Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Important notes

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday February 1, 2018 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use .

*Check out all the specific card rules here. Wild and Wild Draw 4 rules have changed from last year.

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using .

*AUDIOBOOKS COUNT! If you listen to any, please include them.

*For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So "The Hiding Place," for example, could be used as title starting with T or H.

*Re-reads are OK provided it has been more than 6 months since last read.

*For colored cards, the cover of that book must be at least 50% the color listed on the card. We check this using this . Tip: Make sure "Exclude background color from extracted colors" is NOT checked. If you need help, let me know. If you have one that is showing up on the tool other than the color you think it should be, either I or Nikk or Catie can take it to the captains group for a second opinion.

*Your books must be on your Uno shelf marked as "read" with a date set in the month it's counted for in order to count -- so make sure you have done so.

*Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other!

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Team Saturn notes

We won't be claiming cards so read what you like! Toward the end of the month, we may ask for certain cards to be filled if we don't have anything to fill them yet.

When you're done with a book, please post it to this thread using the following format...
Book Title: (please link to book)
Author:
Dates Read:
Cards it Counts For/Ways it Fits:

The captains are keeping a tracking spreadsheet, and we will add all this info to the tracking spreadsheet before adding it to the main UNO team spreadsheet.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Hi Team Saturn!! I'm so excited for UNO this year with you all!

My name is Kaley and I'm your team captain. I live in Indiana in the US and have loved books since before I could read. This is my second year doing UNO but my first year as a captain, and I can't wait.

My favorite genres include YA and fiction, and I've just started getting into more mystery/thriller/suspense type novels. My favorite series ever is Harry Potter (which is what made me really fall in love with reading, even though I already enjoyed it). Some of my favorite authors include Sarah Dessen, Stephanie Perkins, Cassandra Clare, Jodi Picoult, and Rainbow Rowell.

Can't wait to get to know you all!

I'm really excited to do the Uno this year! This is my first year playing so might need some help along the way with figuring this out but I really look forward to reading new books and talking about them!

Avni (avniaghi) | 162 comments Hi everyone! I am Avni and I am from India. This is my second time playing UNO and I absolutely love this challenge. My favorite genres are romance and fantasy and my two favorite series are Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. The Book Thief and To Kill a Mockingbird are also my top favorites.
So excited!!!

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments HI everyone, I am Nikk and I am from Sydney Australia. This is my second year playing Uno and my second time being co-captain. My favourite genres are paranormal romance and urban fantasy but I am eclectic reader often reading as the mood takes me so also read YA, high fantasy, mysteries and anything else that takes my fancy.

I can't wait to start :-)

Catie Currie | 133 comments Hello! My name is Catie and this is my first time playing Uno. I really like YA and children's lit (I'm studying to be a teacher :P), but I'll read most things. I really love the authors Edward Eager, Lois Lowry, and Kazuo Ishiguro.

I am Pratik from India. This is my first time playing Uno, and it sounds like so much fun !
I don't have a FAVOURITE genre, but I avoid reading romance and YA as much as possible :')

Sarah | 87 comments Hi all! Just checking in for Team Saturn. So excited, I haven't played uno in a couple of years but I really enjoyed it the last time. I read anything and everything! At the moment I am loving a bit of YA as a break from my recent thrillers and classics binge.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I'm so excited that we have everyone on board! I wanted to check in with you all on preferences for the challenge. Would you prefer to claim cards ahead of time, or just read and fill in what it fits for later?

Personally, I tend to prefer the latter -- it's less limiting that way! You can read what you want and we can go and place them where they fit. Many books fit for more than one card, so it usually isn't a problem.

The only case I'd say we should consider targeting certain cards or claiming them would be when it comes to color cards. Since those have to fit a number and have to have a cover that's more than 50% of that color, it can be a little more challenging. So those we may want to plan for ahead of time.

