Sherryl (salian) | 19 comments I didn't know Catcher in the Rye was banned.

I wasn't too impressed with it when I read it. Too much teenage angst. Too much "a boy pretending to be a man when he's really just a boy."

Sherryl wrote: "I didn't know Catcher in the Rye was banned."

It was banned some time ago mainly because of its language and vulgar contents; though I bet that from modern's view, we can't really see anything offensive about it.

Sherryl wrote: "Too much "a boy pretending to be a man when he's really just a boy.""

Holden was one annoying character, wasn't he? I was a little skeptical when I started this book but was quickly warmed to it despite of the character's bruteness. I liked discovering the real Holden that hid behind his bravado and sarcastic nature and the things that made him the way he was.

Still, I think it's pretty scary to think that some criminals like John Lennon's killer actually identified so much to Holden's character to the point that they weren't afraid to commit murder. It's crazy.

A book you can finish in a day
The Lady In The Van by Allan Bennett
Interesting Quote: "I have had some manure delivered for the garden and since the manure heap is not far from the van, Miss S. is concerned that people passing might think the smell is coming from there. She wants me to put a notice on the gate to the effect that the smell is the manure not her. I say no, without adding, as I could, that the manure actually smells much nicer."

A book by author you've never read before
The Good Doctor by Damon Galgut
Interesting Quote: "Everything is politics, Laurence. The moment you put two people in a room together, politics enters in. That's how it is"

A banned book
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
Interesting Quote: "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one

A book set in different country
The Master by Colm Toibin
Interesting Quote: "It seemed strange, almost sad, to him that he had produced and published so much, rendered so much that was private, and yet the thing he most needed to write would never be seen or published, would never be known or understood by anyone."

A book that became a movie
Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Interesting Quote: "Places do not lose their identity, however far one travels. It is the heart that begins to erode over time. The face in the hotel mirror seems blurred some mornings, as if by too many casual looks. By ten the sheets will be laundered, the carpet swept. The names on the hotel registers change as we pass. We leave no trace as we pass on. Ghostlike, we cast no shadow."

A book with magic
Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke
Interesting Quote: "I think we should sometimes read stories where everything's different from our world, don't you agree? There's nothing like it for teaching us to wonder why trees are green and not red, and why we have five fingers rather than six"

A book from your childhood
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Interesting Quite: "People come--they stay for a while, they flourish, the build--and they go. It is their way. But we (the animals) remain."

A book translated from different language
I Served the King of England by Bohumil Hrabal
Interesting Quote: "And the unbelievable that came true stayed with me, and I believed in the unbelievable, in the star that had followed me through life, and with its gleam constantly before my eyes I began to believe in it more and more, because it had made me a millionaire, and now that I had been brought to my knees I realized that my star was brighter than ever, that only now would I be able to see its true brightness, because my eyes had been weakened by everything I had lived through, weakened so that they could see more and know more."

A book by a female author
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Interesting Quite: "Don't waste your time on the obvious things. Write about what disturbs you, particularly if it bothers no one else."

A funny book
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
Interesting quote: Revenge is not a good thing...Revenge is like politics, one thing leads to another until bad has become worse, and worse has become worst.

A book with a one-word title
Blindness by José Saramago
Interesting quote: Fear can cause blindness, said the girl with dark glasses, Never a truer word, that could not be truer, we were already blind the moment we turned blind, fear struck us blind, fear will keep us blind.

A book at bottom of TBR list
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Interesting quote: Every seconds, another streak of silver glows: parentheses, exclamation points, commas--a whole grammar made of light, for words too hard to speak.

A book based entirely by its cover
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones
Interesting quote: I had discovered that the plainest house can crown a fantasy or daydream. An open window can be tolerated. So can an open door. But I discovered the value of four walls and a roof. Something about containment that at the same time offers escape.

A book set in high school: Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon
A book you own but have never read: Captivate by Carrie Jones
