Diane U (djuseless) I am currently reading The Storekeeper's Daughter by Wanda E. Brunstetter. This is the first book of hers that I have read and I am really enjoying it.

I just finished the Heritage of Lancaster County series by Beverly Lewis too. I have TONS of more Amish fiction books that I have purchased for my kindle that I am just anxious to read.

I read the lancaster series also i thought that was really good. i have not read the storekeeper's daughter but i did read the brides of webster county series those were very good.

message 3: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I downloaded that series too. I think that I have downloaded at least 12 full series of Amish fiction writers in the last month. That's over 36 books, on average. I have been buying the full series so that I can jump into the next book as soon as I am done with one.

message 4: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) It is handy to have the next book available - I just finished the third book in Beverly Lewis's Abram's Daughters series and I'm itching to read the fourth installment but unfortunately don't have a copy of it right now. I'm going to have to wait until my mum puts in an order with christianbook.com which seems to be the cheapest place to buy them right now.

In the meantime, I'm going to read the second book in the Heritage of Lancaster County series which I just got from BookMooch.

I've only read one of Wanda E. Brunstetter's books and it was one of her very early ones with Heartsong Presents and I didn't think it was very good - are her newer books any better? I have a couple on my shelf waiting to be read.

message 5: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) After reading your post, I am so thankful that I have an Amazon kindle so I do not have to order or go out and buy the next book. I can just download it and start reading it immediately. Sorry, I am not trying to rub it in either! :)

I am really enjoying The Storekeeper's Daughter! This is only the second series of Amish books that I have read so far so I don't have much to compare it to. I do like the fact that this series deals with problems within the Amish community as compared to an Amish person battling with the English world. It is a nice change!

I have all 5 books of Abram's Daughter's too. I was going to read that series next but I wanted to try a different author.

message 6: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) No worries, I don't think you're rubbing it in! I prefer the idea of having a real book to an eReader/Kindle, especially as I get a lot of my books second hand. How do prices compare on the Kindle to buying books new? My other problem is that I live in the UK and Christian fiction is harder to come by over here.

This series sounds quite interesting - I, too, prefer to read about the trials of being Amish rather than Amish vs. English lifestyles. I'll have to have a look out for more Brunstetter books.

I can definitely recommend the Abram's Daughters series whenever you get around to them. They're very gripping - lots of drama - but a bit sad in places. But definitely the kind of books where you want to have the next in the series at hand. I did feel like I was having a bit of a Beverly Lewis overload when I finished the 2nd and 3rd and went to read something completely different. I've had a whole month off from reading anything Amish but I have a couple I plan to read in August.

message 7: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I have not paid more than $9.99 for an Amish fiction book. I used to get lots of books second hand too but they take up less room in my kindle now. Plus I always have my "library" with me in case I change my mind on what to read next.

You talked me into it. I will read Abram's Daughters series next. I do take a break in between books since I just joined a book club in my neighborhood. We will get out next book to read on Monday. We just read Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. I really like her books and this one was Amish too so how could I not like it??!!

message 8: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am now reading, The Quilter's Daughter (Daughter's of Lancaster COunty #2) by Wanda E. Brunstetter.

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I've also just started reading a Wanda E. Brunstetter book, Plain and Fancy. I have to admit, I don't think her books are as good as those by Beverly Lewis and Amy Clipston. They're very simplistic and the dialogue sometimes seems rather stilted. But maybe that's because the books that I've read so far have been her earlier ones - maybe her writing has improved in her later books? She certainly seems to have a big fan base.

message 10: by pam (new)

pam (heidigirl5) | 18 comments has anyone read the love finds you in series in charm ohio or in sugar creek ohio i read the one in charm i thought it was really good some of the places they mention in the book really are in charm the hardware store and the restaunt.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Heidi, I haven't read either of those books but the "Love Finds You" line looks quite good - I must check out some of those books some day! I'm now reading The Confession by Beverly Lewis. It's been ages since I read the first book so I hope I remember all of the details.

message 12: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments I just finished reading A Time To Love by Barbara Cameron. It is due out in Oct. It was a great Amish read with a bit of a twist. I recieved it from Netgalley.

message 13: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments Has anyone else read the Amish mysteries written by P.L. Gaus? He lives in Wooster Ohio and his stories are based in and around New Berlin, Sugarcreek and Northeast Ohio. They are great!

message 14: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Hi Brenda, it's interesting that you mentioned Barbara Cameron's novel as I noticed it today when browsing christianbook.com and added it to my wishlist! Glad to hear that it's as good as it looks. Can I ask what Netgalley is?

message 15: by Brenda (last edited Aug 21, 2010 12:02PM) (new)

Brenda | 81 comments Rachel, Netgalley is a web site online that will provide you with e books to read and and in return you post a review about the book. Its a great way to read new books! I always love finding new to me authors to read and review. I am going to include the link for you, . Be sure and drop by my blog and read my review of A Time To Love it was a great book!

message 16: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Ooh, thanks for the link! I've just joined that website, it looks excellent :)

message 17: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Wow, this group became active! Yeah!

