Klowey | 603 comments I have more of a general question. Do any of you ever do buddy reads of 2 or more books or short stories that you think have an similar "philosophical" theme that you find especially interesting? The idea is that we'd compare the variations on the theme, which could differ by original language/culture, time/year written, perspective, etc.

I seem to be running into books and stories like this more and more lately.

I love the ide of theme related buddy reads geared more to discussion than just personal enjoyment.

I am posting threads for The Chosen and Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City for October. I don't have anything else on the list. Please let me know if there are other reads I have missed.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Would anyone be interested in reading Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. These are deeper, darker stories of human experience, the kind that kept me simmering sage on the stove. My Bible is always nearby when reading at home.

When? Early 2025, I think.

Yes, with about a 6-month reading time.

Yup!

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Thanks Katy and Sam. Yes six (6) months, perhaps the first half of the year.?

message 908: by Sam (last edited Oct 31, 2024 05:52AM) (new)

Sam | 995 comments This post is regarding Women who Run with the Wolves. I will make time for whatever date is chosen. I think this is a good choice, one has been recommended to me and I have postponed for years, with multiple potential avenues for discussion. I hope we can generate more readers since it is a book that begs the readers to share their own opinions.

message 909: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5330 comments Oh, this is exciting, to finally read Women Who Run With the Wolves with you all! I like the flexibility of the six month timeframe, and the beginning of the year works fine for me, so count me in. Thanks, Cynda!

message 910: by Cynda is preoccupied with RL (last edited Oct 31, 2024 10:55AM) (new)

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Let's say first six months then! The thread will remain open anyway so that if more time is needed for rereads and contemplation any of us can do that too.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Sara would you please set up a buddy read for January through June for Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. Katy, Sam, Kathleen, and I will be reading. Anyone is welcome to join us.

I have added it to the schedule, Cynda, and will create the discussion thread at the end of December.

Paul Hughes | 5 comments Currently midway through In Search of Lost Time, Volume 1 (Swann’s Way). Going to be through all the volumes over an unknown time span- would love to find anyone at a similar stage, who is interested in joining along or who has already read it and would like to discuss- cheers, Paul :)

It was a long read selection only a few months back, Paul. You might check out the thread and post comments there. The threads are always open.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments In February, Terry and I are hoping to read In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner. Would others like to join us?

message 918: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2255 comments In the Shadow of the Banyan Tree is about the bombing of Cambodia. My granddaughter who is 15 loved it and recommended it to me. When I put it on my TBR, Cynda immediately suggested the Buddy Read. I hope others will join us.

I would love to join this buddy read. That title has been on my TBR for quite a few years, and I've just never gotten around to it. I agree that it looks like a book that the reading experience could really be enhanced by discussion and hearing other's point of view on things along the way.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments @ Sara. Thanks :)

@ Steph. Welcome!

message 929: by Terry (last edited Nov 21, 2024 01:41PM) (new)

Terry | 2255 comments Sam and I were interested in reading The Witches of Eastwick, by John Updike in January 2025.

Will anyone else join us?

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments I would like to reread this novel The Witches of Eastwick. . . .I would also be interested in reading other John Updike books as well, just about any that others want to read.

message 931: by Terry (new)

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Oh good Katy :) Maybe we could continue with The Widows of Eastwick which is the continuation of Witches? And then maybe maybe a collection of short stories or any other book you chose?

Yes, that is what I would like to read after witches.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Okay good. Would February2025 work for you Katy?

message 938: by Sam (new)

Sam | 995 comments All you Updike lovers should enjoy The Stories of John Cheever. It had some support from the more active of you this month in the polls but not nearly enough to carry it. I would suggest it as a buddy read to be read over a couple of months or more so we could relish and discuss the stories. But I am hoping Sara will get behind this and choose a possible date and the details. I have found buddy reads really need four or five people actively discussing a book to bring out the best experience and that is what I am hoping for in my next turn with this book. I think this book is a great candidate for this format. And though the book is a collection of stories, it is like Dubliners, a collection that takes on a more interesting dimension when read as a whole than as separate stories because of the thematic intertextuality. So Sara I know you need this for your Pulitzer challenge; I encourage you to try and find a space for this in the upcoming year, even if we had to take it at a pace of one or two stories a week. There are 61 stories. BTW, so that may be a valid approach.

For those of you interested why I am asking Sara to suggest this a buddy read, I think she is a lot more likeable and can probably get more of you to join in. ; )

And yes, I am in on Witches, Wolves, and whatever else comes up.

I am laughing aloud at For those of you interested why I am asking Sara to suggest this a buddy read, I think she is a lot more likeable and can probably get more of you to join in. ; ). I always think you are so intelligent, Sam, that you are the buddy read leader to chase!

In any case, I would be delighted to join, since it has been on my TBR for quite a long time and I do need it for the Pulitzer Challenge. My plate is very full for January already, so I am going to suggest we begin in February and take one or two a week, as you have suggested (might depend on the length of the story whether we can fit in one or two). The thread can stay open as long as necessary and this will certainly help anyone make the 24 required for the Short Story Challenge.

So, do we have others who would like to join?

message 941: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 751 comments I enjoy short stories, and would also like to join in with The Stories of John Cheever read. February would be fine, although I may miss the first few stories because I have cataract surgery scheduled for late January. I'll try to read the first stories ahead of the February start.

I think that Sara is wonderful too. But don't sell yourself short, Sam, because you have great insights that are very valuable to any group reads.

Choose your months and I'll join in. I don't preplan my reading other than group reads.

message 943: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5330 comments I would love to join Sam, Sara and Connie for the Cheever stories buddy read! February is great for me.

message 944: by Greg (new)

Greg | 940 comments With work, it can be hard to plan. I doubt I'll manage to join all of them, but I'll join in some of the stories for sure. I didn't care for The Wapshot Chronicle, but I enjoyed multiple stories by him, including the frequently anthologized "The Swimmer." I'd like to read more.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments I too would like to join in on the John Cherver stories.

Cynda is preoccupied with RL (cynda) | 4998 comments Katy, let's read Witches of Eastwick first after which we will be able to get more interest and a more settled buddy read schedule, maybe. . . . .Check in with you after

message 947: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2255 comments I voted for and would love to join the Cheever reading but would prefer to push it off to April as my schedule for next year is filling up! Also, as I recall, this is a thick book snd I don’t want to crowd myself. Our Bingo challenge hasn’t even been posted yet!

I will put it on the schedule starting in February, with the understanding that this is going to be a slow read and will stretch throughout the year.

message 950: by Klowey (new)

Klowey | 603 comments I'd be up for considering The Stories of John Cheever probably after February. Sounds like quality fun.
