I nominate Yarrow: A New Tale of Enchantment & Wonder "a modern classic of urban myth and magic. Cat Midhir has made a name for herself as the author of many popular fantasy novels. When a thief steals Cat's mysterious Otherworld -- a real place where she wandered at night with bright lords and the horned woman -- she cannot write and becomes trapped in the everyday world." I have wanted to read some of Charles de Lint for a long time and this seems like a good time to do it.

Janet, isn't Charles de Lint an Urban Fantasy writer? I've read Widdershins and it sure is UF, but I might be wrong about his other books.

You are correct that he is an Urban Fantasy writer but according to Wikipedia - "His fantasy fiction is described under the fantasy sub-genres urban fantasy, contemporary magical realism, and mythic fiction."

"Yarrow" is listed on goodreads list of Favorite Magical Realism Novels. /list/show/1...

Two books nominated, really need more nominations.

I have tried to read One Hundred Years of Solitude and just couldn't get into it. So I would like to try something less weighty by Gabriel Garcí­a Márquez so I nominate Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

I'd like to nominate The Alchemist. This is not my favourite genre, but I happen to have this book on my bookshelf and it is quite short.

By Garcia Marquez, Of Love and Other Demons it's a really beautiful story! I recommend :)

How about Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. His works are fantastical and this one is no exception. It's completely crazy. If not this one then possibly another of his shorter works. Or maybe Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson. Her books are truly bizarre.

How about Little, Big? It's probably more likely to be on the fantasy shelves, due to the author's other works, but I think it's magic realism. In some ways it feels like an attempt at a north american sort of One Hundred Years of Solitude (it doesn't take 100 years, but it is the story of a strange family).

I won't be joining you, though... I got to about 20 pages from the end and just could go any further. Not because it was bad, quite the contrary. It just affected me to much. Kind of like the way I'm not sure I'll ever watch the last five minutes of Six Feet Under again...

The Famished Road by Ben Okri. It's considered a classic by many, it's divisive (loved or hated), it's based in Africa...

In the words of one reviewer: "Imagine reading a David Lynch movie taking place in Africa with a script by Karl Marx and you´ve got some idea of what you´re in for. It starts right away and doesn´t relent. Okri manages to meld the personal, the fantastic, the political, the social, the emotional, the imaginary all into one unfolding story that somehow feels amazingly real."

Biggest criticism -- at over 500 pages, it's long.
