Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9826 comments I finished The Alienist by Caleb Carr. NYC in 1896 can be a grim place to live, especially with a serial killer murdering young boy prostitutes. A 'modern' investigative team is assmebled to hunt the psychopath. Good historical thriller. 4.5 stars.

Bill I'm currently reading Backstrom: He Who Kills the Dragon by Leif G.W. Persson and about to start Death In Disguise, the 3rd Inspector Barnaby book, by Caroline Graham. From a non-mystery perspective, I'm doing a reread of an old favourite SciFi story, Friday by Robert A. Heinlein

Still reading Victim Without a Face. In its own way, it's reminiscent of the Scandinavian TV version of The Bridge, but so far it's pretty good.

Sean Peters | 155 comments Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton

'A dark, atmospheric haunting and chilling thriller"

Sharon Bolton takes us on a dark journey of friendships lost, of pain and despair, grief and anger and missing children. Narrated by three lonely and lost characters, Catrin, Rachel and Callum, we slowly get to know them and how they see the world and so differently.

A psychological story of hate, madness and revenge, with a haunting atmospheric and chilling story, with a mixture of history in the rare setting of The Falkland Islands.

Through the book and the three narratives we learn of their tangled secrets, lies, more lies, their grief, sadness, revenge.

It is set in the Falkland Islands and there are excellent descriptions of both the scenery and the life there. The plot is quite harrowing and really heartfelt. Isolation is something that springs to mind for the whole storyline and the main characters.

So why a four star, well not as gripping as her Lacey Flint stories, a little heavy and slow at times, and a little too much time spent on the story involving the whales.

Sometimes I question whether it went a little to far near the end or not, a question that is still in my head.

But still enjoyed the story, so four stars.

There, he hopes to expose a murderer and search for Catholic plots against the Queen. Pretty good historical mystery. 3.5 stars

I read it because it's listed as a best book of 2013.

Two Dutch brothers and their wives have dinner at a pricey Amsterdam restaurant to discuss their teenage sons, who committed a serious crime. The book is a disturbing psychological study of characters who behave deplorably. 3 stars.

1. Victim Without a Face tanked for me, and prompted me to write a blog post about the prevalence of violent, sadistic thrillers in the crime fiction market these days;
2. Starting Dirty War, a crime novel by Dominique Sylvain (from France, #2 in a series) that I need for #braincandy after just finishing

I love James Lee Burke. I recently read Tin Roof Blowdown which is not a Robicheaux mystery. It is however, an fictional account of
Katrina in New Orleans and the people that suffered in it. It is also a mystery, but what I found most fascinating was the depiction of the aftermath and how people struggled through.

Sean Peters | 155 comments How I Lost You by Jenny Blackhurst

A debut psychological crime novel

They told her she killed her son. She served her time. But what if they lied?

I have no memory of what happened but I was told I killed my son. And you believe what your loved ones, your doctor and the police tell you, don't you?

My name is Emma Cartwright. Three years ago I was Susan Webster, and I murdered my twelve-week-old son Dylan. I was sent to Oakdale Psychiatric Institute for my crime, and four weeks ago I was released early on parole with a new identity, address and a chance to rebuild my tattered life.

This morning, I received an envelope addressed to Susan Webster. Inside it was a photograph of a toddler called Dylan. Now I am questioning everything I believe because if I have no memory of the event, how can I truly believe he's dead?

If there was the smallest chance your son was alive, what would you do to get him back?

The book starts with a letter from convicted child killer Susan Webster to a parole board seeking understanding and release. Four years ago she was found guilty of the murder of her three month old son Dylan. The cause of death was suffocation which was blamed on Susan’s post-natal depression, although she remembers no details of the incident.

With the help of Cassie, her friend from Oakdale, and her new acquaintance Nick, a journalist, Susan sets out to discover if her son really is alive. This takes her on a journey to Durham University as she uncovers the buried secrets of her husband's past.

I found the number of characters confusing and often had to go back and reread. Similar names like Joss and Josh also jarred, and a little far fetched at the end.

But a reasonable entertaining book.

A difficult book to review and score, parts were good, other were a little over the top, other parts I became a little lost.

Three stars I think is fair