I was on vacation last week so I am getting caught up now on all the postings.

Thanks for suggesting Net Galley! I signed up and I am now going through all the available books to my request list.

A Time to Love sounds great too! Thanks for the suggestion!

I will also look into reading some books from P.L. Gaus. I love Amish books so I welcome any new authors that are available!

I am now reading Catching Fire. I finished reading The Quilter's Daughter by Wanda E. Brunstetter last week while I was on vacation. I cannot wait to read the third book of that series, The Bishop's Daughter.

message 18: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Brenda, I just joined Net Gallery and I have A Time to Love downloaded. Wow, that was quick! Question though, can you download more than one book at a time? I was approved for 4 others but I don't know how much time we have to read it or anything.

message 19: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I also have A Time to Love downloaded as well as A Simple Amish Christmas - how exciting! I've been editing my blog so that I can write actual reviews on it, rather than on GoodReads. Opportunity to review books + more Amish fiction = happy Rachel!

On another note, I'm currently reading The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out by Brennan Manning which my pastor and his wife recommended to me. It's quite interesting but I don't normally read much non-fiction so I'm reading it in short bursts.

message 20: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Rachel, I got that one as well. I am really waiting for another publisher to make their books available so I can get another series by Wanda E. Brunstetter. Now my problem is what to read next! LOL! What a wonderful problem to have, huh???!!!

Diane,
You can download all books that you have been approved to read. Depending on the publisher you have anywhere from 45 to 60 days to read and post your review. Glad you decided to join Netgalley, I have found several great books to read that way :)

message 22: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Hmmm ... it does not show anywhere on my kindle or on my netgalley account about a time limit. I am planning to start reading them after I finish Catching Fire and Mockingjay for my book club.

message 23: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments I always download my Netgalley books to my Adobe Digitial Editions files before adding them to my ereader and it always tells me in the corner how many days I have been given to keep the ebook.

message 24: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments This week I am reading The Devil Wears Plaid for a review and then I am going to start reading Leah's Choice by Marta Perry. I just know that its going to be a great book, because everything I have read by her is!

message 25: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Brenda wrote: "I always download my Netgalley books to my Adobe Digitial Editions files before adding them to my ereader and it always tells me in the corner how many days I have been given to keep the ebook."

I don't have that option on my kindle. I just transfer the file directly to it without using Adobe. What e-reader are you using?

message 26: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 81 comments I have the Aluratek Libre.

message 27: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) That may explain the difference! I would hate to start a book and have it be deleted since the time limit was up and I did not know it.

That is such a cool website! Thanks so much for telling us about it!

So how long does it take you to read a normal 300-400 page book? It takes me about a week (give or take a few days depending on what is going on). That is much quicker than I ever read a paper book too!

message 28: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Goodness, all this fuss with eReaders is confusing! I'm reading my ebooks on the computer and I'll admit it does strain your eyes...I think I'm going to have to swap between ebooks and paperbacks to give my eyes a rest.

At the moment, I'm reading A Simple Amish Christmas and really enjoying it. It'll be interesting to hear what you think of it when you finish, Diane.

Diane, I have never had them delete one on me. What I normally do is if I am getting close to expiration date I just go back to netgalley and redownload and it will renew if for an additional cycle. It seems to me once I request one I have access to it on my request page on Netgalley until I have reviewed it.

Diane,
It seems like I can read a book much quicker on my ereader not sure what the reason is, unless its the fact that its easier to transport so I am actually reading a book whenever I have a spare second :)

message 31: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I agree! I have my kindle with me all the time. I never carried a paper book around. I read at lunch at work, while waiting to pick up my hubby from work and even while I am cooking dinner. It's amazing how quickly those little reads add up!

Rachel, I give you credit for reading ebooks on the computer. I get headaches when I am on the computer too much (and too involved) at work. I can see how it would cause eye strain. The ereaders are so much better for that! The prices have gotten much better lately! You can get a kindle with wifi access for $139 or a B & N Nook for $149. I love my kindle but if you want to borrow ebooks from your local library, you need a Nook. You may want to add it to your Christmas list if you are an active reader. Just think of all the room you will save on your bookcase! LOL!

message 32: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Interesting, I always carry paper books around. Whenever I buy a handbag I always want to make sure that it can fit a book in it! I do need to make more time for reading, though...sometimes when I get in after a long day I just flop in front of the TV rather than picking up a book. I am always reading in the mornings now, which is helping me to slowly get through my To Be Read pile...now almost 100 books :/

I suppose I've got used to using a computer a lot to write essays and do research for my coursework, and computer screens are a lot better than they used to be - I've been reading the ebook in short bursts, maybe 50 pages at a time and it's been fine so far. I might consider getting a Kindle or something as I've noticed that the ebooks on Amazon.co.uk are very cheap. I do love paper books and discovering unusual or old books in second hand shops, but I may change my mind some day... But my problem is that if I love a book I want to keep a copy on my shelf - could get expensive after a while!

