message 358: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #23 (100 km of home - Boca Raton) - Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls by T Kira Madden. I did not enjoy this book. The author felt like she was trying to do something "literary" rather than trying to convey her memoir. What the book ends up being is some random thoughts slung together with shocking details thrown in for effect. The only part I liked was the last section, and it's left completely unfinished. Not worth reading. 2 stars

24/24 - challenge completed!

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2387 comments READ & GO CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, 2019 - December 31, 2019

It's October 31, so I will see how many of the books I"ve completed this year will fit... I've discovered 16 with very little research. Although these prompts are VERY specific, and I can see at least 3 prompts for which I will most likely NOT have a book to correspond, I'll aim to read 18 books for this challenge! I may have to adjust that, depending.

17/18 as of November 25

✔️1. A novel set in the woods
Where the Crawdads Sing

✔️2. A novel involving a creative outlet
A Closed and Common Orbit

✔️3. A novel featuring food you have not tried
Pachinko

✔️4. A novel involving a train ride
What Blooms from Dust

✔️5. A graphic novel
The Arrival

✔️6. A novel involving ghosts
Beloved

7. A novel featuring a zoo, animal shelter or sanctuary

8. A novel set on a bus

✔️9. A novel where a main character seeks self-improvement
Flowers for Algernon

✔️10. A novel featuring a bike ride
We Are Okay

✔️11. A novel set in or involving something industrial (factory, etc.)
Washington Black

May be stretching it a bit, but Wash's design and construction of the large aquariums certainly involved industry.

✔️12. A novel involving a plane ride
Less

✔️13. A novel set in a snowy land
Beartown

✔️14. A novel set in a country other than your own
Giovanni’s Room

15. A novel featuring a garden

16. A novel set in a museum

✔️17. A novel set in a hotel
The Kiss Quotient

Though the whole novel is not set in a "hotel," the hotel plays a large role in their encounters.

18. A novel featuring an instrument you wish you could play

✔️19. A novel involving an escape
Them Bones

✔️20. A novel set underground or underwater
The Shape of Water

Though not strictly "set" underwater, water is necessary to the story and to the amphibious "man" creature. Excellent writing!

✔️21. A novel involving a road trip
Call Me By Your Name

22. A novel depicting a sci-fi technology that now exists

✔️23. A novel set in a city within 100 km of your own
A Raisin in the Sun

24. Bonus: A novel set in your home town

Set in a museum-- Meet Me at the Museum

I didn't count this when I first read it, as only a small part of it is set at the Silkeborg Museum. In the beginning, this is where Anders (Kristian in my version) receives, reads, and responds to Tina's letters. Even though the museum is central to the story, I was holding out for a book whose characters were physically inside a museum for a greater portion.

Well, now it is December and I counting it-- it does fit the prompt and I can no longer afford to nitpick.
