Zaz | 2969 comments With the never ending TBR, it's difficult to read all the planned books, so with this category you can finally pick a poor book left aside.
For those reading in order: Jan 16 - Jan 22, 2017.

No suggestion, check your shelves.
To discuss the book, don't forget to add it in the A-Z folders or join the existing discussion. Please, don't discuss the book here.

Jacquie (jackieflipflop) | 4 comments What are you reading this week?
A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy
What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I am interested in what Dylan Klebold's mother has to say and can't imagine what she and her family went through and I'm sure will be going through the rest of their lives.
I couldn't get it from my local (online) library due to how many people had holds - including me. It suddenly popped up in my queue on December 31st.
Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
Chaos by Patricia Cornwell. I love Kay Scarpetta & Pete Marino. I have really fallen off of reading the series since imho the stories and characters have lost their sparkle. I still have it on my list and am hoping for a revival of the strong spirits I loved in the first novel of the series.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments What are you reading this week?
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey.

What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
It was one of those books that everyone was raving about in 2015. I had it slotted in for AtY 2016, but I was reading in order last year and just didn't get to it.

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
War and Peace. Yet again. I did open it in 2015, or maybe it was 2014 ... in any case, I'm determined that 2017 is its year!

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesbee) What are you reading this week?
Furiously Happy A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I read Jenny Lawson's first book, Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir and I love love LOVED it. So I was excited to see another one was coming out. I lost most (if not all) of my reading motivation for the last of 2015 and most of 2016 and so I started several books this past year, reading half a page and then setting them down and never picking them back up. Now that I have my motivation back and it's not slowing down, I am looking forward to reading this!

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
A few others I tried to pick up but lacked the motivation to actually read were the 2nd and 3rd books after Daughter of Smoke & Bone. I will be reading both of those for other prompts in this challenge! :)

message 6: by Ann (new)

Ann (engel-ish) I'm reading The Orphan Mother by Robert Hicks

My mom recommended this one, and it was on my holds list at the library for quite awhile before it came in.

I had put several books on the hold list and they all came in at the same time after several weeks, so I'll be reading those next.

Valerie | 382 comments - What are you reading this week?
I am reading The Care and Management of Lies byJacqueline Winspear.

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I picked it because Jacqueline Winspear is one of my favorite authors. I so enjoy reading her Maisie Dobbs series. Also, I had heard Jacqueline speak at the University of Arizona's book fair a couple of years ago about this book. It intrigued me how she used an old book she found at a boot sale as the impetus for writing this book. I didn't read it, because it wasn't a Maisie Dobbs...I knew that but still...

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?

Many some were on my reading list for this group even, but I started to run out of time, because I didn't read for a few weeks in the summer and I was reading other books, too. So I was able to substitute other books for those I planned to read in order to meet my challenge. I was able to put most of them into my group challenge for this year, however. Some of them were The Thirteenth Tale, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, The Handmaid's Tale, and others.

Cheryl H. - What are you reading this week? I am reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik.

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I had read about it earlier in 2016 but forgot to put it on my TBR list until late in December.

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I picked it up several times to start it, but got sidetracked each time. I'll be reading it this year for 18: a really long book.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments - What are you reading this week?
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I wanted to read this book after it was nominated in the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Choice Awards for 2015. I waited the whole year for a deal on it and was finally able to buy the audiobook for next to nothing at the end of the year, so it was an easy choice for my first audiobook of 2017 ;)

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
There are a few, like The Emperor's Blades or Sabriel.

Daleen (daleentree) | 24 comments - What are you reading this week?
Winter by Marissa Meyer

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
Since it was released at the end of 2015, it was on my radar for 2016. However, after finishing Cress and not enjoying it, I decided not to continue with the series. It wasn't until I hesitantly read Fariest that I decided to finish the series.

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments - What are you reading this week?
Any Day Now by Terry Bisson

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I picked it up a few months ago for dirt cheap at the Hasting's closeout sale. I have read one other book by Bisson, which I really enjoyed, so I thought I might like this one. I meant to read it but I ran out of time. I listed it as my #1 choice on another 2017 challenge (12+4 pre-determined books) to make sure I read it this year!

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
So many! A few include Middlesex, The Goldfinch, and The Pillars of the Earth

Anna Spivey (ajspivey) This week, I am reading Wildflower by Alecia Whitaker. I bought it at a book fair a few months ago because it looked interesting, but because of my overextending reading list, I haven't gotten around to it until now. There were a lot of books I had to choose from for this, including The Selection by Kiera Cass and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, which are both books for my reading challenge this year.

