message 1: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I have become seriously addicted to challenges, and love finding books to fit them. However, challenges don't always fit my reading goals/dreams. So, this is the place to make some of my own! I'm the type that needs to write it down (and loves making lists) or I don't feel I've actually accomplished something. So, here it goes!

Judithe | 6566 comments The List of Self Challenges!

Self-Challenge #1:The "Challenge" challenge:
Duration: July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010

Complete 18 challenges. The challenges can be of any type, excluding this one, and in any group or personal, but all must start on or after July 1. Post a list of completed challenges including "sponsoring" site (can be your list too for personal challenges), challenge details and books read.

Self-Challenge #2:Dust off those books!
Duration: July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010

Read 6 books that have collected dust bunnies on your bookshelf for more than 5 years...in other words, long enough that you can't remember the last time you actually read, or even considered reading that book

I've found I'm only reading books to fit challenges, but have come across others again that I think, "Oh, that was a good book...I'd like to read it again sometime." Then putting it back because it didn't fit a challenge somewhere! So, this is my challenge for those, and they'll fit my "goal-oriented" reading style of late!

Self-Challenge #3: Firsts:
Duration: July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011

Read 12 booksthat are the first novel in a new-to-you series. Read one book per calendar month (that means, can't read and count 3 new ones in ONE month...)

To complete:
Post the date when you've completed your book.

You must also say if, after reading:
A - would definitely look at her other books, since I've enjoyed this one very much.
B - could take it or leave it. Was not an unpleasant experience but I'm not burning rubber to get to her other books.
C - Oh well, I tried. Definitely not my cup of tea.

A little review of the book read is welcomed but not required.

message 8: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Jun 29, 2010 02:17AM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments In RRR I created a challenge (their "create your own") called New2Me for 2010. I set a goal of 50 #1s in 2010. So far I have read 35/50. At the same time though, I created a personal challenge to read at 52 next-in-series books in 2010. I completed that one already (52/52 read!).

Ok if I post, continue on with mine, in combo w/your #3, Judithe?

message 9: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Go for it! I'm thinking another "challenge" could be, "How many challenges can you fit book X in?" I love getting lots of challenges accomplished, and with tweaking the books to fit the max number of challenges!

I might see if I can do you 52 next-in-series books...don't think I can get that many "firsts" done this year... For the "next-in", that means, for example, book #2 in an already started series? And can you only count one book per series? Or can you read books #2-6 in a series and count it as 5 for your challenge?

message 10: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Steph, I was looking for your challenge and couldn't find it...could you give me a link? I like the idea, and want to look more at the details, though I'm not sure my budget would survive me starting one like that! But so tempting!

message 11: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I'm in on #1 & #3. Do you want me to just post them both here, or do you want to start a thread for each?

And Steph, post your 1st in series and next in series challenges here too--I just went back and counted and I've read 23 1st-in-series and 39 next-in-series so far this year, so they're doable for me. Since you've already finished your next in series goal, maybe you could start a new one for the 2nd half of the year?

message 12: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Laura, I put up new threads in the challenge section...probably easiest to track them there! And welcome and good luck! Challenges are much more fun with others participating! Looking forward to seeing what you find in new series especially!!

message 13: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I'd be interested in the next-in series too.... :)

Lol. I'm a loser.

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments LMAO!!! I LOVE it!

Of course ... here's a link to my 2010 challenge page, it has all the ones I've completed (summary at the top - remove as I complete them) and ones I'm still workin' on, including a link to my 2009 challenge page which has my "Lifetime of Books" challenge on it STILL b/c I can't seem to finish that frickin' thing! :)

My 2010 Reading List @ RRR, plus I created a list page here @ SOS that has links to all my on-going reads. :)

I'll post my 1st book and next-in-series lists soon. Plus some new ones! Yeah! Let the challenge madness continue!

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments LOL!! You got that right! There are MANY worse addictions to have! :D

message 18: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I have another idea for a crazy challenge that I've been wanting to do forever. Hmmm...but both my ideas aren't really personal challenges, they're fun for the whole family, kwim?

Steph, you need to do SOS challenges. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Ok, fine, you can have ifs, ands & buts. But if you do want to bite the bullet and have group challenges, start a thread and we can all post ideas.

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Jun 29, 2010 06:22PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32426 comments ****WARNING: POST BELOW SO NOT POLITE, BUT SOOOOO FUNNY****

LOL. I had to google "kwim". The first thing that came to mind (my dirty, dirty little mind) was kw**f. And, OMG I CANNOT STOP LAUGHING, you MUST Google that word right now and tell me what the first link says!!!!! :D

*wipes off tears of laughter*

****MOVING ON****

I will do that right now! Off to create a post for challenge ideas AND come up with one for the group. And steering clear of "Urban Dictionary" for sake of stomach cramping caused by too much laughter at once.

