Cassandra | 5832 comments It's that time--we are going to start preparing for 2017.

To answer some questions:
- Yes, the group will continue into 2017!
- Yes, we will archive all of your 2016 challenges and corners so you don't lose your info!
- Yes, we will have a bunch of new yearly challenges for you!

We are super excited and hope you are too. You'll notice that the group name just changed to reflect that it'll continue on next year. Please post any questions you may have about the transition here.

Here's a high level schedule:

Late November/Early December:
- Start posting yearly challenges (these will be posted one at a time over the span of a week or two to give everyone a chance to read through them)
- Create the new folders for personal challenges and member corners
- 2017 themes posted
- Post January challenges
- Post Q1 challenges

First week in January:
- Change group name
- Archive 2016 threads

Cassandra | 5832 comments Our nonfiction challenge this year is Dewey Decimal

message 5: by Nick (new)

Nick Green (nickppgreen2014) I think my main challenge will be reading most of the books I bought from 2016 in the first quarter of 2017.

message 6: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I did that last year! I'll admit that I wasn't super successful, but I tried to do a whole year of reading books I'd already purchased.

If you try for a quarter, you can keep telling yourself that you'll read the books that aren't part of your 2016 haul later in the year. Good luck!

I think you did well! There is lots of temptations out there in books and at least you probably read more than you bought. I did the opposite lol.

I'm trying that now to read more than buying :)

message 8: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Listopia is back for another year!

message 9: by Blagica , Challenges (new)

Blagica | 12855 comments I put this in the mod corner but I am going to put it here just to try and make it easier on you girls. do you all know how many yearly challenges there will be this year? I made a mess of my corner last year hard to admit being as OCD as I am I'd like to try and be as neat as possible this year. thanks

message 10: by Cassandra (last edited Nov 30, 2016 09:59AM) (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I responded in the thread you asked the question, but copying and pasting here. :)

Usually we aim for around 10 yearly challenges - it may end up being 9-12, but in that range for sure!

As a tip, you can hold a bunch of posts in your topic (more than you need), and then if you end up not needing them, you can delete the extra posts.

message 11: by Blagica , Challenges (new)

Blagica | 12855 comments sorry hon didn't see it and thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

message 12: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments No problem! Hope that helps you organize. :)

Personally, I already had to scoot things around my corner since I decided to Listopia, which I didn't have in my original "plan". It just proves how hard it is to decide which ones to do, even when I have the inside scoop!

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I'm so excited for 2017! We have our Yearly Theme of Around the World!

Cassandra | 5832 comments In honor of our theme, today's posted yearly challenge is Around the World Through Language

Mie | 2148 comments Even if English is not my first language, I don't suppose that Irish, Canadian, American and British counts as 4 languages, do they? ;-)

I posted it in the yearly challenges!

message 19: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureencean) | 57 comments Do you think there will be a random challenge this year? I am new and I don't know whether to set up under a personal challenge or wait for random to show up since that is what I am going to do. Thank you!

message 20: by Tim (new)

Tim Smith My goal is to reduce the amount of unread books that I have on my Nook, Kindle and the ones I've bought at thrift stores. I know I won't be able to get them completely down since I've been downloading free books on about a daily basis.

Oh man, you could be my twin! For me it is two kindles though. That's beauty of the random challenge. Whatever comes up, you have to read!!

message 22: by Mie (new)

Mie | 2148 comments I am so excited about the yearly challenges, that I have entered and can't wait to get started!!!
And as I am hoping to combine them with some monthly and/or quarterly challenges, I am really curious as to what you come up with.

I know, that you are probably already busy preparing them :-) so just letting you know, that I look forward to it!

message 26: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments It won't be coming back as a yearly challenge, but look for it as a Challenge later in the year.

message 27: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Coleman | 13 comments I want to do the challenge that I read the books from my want to read 2016 shelf ...

message 28: by Ilona (last edited Dec 07, 2016 05:09AM) (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments Hi Stacy, how about the TBR randomiser challenge 2017? You can randomly pick a number of books from your TBR 2016 shelf and read them :)

message 29: by Mary (new)

Mary Lewandowski Very new to this. How do I sign up for a 2017 challenge and where do I find out about the different challenges?

message 30: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hi Mary! Welcome.