I'm currently reading The Name of the Wind and though it took me awhile to get into the story and grasp the world, I'm really enjoying it now. I'm trying to tackle intimidating books this year and once things pick up it carries you along.

Anna (librairieimaginaire) What are you reading this week?
The Nightingale

What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
It's got great reviews and the premise seemed like it would be interesting. Love me some historical fiction. It was on my list for this challenge last year but the library copy took so long to come in that I ran out of time to finish it in 2016.

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
Sooo many. I bought a bunch last year I never opened. The worst was probably A Clash of Kings, which I bought TWO YEARS AGO and still haven't read. It's on the list for this year and I am determined to finish it, finally.

Kara (ksolecki5) | 14 comments Week 3

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. I chose this in 2016 due to multiple recommendations. The only reason I have not been able to get to it until now is because I have so many other books on my shelves that are also in queue.
And with that, in reply to the last question- there are numerous books that I didn't get a chance to read that I would have liked to last year. One series that I've been putting off, if only because of how time-consuming, is the Game of Thrones books.

Not sure why I didn't read it in 2016

I've also got The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood on my list (for #21, a book that's a continuation of a book I've already read, having read Oryx and Crake for last year's challenge)

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it? I started to really enjoy listening to audiobooks by entertainers especially comedians because they do such a great job in the delivery. It is also a nice light book in the mix of other heavier books I have on my list. The reason I never got to it in 2016 is cause my library limits me to 8 books at a time and so it just kept getting pushed down the list for different reasons.
But luckily last time I checked at the library there was no wait list at all so i snatched it up and really enjoyed it!

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year? I have heard good things about Lilac Girls and wanted to read it but I am not always in the mood for historical fiction so i am hoping next time I will be in the mood for Historical it will work out to make my list!

I was planning on reading this for a topic from last year's Around the Year challenge (about a historical event), but fell into a pretty wicked reading slump so just never picked it up.

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
Goodness, there were a lot! A few of them were The Sword of Shannara, Rot & Ruin, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Shadowlands, etc...

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?

I have been slowly reading more classics over the last two years. It has been great to discover that they are not what I remember from high school. This book was on my list for last year but I bumped it for another. At the time I had read two classics, one being rather long, and needed a rest from reading them.

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?

My daughter and I wanted to finish reading the 39 Clues series last year. We only have about 2 or 3 more to go to finish the original series. We will be finishing them in the next month or so. They are fun quick reads that lead to many new discussions. My favourite kind of books.

I couldn't read this in 2016 because I never liked reading mainstream novels. I am getting myself to read it this year because it would be a shame not to.

American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers by Nancy Jo Sales

- What made you pick this book in 2016? One of my friends read it. She has a psychology background and we both work in a school, and I trust her judgment in books!

-Any reason you didn't read it? It is wildly depressing about how sexualized and objectified teenage girls are, and how much they idolize vapid celebrities. Now, I just want to get more perspective about the work that needs to be done culturally to switch away from materialistic and towards smart & confident.

I read Red Rising by Pierce Brown. LOVED it. Excited to continue on with the series.

- What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read it?
I've seen how popular this whole series has been the last couple years and after reading the description I knew it was the kind of series I would like, so it's been near the top of my TBR pile for awhile. As for why I didn't read it last year--unfortunately, last year wasn't a great reading year for me. There are many books I didn't get to. I'm definitely planning for this year to be different (and it already is).

I'd been on holiday to Venice (where this is set) in 2015 and as I like detective fiction set in different European countries I wanted to see if the series about Guido Brunetti would fill the gap left by having finished reading the Wallander series. I didn't read it as I got sidetracked by books I came across.

Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year?
Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend which I began reading and then stopped. It's on my list for this year.

Chelsea Chiosa | 69 comments - What are you reading this week? I read Crooked Kingdom

- What made you pick this book in 2016? I loved the first book to this duo logy, that I just had to pick it up as soon as it came out. It took me so long to finish, not because it wasn't epic (IT WAS!!!), but because I moved across country.

- Which other book did you really want to read but didn't open last year? Dragonfly in Amber

The Eyre Affair
What made you pick this book in 2016? Any reason you didn't read It?
It was recommended on a podcast I listen to. A friend read it and loved it and I love Jane Eyre. I just didn't have time to read it last year.
Which other book did you really want to read but didn't?
Lots of them, hoping to get to quite a few of them this year!
