castle and A Tale for the Time Being. Other favorites include the His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, etc.) and A Wrinkle in Time from my childhood, and One Hundred Years of Solitude and many things by Octavia E. Butler, more recently. My go-to boba drink is usually the classic black milk tea (with boba pearls) and variations of that, like royal milk tea and rose milk tea.

This year, I've been trying to read for pleasure more and specifically read more books by Asian American authors, so this podcast has been a great way for me to learn about upcoming and recently released books by Asian American/Asian diaspora writers. Thank you for doing this podcast and book club, Reera and Marvin!

Yay, another fan of rose milk tea :D also the course you did on Japanese American women writers sounds really interesting! I'm thinking of writing my MA thesis on Japanese American & Korean American fiction :)

David (daejin) | 15 comments Long time lurker I figure I'd better introduce myself. 2nd gen Korean-Canadian and lifetime voracious reader from way back. I'm of the generation where Amy Tan was a revelation, not used to seeing Asian voices in fiction.

Now there's just so much fantastic stuff from Asian-American writers out there. Loved Pachinko, Goodbye Vitamin, Little Fires Everywhere, The Wangs vs the World, The Paper Menagerie, Shelter, Private Citizens and so much more. I've reviewed all of these over on my (Booktube - what a mind-blowing concept too!) Actually Booktube has diversified my reading and made me consider more carefully what I consume so that it's not just middle-aged white guys. Appreciate the podcast to keep me up to date on API reads and looking forward to discovering more here.

message 11: by Danielle (new)

Danielle T (daumari) | 15 comments Hi, I'm Danielle! I've been in the group for a few months so uh... kind of belated on the introductory post, whoops. 3rd or 4th gen ABC depending on which side of my family you're looking at, so the Lawrence Yep books were pretty relevant growing up (of his Golden Mountain chronicles, The Traitor is my favorite, as it reminds me of the prevalence of chinatowns throughout the intermountain west before they were driven out). I'm a lifelong reader who's consistently done local library summer reading programs since preschool! I grew up in a predominantly white small city, so media and the internet are often where I go to to find other AsAm experiences. I see Amy Tan mentioned a couple times upthread, but to me that was always my mother's generation- I related a lot more to Kim Wong Keltner's The Dim Sum of All Things. I also remember being really impressed by Shug by Jenny Han as a book by an Asian American that didn't necessarily have an Asian American as a protagonist.

My favorite series, warts and all is Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time, and I tend to read either nonfiction or fantasy. Brandon Sanderson is a current fave author, and his The Emperor's Soul novella is a lovely short take on the meaning of art with seals/stamps as a means of magic, and was inspired by his LDS mission time in Korea.

Alas, I was late to the boba thing (didn't encounter it until college), so I don't really have a fave? I tend to go thai iced tea with regular boba

TBH I kind of skip the book of the month episodes of the pod because my to-read pile is horrendously long, but I am thrilled to find other diaspora Asians to talk books with~!

Cyan Night (cyannight) Hi, I am Cyan Night, author of is a novel about mixed martial arts (MMA) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Girl Fighter in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ

I am born and raised in Asia, but more importantly, the protagonist of my book is a bizarre mix of Chinese-Mongols-Kazakh, but born and raised in Australia. Aside from issues pertaining to women in sport and other male dominant industries, the book also raises issues of how some minority race is marginalised in very subtle ways. It was very important for me to have a character that defies all clich¨¦s of Asians, in particular, Asian women. Like many of you here, I love fiction but there is a lack of variety in voices of different heritage.

Mindy Kaling is one of my favourite Asian American artist.

Edwin Peng (edwinpeng88) | 2 comments Hello everyone! Or, as the space aliens in my Star City series would say, u a zuk!

I'm 2nd Generation Chinese American born and raised in Monterey Park, CA. Currently, I'm chilling (literally, as it's frigging cold right now) in Nebraska, working as a postdoc researcher at my dayjob while writing at night.

