No matter what someone is going to be unhappy as members don't want Rosewater paired with any of the Fantasy options. :(

message 252: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments That goes against Diane's request and doesn't do anything for Tina's request, so what's the upside here? :D

message 253: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14184 comments Mod
unanimity is unlikely, plurality of the vocal is all we can hope for

message 254: by Chris (new)

Chris | 1122 comments Does it really matter that SF and fantasy be evenly distributed? Removing one constraint (that no one cares about?) would make scheduling a little easier in the future.

message 255: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments No, that's just a starting point :)

message 256: by Ryan, Your favourite moderators favourite moderator (new)

Ryan | 1735 comments Mod
Yeah, we rarely have three of each anyway.

Option 5?

October
Uprooted
Rivers of London

November
The Sword of Kaigen
The Martian

December
Rosewater
Ancillary Justice

message 257: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments Why are we looking for option 5? If there are new requests, I'd love to hear them in this thread so we're all aware of them.

message 258: by Ryan, Your favourite moderators favourite moderator (new)

Ryan | 1735 comments Mod
Option 3 doesn't work for Tina as Rosewater and Uprooted clash. Option 5 works with the restrictions Tina, Diane, Beth, and myself have stated.

message 259: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments Ah OK, so we're still working with the stuff from this thread, good. Yay if this works for everyone!

message 260: by Tina Reads (new)

Tina Reads | 144 comments If the majority chooses option 3, then I'll just make it work. No worries since it was a request on my part. I really appreciate the mods trying to accommodate everyone. ☺️

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments Anyone have any feelings about option 5 or does the silence mean people prefer the previous options? Right now it's looking like option 3, but you have until the end of today to change that!

message 263: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3637 comments Options 3 and 5 work well for me.

Any comments about next year? As always, I want to ask if you want to keep doing this, and if yes, anything you'd like to change?

message 265: by Tina Reads (new)

Tina Reads | 144 comments I really enjoy this and hope we continue next year.

message 266: by Aga (new)

Aga | 1036 comments I’m glad I have a chance to read the books I’ve missed. We have more interesting choices for VBC this way. I hope we will continue next year.

this is a standard of the group! thanks for participating

message 268: by Olga (new)

Olga Yolgina | 589 comments I'm also all in for continuing next year. It gives me a chance to make up for all the years I lost when I was an inactive member )))

Chris | 1122 comments SFFBC wrote: "As always, I want to ask if you want to keep doing this, and if yes, anything you'd like to change?"

Yes, definitely. I own several group books that I have yet to read, and I like to do it with others when possible.

I wish there were something we could do to increase participation. We get many new members every year, so in theory there should be plenty who would want to read past selections. I don't know how to tap into that potential, but it seems a worthy goal.

message 270: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments I feel like when someone posts in a reread thread, someone else replies. So it really is up to the people reading, someone has to start the ball rolling. If anyone ever feels like they want to take charge of a particular reread, that'd be very welcome!

message 271: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1763 comments I will definitely keep voting for rereads. I think the schedule is good for planning purposes. Three months at a time isn't too far out (at least for me).

IMO, I think the VBC component has spiced this up a bit, too, so thanks to those who call in, or try to!

Next batch of rereads starting soon! Who is reading one or both of these? Anyone want to be Necromancer/Cleric of the Month, and reanimate/revive some of these threads? :)

September 15th:
Foundation >> First impressions | Final thoughts & More
Elantris >> First impressions | Final thoughts

message 274: by Aga (last edited Sep 07, 2022 01:01PM) (new)

Aga | 1036 comments I’m reading Foundation right after Nettle & Bone

message 275: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1763 comments I am planning to read Foundation as well. Probably will be starting it next week close to the 15th.

message 276: by Tina Reads (new)

Tina Reads | 144 comments I'm also reading Foundation soon. Looking forward to it.

I reread Foundation recently and... well... I should comment in the appropriate thread.

Miss Garceau (missgarceau) | 2 comments Question(s):
-What is “VBC? 👀 🙏🫥

-I’m sure there is a semi annoying way (ŷ is not very user friendly imo) to find all the books that are free on KU. However, as an incredibly lazy person, is there already a KU thread? I have yet to find any of these options on KU & I’m wondering if this is on purpose? 🧐 Is KU “The Walmart of e-Books? Am I a bad person?😬🫣

Comment:
-This seems complicated and very involved, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the last 3 pages of this thread. 😂

-Honestly, the level of thought going into the choices & options is solid! I am just like, “I have like 20 of these on my TBR & some copies. What’s my deadline? Cool where’s the thread link? Excellent! Done.

Concern:
I’ve been a deadbeat member (I blame the app) & I’m coming in hot with the side-busting. 🤭

Don’t mind me. But also, I’m nervy to jump in bc I feel like I’m creeping in on a private conversation.😳

I’m scared to read Uprooted- but ready to rip the bandaid off. 😅

I have newly discovered the mobile desktop version of GR, and that makes reviving threads easier. Will people get annoyed if I start reviving the ones I want? 😈 This is a safe space right? 😉💜

The Sword of Kaigen A Theonite War Story by M.L. Wang The Sword of Kaigen: A Theonite War Story

Is free on KU. 🤦🏼‍♀

My bad carry on

Hi Miss Garceau!

First of all, super glad to have you! You're definitely not barging in, you're invited!

KU is fine, there's a LOT of content there, some gems and of course a lot of other things that you have to comb through. No moral judgment whatsoever for participating :)

Basically, our group is structured around the idea that there is no wrong way to love reading science fiction and fantasy, and we try to accommodate all the different avenues people would like to take for their own enjoyment. Everything here is "whatever sounds fun" from official reads to the games we play. Pick and choose what feels good to you! And for sure! We call posting in older threads "necroposting" and it's HIGHLY encouraged!!

Here's a quick recap of the things our group offers:

-Members vote on polls every month for which two books they'd like to read. We have 1 fantasy book and 1 scifi added evey month, with official threads, moderated discussion and so on.

-Some members engage in buddy reads, where they go to the buddy read thread and ask if anyone wants to read [a book] with them, and if people are interested, we start up another thread for people to chat about that book together.

-We also have a virtual book club (VBC) every month where anyone who wants to join a Zoom call (audio and video completely optional!) can come talk about a book we all pick together. The options for a VBC book are either the books of the month for that month or the 2 re-reads for the month (basically like an official club buddy read system). Everyone is welcome, and we do a deep dive on whatever book members agree on :)

Hope that helps! Looking forward to seeing what interests you!

One of this month's rereads is very likely going to be the Virtual Book Club pick this month. The date is November 20th, so you have two weeks to read these books!

November 15:
Rosewater >> First impressions | Final thoughts & Series
Uprooted >> First impressions | Final thoughts

And don't forget to vote for 2023 rereads!
