Just started Solomon Creed by Simon Toyne. I won it in a giveaway and it's not bad so far (well just 36 pages in).

I just finished The Deathsniffers Assistant, a crime novel set in an alternate London with magic and a steampunky feel.

I liked The Girl on the Train. Readers seem to be divided on this one, possibly because of the whole unreliable narrator thing. My review is here.

I gave The Girl on the Train 3.5 stars. I thought it was well written but the ending was too drawn out and the characters didn't have many redeeming features.

Another vacation read -- The Voices Beyond, by Johan Theorin. Sadly, it's not widely available in the US right now; I had to buy my copy in the UK. It's the last chapter in Theorin's Öland Quartet, which as a whole, is an amazingly good, atmospheric crime fiction series from Scandinavia.

Chelsea Close to Home is a great book. I love Linwood Barclay.

I finished Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica. Thirty-something social worker Heidi Wood invites a homeless young teen and her baby into her home. Heidi's husband and tween daughter aren't happy. As the story unfolds, the reader learns about the characters' back stories. A psychological thriller. 3 stars.

I finally got up the nerve to start another Highsmith novel, this time This Sweet Sickness. For someone who never married, she spends a lot of time writing about married couples.

Just finished . Lots to learn here: the country,
Buddhism , sex, how the police operate in Asia. The author leaves us with this thought. Don't mess with the East!

I finished Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. It's sci-fi, not a mystery, but it might interest some readers in this group.

In the book - which is almost 900 pages long - the moon explodes and the Earth's surface is destroyed. The plan is for a couple of thousand humans to survive in a space habitat, then to repopulate the Earth in 5000 years. For me, the book's premise is interesting but the massive amount of scientific jargon is tedious. 3.5 stars.

Have started the 3rd book in the Tesla series, The Chemistry of Death ; and started the first one in this series, Death in the Beginning; and will start Preston & Childs Crimson Shore today.