My debut YA/Sci-Fi novel, Star City, was published last December. It's about space aliens who love blueberry pies and teenagers who want to succeed in STEM fields. I'm hosting a giveaway right now, so if you want the chance to win, please enter by February 14.

Star City is the first book in the series of the same name. Book 2, Friendship Village, will be released at the end of this year. It features a brand new set of main characters, including Tiffany Jackson-Li, a Chinese American teen struggling with the post-first contact life in Southern California.

Anyway...it is nice to find this group and happy reading and writing to everyone!

message 15: by jas (new)

jas (silkquake) | 5 comments Hey all! I've been listening to the podcast for almost a full year now so I figured I should get on the forums haha.

I'm Jas, a Chinese Canadian marine biology undergraduate student, originally from the Greater Toronto Area, I'm currently living in Nova Scotia for school. I'm nonbinary so I go by they/them pronouns! My go-to boba drink is a roasted milk tea with boba and less ice and sugar.

I grew up reading (and rereading) books like Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson and Warrior Cats. I can't really recall any Asian/Asian American authors growing up but for the past few years, I've been intentionally reading books by non-white or non-cishet authors (preferably both) and it's been such an amazing experience realizing I didn't have to settle for reading a lot of generic white & straight books. I tend to stick to YA & children's novels and/or SFF because I find them more compelling but it's a very soft rule. It's been a delight seeing how many more AsAm (and non-cishet!) authors in the mainstream YA industry there are compared to when I was in high school (which wasn't even that long ago). I'm young enough that I've never read a Amy Tan book.

Choosing favourite books or authors is what I imagine choosing a favourite child would feel like but I have to spotlight Malinda Lo for being the first queer AsAm author I ever read and for writing the kinds of books I never thought were possible. CB Lee and JY Yang are also incredible. Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket and Rick Riordan still remain among my favourite authors from childhood.

More often than not, I don't keep up with the book-of-the-month eps because between having to borrow the book from the library (I'm on a student budget after all) and finding time to read it, I am rarely on top of things but I do go back and listen episodes once I do read them!

message 17: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Hello everyone! My name is Alice Poon and I am a Hong Kong-born Chinese-Canadian. I grew up devouring Jin Yong's (aka Louis Cha) wuxia (martial arts & chivalry) novels. Those novels sparked my life-long interest in Chinese history. In my adulthood I've been an avid reader of world historical novels that are well researched, because I would like to learn history through novels. Classics is another of my favorite genres. In the course of my reading I've found that the historical fiction genre is heavily tilted towards European history, and is lacking in the area of Chinese history.

My long-cherished dream has been to write historical novels related to real Chinese historical characters.

My newly released historical novel The Green Phoenix: A Novel of the Woman Who Re-Made Asia, Empress Xiaozhuang is about the dramatic life story of a pivotal, but underappreciated, Chinese female leader from the early Qing dynasty. Much of the novel is based on historical facts.

Rebekah Roberts | 2 comments Hello! My name is Rebekah, I¡¯m a library assistant from Oklahoma and I¡¯m studying Korean and Asian Cultural Studies.
I found Books and Boba through the ¡°Potluck¡± group, by way of the Korean Drama Podcast with Will Choi. (A very entertaining podcast, that I highly recommend.)
I came to learn more about Asian and Asian American culture, to help round out my understanding of what I¡¯m studying in school. But now that I¡¯m here, I¡¯m enjoying the fun of the B&B podcast and the books we are learning about.

My favorite boba is Rose Milk, black tea, with Boba.

My favorite books (to name a few), Hunger Games series, The Help, Rebecca, Project Mulberry, Talking As Fast as I Can, Persuasion, and the Body in the Library. My favorite book from the B&B podcast so far has been, Heroine Complex.

All my books (4 so far, 2 of them have garnered some awesome awards) are set in Japan or have Japanese protagonists. I'm keen on showing readers the Japanese culture without them knowing they're being educated. Foremost, I want them to be entertained.

I love every kind of book but especially mysteries and children's. I look forward to hearing what kind of books everyone is reading and what they think.