Anyway, I'm really enjoying the Vannetta Chapman book, definitely getting me in a Christmassy mood!

message 33: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I agree, that I will not buy paper books now that I have a kindle. I used to pick up books for under $1 at garage sales and if I did not get around to reading it, who cares. But using ebooks is just as dangerous, if not more. It is soooo easy to just click Buy Me and then you easily realize that you have spent $50 because you had to get the whole series and not just the first book.

Yes, Amazon just opened a kindle book store in the UK. Have you considered downloading the kindle app for PC and using that? That way if you ever get a hand held kindle you can tarnsfer over all your books to it? Then you can take advantage of all the free books that become available over on

booksontheknob.blogspot.com

Just and idea! I am not trying to enable you to purchase one, although I love mine!!! LOL!

Hi, Ladies.
Someone asked me to join the group - so I did. I hope that's all right! Are authors allowed? : ) I love seeing all this discussion about books and Amish books in particular. Since my first book is A Simple Amish Christmas, I'm looking forward to reading more Christmas books . . . in particular and Amy Clipston's. It looks beautiful. I also want to read Barbara Cameron's (someone mentioned already) as it looks intriguing. And I haven't decided whether to put them on my kindle or order the paperbacks! Happy reading everyone.

message 35: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Hello Vannetta, I'm glad you found us!

I will be reading your book next! I am currently reading Mockingjay for my book club (we are reading the whole series). I have some extra days off for Labor Day weekend and I will have them all to myself so I should get plenty of reading done. I really miss reading Amish fiction when I don't read it for a little while.

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Hi Vannetta, thanks for joining is! Marta Perry also pops in sometimes so authors are definitely welcome :)

I'm also looking forward to reading Amy Clipston's Christmas book, I've loved all of her books so far. Barbara Cameron's series looks good too, I have a copy from NetGalley that I'm looking forward to reviewing.

Once I get some of my reading for English out of the way I'm planning on reading the last book in Beverly Lewis's "Heritage of Lancaster County" series which I checked out of the library earlier this month.

message 37: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Yay, a new member! That's lovely that you found a book that got you back into reading. Sometimes it is hard to find the time and pleasure in just reading a book when you're out of school and in the "real world." I'm now a full-time university student and was so busy with studying and my newfound social life last semester that I mainly read kids books because although I wanted to read I found it hard to find the time to read anything more substantial. Now I'm really making the effort to read something other than textbooks - and I'm sure you guys will help!

Right now I'm taking a little break from Amish books (I find that too much of one genre makes me sick of it) and I'm reading a book by one of my favourite authors, An Irresistible Impulse by Barbara Delinsky. A little light romance, hopefully it'll be just as good as her other books.

message 38: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Rachel, I have one of Barbara Delinsky's books, Not My Daughter. I have not read it yet but it is downloaded to my kindle.

I am almost done A Simple Amish Christmas so I should be writing a review for Net Galley this week, if I can find the time!! LOL!

message 39: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Ooh, I haven't read that one yet but it looks good. My favourites from her are Family Tree and Shades of Grace.

I've just started A Time to Love by Barbara Cameron and am loving it! Thanks for the recommendation, Brenda!

message 40: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I should be able to finish A Simple Amish Christmas tonight so I can start A Time to Love also!

I just grabbed Family Tree for $0.99 for my kindle yesterday! What a deal!

message 41: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am now reading A Time to Love!

message 42: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Wow, that's an excellent price for a book! Are there often cheap book offers for Kindles? I suppose that gets around the fact that you can't go into a second-hand book shop and buy "used" ebooks!

I'm completely loving A Time to Love, maybe this will turn out to be another favourite author for me...

message 43: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments I just finished Marta Perry's book Hide In Plain Sight. Did anyone else read this? And what did you think?

message 44: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Camille~

I downloaded it for free for my kindle when I got it at Christmas last year but I have not read it yet! It's on my to-read list!

Diane

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I think I got a free ebook of Hide in Plain Sight from Harlequin a while back but I've yet to read it - thanks for reminding me that I still have it!

message 46: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I am currently reading The Bishop's Daughter. It is the last of the Daughter's of Lancaster County series. It is a little weird because there is about 15 years between this one and the last one, The Quilter's Daughter.

message 47: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) 15 years in the book or 15 years between the author writing the books?

message 48: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) 15 years in the story of the book. It's just weird that the characters in this book are in their early 20's and were "kinner" in the other book. I think I have it figured out now though!

message 49: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Diane U & Rachel, I did the same thing, got it free for my kindle. When you get a chance to read it let me know what you think. :)

message 50: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Sure will Camille! Marta Perry pops into this group often so you just may run into her in here someday!