As a reminder, for February, we have the following color cards:
7 Red
2 Green (x2)
4 Red
0 Yellow
8 Red
1 Yellow

Also: This year, the Wild Draw 4 cards must match the requirements for one of the colored cards in our hand (and each colored card can only be matched once for Wild Draw 4) -- and we have 5 of those for February as well.

Let me know what all of your preferences are! :)

Charly Hart (charlyhart) | 212 comments I'm fine with either way! I'm just excited to get started!!!

message 27: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A | 290 comments I also prefer to just read and fill it in as we go. In past rounds, a separate spreadsheet to log books and each option it could fit has been helpful.

message 31: by Kaley (last edited Jan 15, 2018 03:12PM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Ok so sounds like we will read as we go, but planning for color cards beforehand will probably be a good idea :) and I like the idea of sharing if we have any that people might be interested in! I've started a bookshelf on my own profile of books just as I find them that will fit colored cards .... a shelf for each color! (Not very fleshed out yet as I just add books as I see them, but I will add throughout the challenge as well.) So feel free to check those out, and if anyone has suggestions on books to add to the shelves, I can do that. I just figured that way we would have a list on hand for books that fit certain colors!

Red covers
Green covers
Blue covers
Yellow covers

Catie Currie | 133 comments How about Future Home of the Living God and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd for blue and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for green (it looks yellow but according to the color lab it's mostly green) and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for red? I'm probably gonna be reading those ones over the course of the challenge!

Both of those are good for blue - so I'll add them to the blue shelf. The mods have actually already ruled The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as yellow because they didn't agree with what the extractor said, so we can use it for yellow! I'll add to the yellow shelf :)

I'll be as concise as I can, but I tend to overexplain things. :) (So if anyone else has a more concise version -- feel free to chime in)

Each month of UNO, our team will be given at least 13 hands of cards. The aim is to read books to fit cards and fill as many hands as we can (starting from hand one, then hand two, etc.)

All books have to be more than 100 pages. Children's books, graphic novels, plays, etc. have to be over 25,000 words, which we have a way to find that out. Re-reads are OK, but it has to have been 6 months since you read it last. Audiobooks allowed. All books must be marked read with the date set to count. Can't start a book til after the challenge starts on Feb. 1.

There is a specific set of guidelines that states which factors can count for which card (too long for a TL;DR, but you can find it here.

The list is long, but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad!

message 40: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments And here's an example, if it helps, of a book read and what cards it could count for.

Say the book read was Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

It could count for any one of the following:
1 - First book in a series
3 - Character first name starting with H (Horace)
4 - Character first name starting with F (Fiona)
8 - Character first name starting with E (Emma)
Skip - Character surname starting with P (Peregrine)
Reverse - Kaley has read.

We would just fit it in to fill one of those cards as needed based on what our hands are.

I say if you want to, go for it! We have a 1 Yellow card in February, and I know it'll at least count for 1 Yellow because it's the first in the series so we could add it in for that or for a Wild Draw 4.

I'm trying to plan some books out for February myself and I can't wait til hits zero so we can start!

Yes it definitely could count for blue! I'll add it to the shelf. We don't have any blue cards for February sadly, but we could always fill it in for something not blue if you wanted to read it in February still. Or if you wanted to wait until it could count for blue, that's fine too.

message 47: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments While some of us are planning books for February, I wanted to leave a quick note about colored cards, because it can get a little confusing when some books have multiple covers.

From the FAQ:
Regarding the colored cards: Can the book be any cover...does it have to be the cover for the version you are reading?
It needs to be the edition you are reading.

So if you are planning to read something for a color card, and you come across two covers one of which fits the requirement, and one of which that does not you would need to read the edition that fits the requirement for it to count.

Also, make sure that the one that fits the requirement is the edition you put on your read/UNO shelf once done. :) That way the mods know you read the correct edition.

Let me know if you have any questions! We are now officially a week out from the challenge starting!! :D

Unfortunately, according to the color extractor tool, it does not. But as Kaley said earlier, the mods have disagreed with the website before, so, if it's important we could ask them!