Hey everyone! My name is Nandini Bharadwaj and I'm from Bangalore, India. I recently discovered this podcast around a month ago and have since caught up with all the non-monthly book pick discussion episodes. I love the intent and content of the podcast, so huge thanks to Reera and Marvin for that!

I've always been an avid reader and from January 2017 I've been talking about it on my blog, , to share with the world. From 2019, I'm shifting the focus of my blog a bit to widely feature content by people of colour and mostly Asian voices. My comfort zone is fantasy and science fiction, mostly for young adults. My all-time favourite is The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien.

I'm going to be reading along to the book club's pick from January 2019. I hope that it will take me out of my comfort zone and introduce me to many more wonderful Asian authors.

message 23: by Nina (new)

Nina (purplelalaland) | 23 comments Hello! My name is Nina. In exploring what to do with my post-college life, I came across Emma Watson's feminist book club (Ou Shared Shelf). When reading all of the incredible voices in that book club, I realized that I was missing the Asian American voice. What role do Asian Americans play in building the kind of America that works for us and everyone else too. Therefore, like many others, I found myself very excited when I found this book club.

I'm hoping to get a better understanding of our world and the different perspectives that come out of it. I often get a lot more value from a book from discussion rather than just moving on to the next read.

I don't have any favorite book recommendations, but am completely obsessed with brown sugar boba right now. With pudding, not boba.

message 24: by Pati (new)

Pati | 1 comments Hi, I¡¯m Pati. New to GoodReads, Books and Boba, and the concept of reading regularly.

Like many of you, I used to read whatever I could get my hands on as a child, but that slowed down significantly when I realized I wanted to see myself in these stories, but the protagonist were very rarely Asian-American or from mixed cultures.

A lot has changed in 20 years. I started looking up Asian and Asian-American authors in the last year or so, which brought me to this group! It¡¯ll take me a while, but I¡¯m excited to catch up on all the stories and podcast episodes. Thanks for bringing it all together!

I¡¯m a graphic designer now, and I loooooove judging a book by its cover design.

Amy Chang | 1 comments Hi! New to all of this. Born and bred Chicagoan here. I was not exposed to many books written by Asian/Asian-Am authors as a 2nd gen, and, as an Asian-American, am happy to read the familiar kinds of voices as well as explore others.

I have lately been reading a lot of Haruki Marukami (loved Colorless Tsukuru), I also enjoyed The Poppy War (R.F. Kuang) and haven't yet made it through Grace of Kings. :D I also loved Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang. Oh, I could go on and on...

I love boba. HK milk coffee-tea would be my favorite.

Lori T. Lee | 1 comments Hello. Thank you for accepting my request to join this group. My name is Lori Lee. I¡¯m a Queens writer interested in understanding what it means to be an Asian-American writer in the 21st century. As a child of the 80s & 90s, Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston were my long-standing and sole role models. Now that times have changed, and ethnic literature has changed, I¡¯m embarking on a new reading adventure. One that I hope will lead me to the minds of the newer generation of AAPI writers and maybe to a tall delicious cup of Kung Fu black-tea-no milk-no-sugar boba, too. I¡¯m currently reading The Hanging on Union Square by H. T. Tsiang. I¡¯m looking forward to hearing your suggestions on where to go next.

Katie (katieeripshipp) | 1 comments Hello!

I just got back into reading recently after taking several years "off" from it due to school- nursing school took up all of my time, and the last thing I wanted to do was read after reading and studying my textbooks! I saw Crazy Rich Asians when it came out and read the book a few weeks ago, and reading it made me want to explore more authors and characters who come from Asian heritage. I'm excited to see what books are out there within this subject area! I typically read contemporary books, but I am hoping to expand my reading preferences.

I'm actually not a big fan of boba, but I love to drink oolong and green tea!