2010 ya mean? :)

Tell me you are in the middle of more than 24 series? I have so many to catch up on, yet I continue to start new ones .... what a mess. Love it though. I just finished several fantastic firsts. I'm exhausted now though b/c I left EIGHT books completed pending reviews. Blah. Great to have them to refer to in the future, but dreadful writing them up. Wish I had a transcriptionist to do it for me. hehe

message 26: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Hmmm...I seem to be getting ahead of myself! Oops & THANKS!!!

And yeah...reading all of those. Had resolved not to start anymore, as those still churn out books often enough that I had a new book or two most months...but that was just like starvation. So, it has gradually increased, especially in the few months! On the upper list, 9 of those were started this year. Sigh. Y'all are such a bad influence on me!!

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I love that fictfact site--I just went and checked how many series I'm in the middle of and it's 57. Yikes.

But technically, I'm really only in the middle of 14--the other 43 are series that I'm caught up on, but the next book isn't out yet.

And of those 14, there are a few that I don't have much interest in continuing with, anyway, so it's not that bad. :)

keep telling yourself that...

But will you be able to let them slide??? A few of mine from years ago have...but I'm thinking I'd like to get a couple of those caught up....

Regardless, I love your defense, and will just say ditto to
anyway, so it's not that bad. :)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Lol. A few are YA series that I found the first 1 or 2 books utter crap, so as much as I like to put a check mark next to a finished item, I doubt very highly I'll ever pick the series back up.

Also, Katie MacAlister's Aisling Grey series. I read the 1st three books--the 1st two were just ok for me, and the 3rd I had to force myself to finish. I will not read the fourth--it's a boycott. ;) When I hate the protagonist & want to throw her across the room, it's not a good sign, hot dragons or not. :)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments When I go look at what my other GR friends thought of it, most liked them more than I did. So don't listen to me. I guess I just don't like that chick-lit-ish type of book. It was just all so silly, at first it was cute, but then it got old quickly for me. And Aisling is just a complete ditz. Again, cute at the beginning, really annoying later. She falls into the paranormal world, with abilities she had no idea she has, but no one ever tells her the "rules" of the paranormal world or how to use her powers, or even what her damn powers ARE, so she can just go bumbling all over the place creating havoc & making social blunders.

By the 3rd book, her cute bumbling idiot act wore on my last nerve. I want my heroine to grow & learn & kick ass, not cause a zillion "funny" problems and need others to bail her ass out again and again.

Ooh...I think I'm bitter. Lol. Nah, I'm just a bitch who likes my protagonists smart & kick ass. :)

The one redeeming quality of the books for me was the demon dog Jim. He was freaking comical and honestly, he saves the books. But by the 3rd book, I needed some growth--Jim's pervo jokes can only carry a series so far. :)

message 35: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL! OK, I'll keep that in mind! I feel pretty much the same way about heroines! Usually, they get thrown into the world, but if they can't learn some stuff pretty quick, I find myself wondering why they're not in a coffin somewhere (or the equivalent!)

BUT, my new Nalini Singh psy/changeling arrived...and I put the Aisling book down for a bit (will read it next-next as the anthology with the new Singh short arrived at the same time!) I've really got to finish up my work tonight so I can just sit and read it, instead of taking another break to read just a chapter....

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I loved Jim in You Slay Me! I haven't read the rest of the books yet so I guess I'll space them out if she never grows. I like my characters kick-ass too. That's why I had a hard time with the last two Jane Jameson books by Molly Harper, they were too chick-litty. The first one was excellent though, lots of action at the end.

Judithe,I hope you enjoy BoJ!

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Have you guys read the Chicagoland Vampire books? OMG, I just finished the 3rd one last night and I am just in love with that series. The main character Merit is awesome: smart, funny, strong, snarky & kick ass. She don't need no stinkin' man saving her butt, thankyouverymuch. Probably my second fave series, after Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels.

I stayed up waaaaayyyy too late finishing the book, and now I'm sad it's over for a whole year. Boo hoo. I don't want to pick up another book right away and wash Merit & Ethan & the gang outta my head. Lol.

Judithe | 6566 comments @Laura Lulu~I haven't read either of those...Chicagoland Vampires or Ilona Andrews...hmm...more ideas to add for "firsts"!!

@Amy or "Ames"...I hope you enjoy BoJ!

Oh, I am!!! I'm telling myself to savor it...but also realize I don't HAVE to get up at a "decent" time tomorrow (summer vacation for the kids arrived TODAY! and my work starts LATE tomorrow) so guess what I'll probably be doing until the wee hours! Only writing now cause just had to check for work mail (and GR stuff) one last time before giving up on that for tonight...

Sandra | 25784 comments I just ordered Chicagoland Vamps the other day. Yeah!

Regarding Aisling I recommend you space them out. I agree Jim is hilarious and Drake is hot but baffling. I think of them as 3 star reads when I need something fluffy. But you're right, they can get annoying!

I've got the 4th one to read this month for a challenge and you can see I'm not rushing.

