I was a very casual reader in 2023 and didn’t participate in any reading challenges, or even record the books I read. I want to be a bit more organized in 2024 and would like to read at least 101 books!

1. Too Wicked to Kiss (Gothic Love Stories #1) by Erica Ridley

It had a good plot, but the character development needed work.

I should have liked this book more, but it just didn't grab my attention. Might be one to revisit at a later date.

3. Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher
5 stars!

I've never read Jane Eyre, which this is a spinoff/retelling, but this book stood well on its own. Love it!

13. The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1; Rincewind, #1) by Terry Pratchett

3 stars
{Re-read}

Many years ago, during HS/college, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series was my go-to favorite series. It's been 20+ years since I've visited Discworld though, and I want to kick off a complete re-read of the (massive) series this year. I don't remember a lot about the books, except that they were really humorous. I looove satire! But dang, are they way harder to read than I remember ha!

I had to read and re-read sooo many sentences and look up words. I'm guessing back in the day I did a lot of skimming hahaha. First in series books are always rough and this book was no exception, but overall it was an enjoyable read and I'll definitely be continuing with the series.

14. Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

5 stars

Kingfisher is fast becoming one of my all time favorite authors, loved this book!

15. The Witchwood Knot by Olivia Atwater

4 stars

Well written, but a bit confusing to follow.

16. The Never King (Vicious Lost Boys, #1) by Nikki St. Crowe
4 stars

17. The Dark One (Vicious Lost Boys, #2) by Nikki St. Crowe
4 stars

18. Their Vicious Darling (Vicious Lost Boys, #3) by Nikki St. Crowe
4 stars

19. The Fae Princes (Vicious Lost Boys, #4) by Nikki St. Crowe
5 stars

Once in a while I'm in a mood. When real life is too overwhelming with this or that, and I need to truly escape to a reading haven. It's during these times that I gravitate to a genre so out of my normal reading wheel house, fantasy-reverse harem.

Absurd, ridiculous, physically unlikely, (snort), but yet this small, niche genre offers a complete escape from too heavy things, in this case a large covid outbreak at my work, {which is utterly exhausting}.

In normal times these books would make me cringe with all the wrongs but yet, these books met me where I'm at, giving me a much needed balm (or fairy lube...), and they made me smile when I needed it most. A few moments in a very distorted Neverland with Pan and his dysfunctional family of deviants was just what I needed this week ha.

20. The First and Last Adventure of Kit Sawyer by S.E. Harmon

3 stars

I should have liked this book but it fell flat for me because I did not connect with the two main characters At All. The protagonist just annoyed me. Good world building and storyline though.

message 26: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 20, 2024 03:41AM) (new)

21. Bonded by Thorns (Beasts of the Briar, #1) by Elizabeth Helen

4 stars

This is a solid start to a fantasy reverse harem series that's loosely based on Beauty and the Beast. Writing is a bit choppy but I think this is a writing debut so that's to be expected.

message 27: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 20, 2024 04:08AM) (new)

22. Woven by Gold (Beasts of the Briar, #2) by Elizabeth Helen

2 stars

Well this series went downhill fast. I overlooked a lot of writing flaws in the first book because a. first in series books are always a bit of a mess and b. it's from a pair of new authors who first released it on social media. But, I have higher expectations for a second in series book, especially when it's going to be a seven book series.

This book was a mess. It dragged on for way to long and I was bored halfway through. The writing got worse and the dialogue between characters was just painful to read in some parts. And then the part that made me grit my teeth-there's obvious things in this story that are pulled from movies/tv shows. I know authors get their inspiration from all sorts of things, but the blatant copying of plot elements drives me nuts.

I finished the first book planning on binge reading the series. But, after this second installment I've removed the rest of the published books from my tbr list. Just not worth my time.

23. Lord Mouse (Lords of Davenia, #1) by Mason Thomas

3 stars

This book threw me for a loop. The first 60% of it was very well written and I had already designated it as a 5 star read. And then it went to shit. It felt like a different author finished the book-the pace became frantic, and things just kind of jumbled together into a big mess. Even the dialogue changed stylistically.

I seriously wonder if someone else finished writing this book because the writing style changed so much. Or, perhaps there was a deadline the author had to make and he just threw some stuff together to get it finished?

Very disappointing and I ended up giving it a weak 3 star rating.

24. What Feasts at Night (Sworn Soldier, #2) by T. Kingfisher

5 stars

It's official, Kingfisher is one of my all time favorite authors.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

25. A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews

5 stars

{Re-read}

I think this is my 3rd or 4th time reading this book, absolutely charming!

message 31: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 26, 2024 04:50PM) (new)

26. The Beast (Monsters and Beauties #1) by Jenika Snow

4 stars

This is a book that you read after a long day at work, while drinking an adult beverage, and then after you finish it you find your unsuspecting husband, haha. This was flat out erotica-well written and a fun, quick reading romp.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

27. The Hunter (Monsters and Beauties, #2) by Jenika Snow

3 stars

Another quick erotica, not horrible but very similar to the first book in the series.

Favorite Book: Nettle & Bone

I didn't think I had read a lot this month, but looking at my stats I may actually have set a new personal record for books read in a month. However, quite a few of them were smaller books and 'fluff' erotica, which are typically fast reads.

28. Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

5 stars

This book was not a fast read and the first 60% was fairly slow paced, but once things started happening the story really sucked me in. This is a new-to-me author and I'm so glad I discovered her!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

29. Gypsy Blood (All The Pretty Monsters, #1) by Kristy Cunning

2.5 stars

I've read the authors other series and liked it well enough but this book was a hot mess. Very all over the place and I honestly finished it not really having any idea what the actual plot was.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

30. The Lost and the Chosen (The Lost Sentinel, #1) by Ivy Asher

4 stars

This is a great start to a reverse harem fantasy series, that features a kick butt protagonist that reminds me a lot of Iona Andrews Kate Daniels. The biggest negative for me was that there are five male interests, which in a reverse harem story tends to be overkill and the characters kind of blur together. But besides that this book was pretty great and I immediately started the second book after finishing this one.

message 37: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 11, 2024 10:04AM) (new)

31. Awakened and Betrayed (The Lost Sentinel, #2) by Ivy Asher

4 stars

Another solid story, though at times it felt more like YA than an adult book. There was also several awkwardly written sections of dialogue, which seems to be a consistent flaw in the reverse harem world. I'm really intrigued by the storyline developing in this series though, so the awkward at-times romance parts are easier to overlook in this series.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

32. Three Swedish Mountain Men by Lily Gold

4 stars

I usually don't read contemporary reverse harem, in fact this might be my first book of that genre that doesn't include a fantasy element. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book, especially the character development. It was almost a 5 star read for me, but one of my pet peeves is a storyline of a protagonist hiding a secret that always gets exposed towards the end of the book, drama-lama ensues, and then the story stutters into a quick HEA. Since I rate books mostly on how the story makes me feel, I just couldn't give this book 5 stars, but it was close!

message 39: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 14, 2024 04:28PM) (new)

33. The Marked and the Broken (The Lost Sentinel, #3) by Ivy Asher

3 stars

This series has kind of fizzled for me at this point. It definitely feels YA, in spite of the violence and graphic sex scenes. I went through a huge YA phase about 10 years ago and am completely Over. It. There's one more book in the series but I've decided to not read it, since the story arc has wrapped up and the loose ends aren't interesting enough to make me want to read another book. Overall I enjoyed this series, but I'm ready to move on.

34. Clockwork Boys (Clocktaur War, #1) by T. Kingfisher

5 stars

Binge read this in one day, soooo good! I love me a good adventure, impossible-quest story and this book does not disappoint. But, Kingfisher's strength is in her character development, especially with dialogue. I read this in part while at my kids sports practice and one of the scenes, between the characters and their newly acquired horses, had me laughing out loud so hard, it was mortifying LOL!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

35. Murder In Thrall (New Scotland Yard/Doyle and Acton, #1) by Anne Cleeland

4 stars

{re-read}

I've read this book three times now, it's one I get the itch to read every couple of years but have never been compelled to read more of the series. This time was no different. A solid book with great character development, but after I finished it I have no interest in continuing on with the series. Maybe someday, lol.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

36. Fractured Shadows by K.A. Knight

3 stars

I'm torn about this book. I really enjoyed the storyline and the world building. And the characters were well developed and worked well with each other. However, the last half felt rushed and I began losing interest in the story. Overall a solid book but I'm not interested in reading the sequel at this time.

message 43: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 20, 2024 11:20AM) (new)

37. The Wonder Engine (Clocktaur War, #2) by T. Kingfisher

5 stars

Another fantastic story by Kingfisher. Her world building was really good in this book, and her character development is some of the best I've ever read. Can't wait to continue with the other books in the world-arc.

message 44: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 20, 2024 11:14AM) (new)

38. Triple-Duty Bodyguards by Lily Gold

5 stars

This book had a surprising amount of deep-feels, which caught me off guard. I was expecting some reverse harem fluff and ended up becoming really invested in the characters and their background stories. There were a few small things that annoyed me about the story, but overall it was a solid 5 star read.

message 45: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 23, 2024 06:09AM) (new)

39. Nanny for the Neighbors by Lily Gold

4 stars

Another great reverse harem story, with great character development. I'm getting burned out with the genre though and this will probably be my last R-H book for a while.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

40. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

4 stars

A charming story about what being part of a family actually means. Loved the world building and the characters, especially the secondary ones. The romance storyline felt a bit forced, but overall a great book from a new-to-me author.

message 47: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2024 05:51PM) (new)

41. The Pumpkin Spice Café (Dream Harbor, #1) by Laurie Gilmore

4 stars

This was a Libby library ebook that I checked out on a whim, based the the synopsis. I really liked this book-well developed characters, a surprising amount of spice, and a sweet romance that had me smiling throughout most of the book. I'll definitely be continuing the series when more books are released.

message 48: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 23, 2024 06:10AM) (new)

42. The Tourist Attraction (Moose Springs, Alaska, #1) by Sarah Morgenthaler

4 stars

A charming, first-in-series story by a new author. Overall it was a fun read-the characters were well developed and the world building was great. Towards the end things began feeling rushed and I wish that had been fleshed out better. But, overall a great book.