°ä±ô¨¤³Ü»å¾±²¹ (nananyawn) Hello everybody and nice meeting you all! :-)

My name is °ä±ô¨¤³Ü»å¾±²¹, and I'm a true Mediterranean soul born and raised in Barcelona, Spain. I came across Books and Boba almost a year ago, as I was looking for book-related podcast to listen to. I'm an East Asia Studies & International Relations graduate, and I'm fascinated by anything related to mobility, transnationality and diaspora. I also co-organize a monthly bookclub with some friends and Instagram mutuals, and soon we will be commenting Celeste Ng's "Everything I Never Told You".

Lastly, my go-to boba is either taro milk tea (with oatmilk or soymilk... I can't tolerate cow!) or tea-based mango boba. With tapioca, always. And oh, in October I will be visiting the US for the second time! (Indy & NYC)

Claudine | 2 comments Hi, Claudine here. I've been reading quite a bit of nonfiction and fiction in the diversity, equity and inclusion space. I love the "classics", as well as mystery/suspense, supernatural/paranormal fiction, historical fiction, and literary fiction by people of color. The last two recent reads include There There and An American Marriage. I'm now on a journey of reading more API authors, specifically about the Filipino American experience, and currently reading America Is Not the Heart. Admittedly, I am not a fan of boba; however, I do love jasmine pearls and darjeeling teas. I look forward to being a part of and learning from this online community.

My two votes for best boba drinks are avocado smoothies with boba or rooibos milk tea with boba.

Warm wishes to everyone and happy reading!

Judy | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Judy and I live in Los Angeles. I was born in Taiwan but raised in Southern California, first in San Gabriel Valley in a very diverse elementary school with lots of Asian kids among other ethnicities, and then in a part of Orange County where I still had Asian classmates but WASPy surf culture was king. It wasn¡¯t until I took an Asian American culture and literature class in college that I embraced my Asian Americanness. Even then, it¡¯s only been very recently in my adult life that I¡¯ve started to explore my own family history in Taiwan, particularly what life was like for my grandparents and parents and uncles and aunts as they lived through martial law in Taiwan.

That said, one of the Asian American novels that really hit home for me in recent years is Green Island by Shawna Yang Ryan. Through her novel, I learned more about the 2/28 massacre and White Terror than my family had ever talked about, and being someone who struggles to read non-fiction, this novel was a nice gateway for me to dive deeper in Taiwanese history and anthropology. However, my favorite novel set in Asia is The Orphan Master¡¯s Son by Adam Johnson - I was so enthralled by this masterpiece of a story that I read it twice in a row on a single trans-Pacific flight.

My favorite boba drink is a tossup between a classic milk tea with boba, or cream cheese foam milk tea with boba. Cheese foam tea sounded disgusting to me when I first heard about it but instantly became like crack to me!

Looking forward to ¡°talking¡± with everyone!

My name is Freja and I'm originally from Denmark - currently living in Gwangju, South Korea though.

I always read a lot as a child but due to pressure and stress from school in high school, I gradually stopped reading for my own enjoyment. This has continued on and here we are, 2020 and I'm now 24 years old. I'd like to pick up reading again, so that's why I decided to sign up and also join his group! :-). I hope I'll succeed and not just forget my promise in a few days hahah.

My favourite boba are the fruity ones. It's basic but I love it hhaha. Especially kiwi! ^^

I will actually be moving to Providence, Rhode Island to go to university for a Bachelors in Culinary Arts and Food & Beverage Industry Management. I decided to go to Culinary school because of the Asian food cuisine, and now, three years later, I want to start reading more books by API authors. I enjoy fantasy novels, contemporary, Manga, and I am actually in a Japanese book club as well, and I joined a Korean as well. I am trying to explore the world through the work of books, and so far it is fun!!

Some of my favorite books are Milk and Honey/The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur, the Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson, and all of Cassandra Clare's books. Cassandra Clare and James Patterson are literally the reason I read now, so I owe them a HUGE thanks, haha. I am always open to suggestions as well, so let me know if you recommend any books.

My favorite Boba is probably classic Milk Tea, Taro Milk Tea, or Coffee Milk Tea. I haven't had Boba too much as the only shop around me right now is literally in a mall an hour away from my house, haha.