3 books/single female
One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress #2) by Jeaniene Frost 5/4/10
Black Magic Sanction (Rachel Morgan #8) by Kim Harrison5/19/10--So good! I wasn't so into a couple of books earlier in the series, but the last one (pre-ordered, and I hate not having a full set!) pulled me back, and this one was great! I'm looking forward to reading more in this series!
Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress) by Jeaniene Frost 5/7/10

2 books/a couple
Noah (The Nighwalkers #5) by Jacquelyn Frank5/16/10--This seems to be the end of the series...it was fun, but had a little trouble believing the change in the heroine over the course of the book...maybe need to re-read it a little more carefully, but not immediately.
No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark #3) by Kresley Cole 5/12/10

2 books/no person or human
The Treasure Keeper (Drakon #4) by Shana Abe5/14/10-I sometimes find this series hard to follow, and find myself rereading passages, but do enjoy it and find Abe's writing a change from a lot of the authors I read. Quite curious to read the next installment...too bad it won't be out soon at all.
Dark Gold (Dark #3) by Christine Feehan5/20/10=This was the first Feehan book and Carpathian book that I read...and the one that hooked me on the series. Nice to visit that world again.

3rd Challenge
Reading with Friends
The goal is to read 10 books chosen from the "Read" shelf of 10 GR friends of the participant.
10/10 completed
Thanks to all who added me! What fun this is....posting planned books & alternates in case already ordered books don't arrive...

(Updating here...new friend has one of the new books that arrived...;) )

1. Mind Game by Christine Feehan (Deanne)6/5/10Just loving this series! Great interaction, and also curious to know more about their lives together after they've gotten together. There are glimpses of the characters with established relationships, but would like to know more...maybe in a future book!
2. Street Game by Christine Feehan (Nita)6/3/10Communication...that's the word that kept running through my head all through this book. If they had communicated more honestly, they would have settled everything faster...but we wouldn't have had such a great story to read! Love the characters, and find them intriguing too. Very looking forward to reading more about the Ghostwalkers.
3. Murder Game by Christine Feehan (Mel W)6/6/10 Still lovin it!
4. The Nymph King by Gena Showalter (Rachel)6/1/10: I read the last 2 books out of order, so was just dying to see what happened in this one, and devoured it in a few hours. Lots of fun, though had expected a larger role by Poseidon from hints in the other books. Still, quite good overall!
5. First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost (Kelley Anne) 6/8/10: It was another fantastic visit to Frost's world. Loved seeing Bones and Cat again, and loved how the story of Spade and Denise developed. The end wasn't unexpected, but still satisfying. I look forward to more of these "side" stories!
6. Kiss of Heat by Lora Leigh (Delicious Dee)6/6/10 Hot!
7. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (Melanie)6/9/10 This is a favorite series of mine, and still a good read no matter how many times I pick it up. If you haven't read it yet, you definitely should! One more thing, it's set in my hometown--love actually "seeing" the places Mercy's at even though I haven't been there in years or lived there much longer than that!
8. Guilty Pleasures by Laurell Hamilton (Mette)6/4/10 Seemed rather nostalgic to re-read after so much has changed in Anita's world...really enjoyed this first novel.
9. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (Sara)6/10/10Ms. Harris is one of my favorite authors...always pre-order her books and can't wait for them to arrive. I haven't gone back to the start of Sookie's adventures in quite awhile, and it was really fun to visit again. She's a refreshingly "real" heroine, and I enjoy a few laughs at her take on the events happening in her life.
10. Poppy Done to Death by Charlaine Harris (Shelleyrae) :6/1/10:Loved it! This was the only Aurora Teagarden I hadn't read, and so enjoyed it! I really like her character and her outlook. (Shelleyrae)

Still a little time left, so will give it a try!

R- Real Murders by Charlaine Harris) 6/6/10 I went with my alternate because I decided I was more in the mood for a light murder with a touch of romance, and this fit the bill perfectly!
I-Into the Dark by Gena Showalter : 5/31/10--A collection of 3 short stories, interviews & preview-I enjoyed it but still don't have a very clear picture of her Lords of the Underworld...think I'll need to pick up a full novel to decide if I really do like it or not.
N- The Nymph King by Gena Showalter 6/1/10: I read the last 2 books out of order, so was just dying to see what happened in this one, and devoured it in a few hours. Lots of fun, though had expected a larger role by Poseidon from hints in the other books. Still, quite good overall!

Kiss of Heat (Read 6/7/10)
Kiss of Heat (Breeds, #4) by Lora Leigh

Post your interest and the book you are planning to read

A - I'm a big fan! I'm excited to read another of her books.

To complete:
Post the date when you've completed your book.

A - would definitely look at her other books, since I've enjoyed this one very much.

After reading, I'm still an "A" Now, I'm up-to-date on the Breed series. I haven't read any of her others, but really enjoyed these. I'm looking forward to reading Styx's story next. I prefer the more recent ones because I think they have stronger plots...more character building and action other than just between the main characters, which is the main thing I want in a story....and they are still just as hot! I'll keep reading for sure!
