In March I finished the Dagger and Coin series with The Spider's War, did a quick reread of The Communist Manifesto, read and loved Memory of Water, and also read a couple mysteries: Hypothermia and Nine Lives to Die (started in March but finished in April). The latter was a mystery for a bit of lighthearted fun.

Favourite book this month was definitely Memory of Water.

I just finished Octavia Butler's book Kindred, which is one of those books that crosses multiple genres. It's sometimes called science fiction, sometimes "dark fantasy," a coming of age book, etc., etc. The time travel element, in which a black woman from 1970s Los Angeles is involuntarily transported to the antebellum south multiple times to save the life of a white man (the son of a plantation owner) who turns out to be a distant ancestor, may be what earns it the sci-fi label, as well as the author's other works. Whatever you want to call it, it's an excellent book.

Nancy, how much Horror/Dark is in Kindred? I can stand a tiny little bit horror, but not more (e.g. Grass was already on the edge).

The book depicts the life of slaves: the beatings they receive from masters, the fact that can be separated from their families and sold at a moment's notice, or forced into sexual relationships with their owners. That's the kind of darkness you'll find. It's historical and realistic.

My reading challenge says i managed 8 books in March - but a closer look revealed that half are novellas.

I liked Death's End and The Long Way.... the most and Binti and Every Heart a Doorway for the short ones.

In paper, I'm continuing to read the Imager series by L.E. Modesitt Jr.. I'm on Antiagon Fire now.

In audio, I'm listening to More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon, a classic SF book that I'm reading with the "Evolution of SF" group. This edition was produced by Blackstone & is read by Stephen Rudnicki & Harlan Ellison.