I hope we can all get along and talk about books!!

Cristina | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I stumbled across this group when looking to reignite my passion for reading and because I loveeee boba tea. I always loved reading and it was my hobby during elementary/middle school. Then life and responsibilities came so now at 30 years old looking to pick up my hobby again that I had put aside and read new books.

My favorite boba drink .... I have too many tbh, but my 3 favorites are Seafoam Viet Coffee, Strawberry Black tea and Chai Milk Tea! ?

Thanks for creating this group and I hope everyone stays safe from COVID-19!

Chris | 2 comments Hello. I recently started listening to the Books & Boba podcast, thanks to Ms. Rona. Also, my friends have been trying to get me on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, so when I heard that Books & Boba is on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, I thought, why not join the group? I hope to get introduced to exciting books and new Asian authors.

Authors: Currently finishing up Edinburgh by Alexander Chee. It's wonderful, and so is How to Write an Autobiographical Novel. Also just finished Real Life by Brandon Taylor. I recommend it! I also enjoy the short stories of Jhumpa Lahiri and Carmen Maria Machado.

Favorite boba: Blueberry green tea with aloe jelly.

Liz | 1 comments Hello lovely people!
My name is Liz and I am a bilingual Korean American middle aged empty nester. I've been reading less with my new job, so I want to make it a priority again. Currently reading Lisa See's Island of Sea Women, John Krakauer's Into Thin Air and been meaning to start Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere.
Happy reading~

Crystal | 12 comments Hi. My name is Crystal. I'm a white middle aged woman. My ancestors were mostly German. I thought I already posted, but maybe I just drafted it in my mind. Mango boba is what I typically gravitate toward. I also like the Japanese Royal Milk Tea that I had almost every day when I was in Japan to visit our exchange student. I love reading and generally read more than 100 novels a year. Since I'm a children's librarian, I read way more picture books than that. I read a wide variety of books and was excited to find one more way to find out about good books. I love any excuse to read and this is a nice way to learn about books for adults.

Brandon Hyman | 1 comments Hi! I¡¯m Brandon and I found this group through the podcast. I stumbled upon the podcast after reading Severance and looking everyone to find someone to discuss it with. Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast and listened to another episode on a book I had already read (Convenience Store Woman).

This year I wanted to broaden the scope of books I read: authors of a wider variety of races, countries, and genders; genres so might not normally read; longer books; shorter books, etc, and so hope this group can help identify some books that I¡¯d enjoy but might not have ever heard of or come across before.

Favorite boba: most types of unsweetened oolong OR taro

Amber Revolt-May | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Amber and I just started binge listening to the podcast. I heard about the Books and Boba podcast on the All the Asians on Star Trek podcast. I like silence fiction and fantasy books and I read multiple books at a time. I am looking forward to reading more books! Oh, I nearly forgot, my favorite drink is Chai tea with milk or hot apple cider.

Stephanie Nguyen (stxnguyen) | 1 comments Hello everyone, long time member of the group but first time posting. My name is Stephanie and currently a graduate student studying higher education. When I'm not reading for my dissertation, I read a lot of Asian and Asian American literature for fun. Definitely enjoy this community who shares my love for books. My favorite boba tea is between Taro and Thai Milk Tea.

Gary | 2 comments Hello! I am a Taiwanese-American from Tennesee. I have been an avid reader for a long time and as more and more API and APIA writers have churned out novels, I've gravitated toward them. I'm late into the podcast world, but I'm glad to have found this community!

My favorite bubble tea would probably have to be a nice iced Jasmine Green Tea without any boba or milk.

Ada (read_by_ada) | 3 comments Hi. I just recently joined the group since books and boba are two of my favorite things so it just seems like a no brainer to join. So far I like seeing what other members are reading and finding new books to read. My favorite book is Vicious by V.E. Schwab, but I am always up for finding new favorites. My go-to boba drink is either avocado with boba, or jasmine milk tea with rainbow jelly - just depends on my mood really.
