Novel about a man who lives in a room that has a hole in the cieling/top of wall, where he can see others in the next room, but they do not know he can see them. he can see them at their most vulnerable.

There was one passage I sort of remember, where a maid came into the room, it was nighttime, and he was watching her, saying how sad and alone she looked (or something like that).

Sounds weird I know, but still. I think it's a classic novel, but unsure.

Searching online I found a French novel that fits your description! It was published in 1908 and the original title was L'Enfer.
