@Amanda: I loved A Fine Balance! It's also a brick of a book so good luck but you should be fine as it's an awesome book.

@Charity: I've not finished The Mortal Instruments either... got 5 & 6 to go though I'm not in any hurry since I wasn't too captured by the whole story. I have finished The Infernal Devices though and it was bittersweet for me. I prefer this historical better than the present (Mortal Instrument).

2. On Liberty
3. North and South
4. Midnight's Children
5. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

I did so badly with this that all I need to do this year is to list the ones I didn't finish from last year. Groan. But at least it's barely more than one book a month. I should be able to accomplish that, even with the distraction of all Tien's wonderful games.

1 Hush - finished 9/15
2 The Killing of Worlds (Succession, #2) - finished 9/19
3 Flower Net - finished 1/1/15
4 The Shadow Speaker - finished 2/4
5 Hardcase - finished 2/19
6 The Street of a Thousand Blossoms - finished 1/15/15
7 Dreaming Water - finished 10/22
8 Darwin's Blade - finished 8/25
9 Flashback
10 Quiet Game - finished 4/29
11 Orbital Resonance - finished 7/19

Removed from the list -- no longer available at my library:
Louisiana Bigshot: A Talba Wallis Novel
The Vanished Hands (Javier Falcon, #2)
Dead Lines

Removed from the list -- won't finish:
One Man's Bible - quit 7/15

Amanda | 380 comments crap ! The year has started and I haven't decided which book to start with ( as I am still only halfway through Inkspell, I guess I still have a few days to decide !

Tien, I think I have a few bricks listed, which worries me, but I have been practicing reading longer books lately ;)

message 20: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9028 comments Mod
lol = panicking already, Amanda?

From my previous trends, I usually listed them very early then I'd be very lucky to have read 1 or 2 by mid year then around October I'd rush through the rest to finish before end year ;p

You can take out some of those bricks to make it more achievable, if you like. Or if you like the challenge, by all means! Also, feel free to cast some feelers out if anyone would like to buddy-read some of them with you. I find buddy-read helps with chunky books.

message 21: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments Inkspell is taking me longer than I expected, but I really shouldn't have under-estimated after reading Inkheart, and this is longer, almost 700 pages !

I really need to get over my fear of the brick. I am too hooked on the sense of achievement of finishing a 200 page book.

Would love to Buddy Read, but each time I have seen one I have already read it ( which is why I didn't reply re Ulysses. I read it at uni, and not sure I am ready to read it again even now ! ).

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9028 comments Mod
The sense of achievement of finishing a 1,000 pages is even better!

Amanda, you can pick your own book and see if anyone would like to join in with you? Don't wait around to see what other people would like to read... you never know, your request might push them to reading it sooner, with you!

I bought A Suitable Boy at a library sale last year, and the size of it freaks me out. I think it is large print too, making it twice as large.

I reviewed my previous years of LOST lists and found that some of the books are BIG books over 600 pages. That is a problem for me as BIG books intimidate me greatly. So, I decided to bite the bullet and buy some of them for my Kindle. (Finishing Les Misérables at 1400+ pages gave me courage.)

I bought Fall of Giants (900+ pages) and Outlander (600+ pages). I also got The Passage (700+ pages) as an audiobook from my library for this month's shelf. All three were on my 2013 LOST list.

I have started two (Fall of Giants and The Passage). I am not very far into Fall of Giants. But I am halfway through the audiobook, and it is GREAT! Really loving it.

My goal this year is to get my LOST books done. I would like to get to the end of the year with no leftovers.

Amanda | 380 comments Finished Cloud Atlas, so 2 books down, 10 to go.

Anyone else read it? I really enjoyed parts of it, and loathed reading other parts. Still not sure what the overall intent was in having 6 different stories, and the way the book was structured, but kind of interested to see the film to see how it makes it work and if it gives me a better sense of what the intent is.

A discourse of civilization and barbarism? Human nature? A thesis on the evils of power and greed? I just don't know, but am glad it is over!

I had been looking forward to it, but I wasn't aware of the structure beforehand, but even that isn't really where I struggled. I didn't like the first story, just not to my tastes, and the 6th / middle story is written almost phonetically - that was where I had the most trouble. My favourite stories were the Luisa Rey and Somni (Sonmi ?) stories, and I am not sure why we needed the Timothy Cavendish story in-between them. I don't see how that added to the themes I think were there.
