Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3676 comments great Sara and Lori! I just haven't been able to spend much time on GR so I missed it. It works out great for me to be later, thanks!

Still on my agenda, Sue.

message 604: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette | 61 comments I’m planning on joining for this one.!

message 605: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3676 comments Great, Sara & Antoinette. When do you guys plan on starting? I can start at the beginning of the month or hold off to midmonth if that's what you guys are doing.

Sara, is there a thread for it yet? I like to make a post and that way I can get updates if anyone posts.

message 606: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette | 61 comments My plan is to start it after I finish my current book, so probably right by October 1.

message 607: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2248 comments Sara, I am still planning to read Rabbit Run in October.

I am going to read Jaber Crow by Wendell Berry in November with Cheryl from On the Southern Literary Trail. Are there others here interested?

Sam also mentioned the Big Sur Trilogy, starting with The Stranger, which sounds interesting to me. Is it on the schedule? If not, I might propose it for December.

message 608: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2248 comments Okay, I just saw that Sam did propose The Stranger for October. I don’t know if I can get to it that soon. I did not see it on the schedule yet. I would prefer November if that works for San.

message 609: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2248 comments Sorry, I did just see that The Stranger is on the schedule for October. Maybe I can squeeze it in.

Sam | 994 comments Terry wrote: "Sorry, I did just see that The Stranger is on the schedule for October. Maybe I can squeeze it in."

If you want to move Stranger to later October or early November we can. I am bogged in various book prize longlists readings and haven't even gotten to Fugue in Time yet. Stranger is going to be a pretty easy read. I was nibbling at it and I think it will go quick once you start.

I will be in for Rabbit as well.. Just waiting on a hold to release.

Also reading Shelley's In Defence of Poetry with Cynda, Wilson's Ma Rainey's Big Bottom, and Hesse's Journey to the East as October buddy reads.

message 611: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2248 comments Sam, I ordered The Stranger and will push it forward to after Rabbit Run which I have not yet started and work in some others that were previously on my plan for October. I also ordered the second book in the trilogy.

I will plan to start as soon after the 1st as possible. I will be setting up the threads for October in the next few days...as soon as I can find the time. Just returned from a trip and everything is upside down today.

Terry - Cheryl is also a member of this group. I will be happy to set you guys up a thread here if you want.

Savita - The Southern Trail is another very good group and you could join there with no obligation to participate in anything other than the read if you wanted. I sent you a link to the group.

You guys just let me know.

I will wait and see what Terry decides about where the book is to be read . Sam also intends to join the discussion if the book is to be read in this group .
I may join On the Southern Literary Trail group anyway because, as such , I want to expand my list of authors and books . So, thank you once again!

Terris | 4216 comments I've been wanting to read Jayber Crow. This may be a good time :)

message 632: by Brian E (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 328 comments In deciding which novel of Wendell Berry's PORT WILLIAM series would be my first, I had decided to start with A Place on Earth the second one written. I heard it was OK and even advisable to skip the first book Nathan Coulter because you'd learn the town characters better from the 2nd book and be reading a much better book to boot. If I liked A Place on Earth, I would then read other PORT WILLIAMs, especially his most popular one Jayber Crow

But now I see that while A Place on Earth is set in WW II, Jayber Crow starts in 1932 with Jayber coming to Port William. Is it a prequel?

Any suggestions by any Port Williamites out there on which book to read first?

message 633: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2248 comments Thanks, Sara. I hope we have lots of readers for Jayber Crow in November!

Brian E wrote: "In deciding which novel of Wendell Berry's PORT WILLIAM series would be my first, I had decided to start with A Place on Earth the second one written. I heard it was OK ..."

Brian, you can read Berry in any order. I started with Jayber Crow and have read them all. Each stands on its own, even though they all tie together with repeating characters and Port William setting.

message 635: by Brian E (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 328 comments One question then. Do all the events of Jayber Crow occur before the events of A Place on Earth? I would think so but just want to be sure.
If so, then reading Jayber first makes some sense.

message 636: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
They just are not written in a linear fashion, Brian. He bounces back and forth in time, filling in history as he tells the story, so that one book never picks up where the last one ended. It is hard to explain, but you get revelations of the characters in each book and it is kind of like putting together a complete puzzle.

message 637: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
The books are not linear, Brian. Some events might have taken place before and some after. The history of the characters and the town are slowly revealed in each novel. Jayber Crow explains how Jayber comes to be a part of Port William, but some of the events in A Place on Earth may have taken place before that. Some are obviously after because Jayber is already the barber of the town in A Place on Earth. The books are not written so that one takes up where the other leaves off. You can read them in the order they were written, but I don't think it is possible to read them in an events order.

message 638: by Brian E (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 328 comments Got it, Sara. I like doing things orderly so I was hoping that, like Émile Zola's Rougon-Macquart series, there might be some kind of recommended order by someone, not necessarily the author. But I guess there isn't any, so I'll need to reach back to my 1970 self and just go with the flow.
Besides, after reading and enjoying A Fugue in Time, I should be ready for any non-linear storytelling Berry wants to throw at me.

And, I checked my schedule and my planned October reads so far are:
- Margaret Kennedy's The Constant Nymph,
- Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John.
- Christa Wolf's Cassandra: A Novel and Four Essays,
- Mary Cholmondeley's Red Pottage
- Jean Webster's Daddy-Long-Legs &
- Olivia Manning's The Great Fortune

and November's planned reads so far are:
- Olivia Manning's The Spoilt City,
- Rumer Godden's Kingfishers Catch Fire &
- Simone Schwarz-Bart's The Bridge of Beyond

so I really should throw a bone to those long-suffering, under-appreciated and under-represented male authors and read a book by one. I will add Jayber Crow to my planned November reads.

message 639: by Sam (new)

Sam | 994 comments Sara can you update the Hesse read novel for October to The Journey to the East?

And could you update the August Wilson play for October to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom?

Anyone wishing to join these reads for October are welcome. There are only a couple of us reading in each buddy read and though we may reference another work from the author, I don't think we need be wary of any spoilers.

Thanks Sara in advance.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4991 comments Moderators, sabagrey and I will read On the Admission of Women to the Rights of Citizenship by Nicolas de Condorcet ((1789)

Those who have appreciation for early feminist arguments such as A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft might also like to read this short essay.

We will read in November. May we have a buddy read thread?

message 643: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
I will add it to the schedule, Cynda. I normally set up the threads the last week of the month. If you need it sooner, let me know.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4991 comments Thank you Sara. . . .Just to clarify things in my brain: I should request buddy reads the last week of the month for the following month? So you would prefer that I had waited until the week of October to request buddy.read.for November? Is my understanding better now?

message 645: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
No, Cynda. You should request them any time. I will put it on the schedule, but I just don't generally create the threads for November until the last week of October. If you want the thread earlier, I will be happy to put it up now. Sorry if I confused you.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4991 comments No not to worry, Sara.. I am quite capable of confusing myself. . . Thank you for the clarification.

My apologies to everyone, as I am running late this month on all my chores. I have now posted discussion threads for all except On the Admission of Women to the Rights of Citizenship. GR is blocking me at the moment, but I will absolutely have that one up before the day is finished.

If there are any other reads that I have failed to get on the schedule, please let me know. Happy reading to everyone!