We have 2017 yearly challenges posted, which you can sign up for now if any of them look interesting to you.

We also have quarterly challenges and monthly challenges, which are ongoing for the 4th quarter and December. In late December, we'll post the 1st quarter challenges and January challenges in the same folders.

Does that help?

Gem | 214 comments Okay, what happened to the Reporter Challenge? It was there, then poof, now it's gone, lol.

The person who posted it meant to post it in another group they are a part of so the mods moved it to archived/deleted it since it wasn't an official challenge for this group.

Gem | 214 comments Ah, thank you!

message 34: by Ashly (new)

Ashly (ashlyh) | 287 comments Is there going to be a A-Z Character Challenge for 2017?

message 35: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments Not this year. While we love the A to Z challenges, we have done them several years in a row, and have not been able to come up with a new twist on it for this year. If anyone has an idea, I would be more than happy to present it to the mods.

Things that have been done: Book Titles, Authors, Character Names

message 36: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Thanks Brianna for answering Gem's question! I did post a comment in that thread - she belongs to The Challenge Factory, so if you're super psyched for that challenge you can find it there. :)

I saw it right after it was posted and then hours later it was gone. No, not super psyched, just confused... it doesn't take much, lol.

message 38: by Debra (new)

Debra Hi is there going to be an I-Spy Challenge this year? I've enjoyed it this year. It's been my first challenge and now I've got the challenge bug. Thank you

message 39: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments There won't be an I-Spy Challenge this year, but we have the My Favorite Things Challenge that has an I-Spy feel about it. You should check it out.

message 40: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Hey, mods! Just curious, are all the yearly challenges posted? Also, when will the quarterly and monthly challenges be posted? Thanks for all your hard work!

message 41: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments We aim to post the quarterly and monthly challenges around the 25th of each month.

Now that Book Riot is up, all of the yearly challenges have been posted. :)

message 42: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Follow up question to Megan's:
How many quarterly and monthly challenges do you usually do? Just asking to make sure my corner is organized appropriately :)

message 43: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments We try and post 2 quarterly and monthly challenges. Last year we were also able to throw in a few one day challenge in as well.

For all of new members, you should receive a Welcome message that will direct you through our group, but if you don't, please go to this thread: New Members, Start Here.

message 47: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Kolle Hi! I am new to this group. I have a few questions about the book assigned for the month. Will there be assigned reading and questions to answer and discuss or is just read at your own pace and just post what you liked or didnt like? I will try to join in on different threads as much as i can. Please let me know, so i know what the requirements are. Thank you.

message 48: by Nik (new)

Nik (bleepnik) | 852 comments 2016 fizzled out for me in March, which is kind of sad. Really looking forward to doing better in 2017!! \o/

Taylor C | 454 comments Cassandra wrote: "In fact, the TBR Randomizer challenge is live now. :)"

Has there been a challenge mentioned yet to where physical book copies trump over kindles, nooks etc? I've noticed many people in forums (especially this one), and people I personally talk to wish they would have spend 2016 reading books they already own on their personal bookshelves versus buying new books or continuing to download items onto their devices. It's something I want to do with my thrift store books I'm not personally attached to. That way I can make more room on my shelf, AND I can donate them to Little Free Library when I'm done. :) (Which I know was a challenge for the groups anniversary but I didn't donate as many as I wanted to).

I know that's something you spent your time doing, Cassandra. :)
So I was wondering if it's already a challenge but I just haven't seen it yet. If not, I can mention it on the Challenge Ideas page. Thanks!

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hi everyone!

The widget comes from ŷ the site, and is usually available on January 1st. For those of you in other countries, I think ŷ time is Pacific Standard Time.

Cindy, for group reads we post discussion topics where you can discuss parts of the book. There isn't a formal discussion schedule or questions list, but sometimes the monthly group read leader will ask some questions to get discussion moving. Read at your own pace and comment when you can! :)

Nik, I know the feeling. All things considered, I did okay on reading this year, but I failed most of my challenges and my goal. I'm excited for a clean slate! Best of luck in 2017. :)
