Bernadette (bern51) Sounds good

message 5: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I'm definitely in, as long as we don't make this a month-long read. I want as much time as possible, because the last time I read this book, I had to read it in a matter of days, which was quite torturous.

not at all- we can decide the best pace for everyone-

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
I am leaning more towards a page amount- say 20 pages a day- not sure how long the chapters are- if they are short- we can go by chapter- as there are several editions out and page numbers can be different

Lisa (lmmmml) This sounds like an interesting read, I will try. Depends upon your schedule. Reading War and Peace right now, so it is dominating my time.

well- we can arrange the schedule to meet needs of all who wish to join- this will be a "Multi-Book Reader:Friendly Buddy Read" WOW- how's that for a new adjective!

Or, an MBR FBR, sounds really funky, doesn't it??

message 13: by Helena (last edited Feb 04, 2011 09:12PM) (new)

Helena I would definitely like to read this- I’ve had it in the TBR pile for quite some time. I’m reading Crime & Punishment at the moment, so it might be a couple of weeks (or four LOL) before I could join in discussion...

not aprob Helen- I will keep the "signing up phrase" going until 2/26 and then we can start on 2/27..
are those dates acceptable to all? if not- please do not hesitate to let me know- as I am just one of several in this buddyread!

message 16: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I tried reading this, but I couldn't get into it. I tried Anya Seton books too. but alas not much interest in these as well.

2/27 works well for me, I should be finished with my current tomes by then!

It is very interesting. Easy read, just daunting due to the size. Rather like a Russian soap opera!
I requested my copy of The Name of the Rose from Library loan, hope it makes it before we start!

War & Peace is on my list for this year too... I’m enjoying Crime & Punishment thus far (I love the names)!

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lmmmml) Oh,don't delay! I can catch up, unless you guys read super fast!

I just got my copy of The Name of the Rose- how does 3/1/11 sound as a start date? one chapter each 2 days?a nice leisurely buddyread?

message 27: by 4cats (new)

4cats (fourcats) i'm going to try to join in, tried to read it years ago, and have just recently picked it up at a secondhand book shop so will try to remember to start reading it on the 1st march.

message 28: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) I did read it several years ago. I thought it was good, but have too many stacked up waiting for me now to try a re-read. :-) I will check in from time to time. I'll be interested to see what you all think of it.

Susan (chlokara) Rick wrote: "I just got my copy of The Name of the Rose- how does 3/1/11 sound as a start date? one chapter each 2 days?a nice leisurely buddyread?"

I tried this many years ago, and could not get through it. However, with the buddy system I might have more success. So, I will join. A slow read of a chapter every two days sounds good, except, perhaps I should ask how long the chapters are.

I think the slower pace and the discussion (without the threat of marks for participation etc.) will make this much more interesting and less of a burden.

I am ridiculously compulsive about books that I love so, if I like this one, I'll read more than that...that being said, I like discussions more when they are broken down into parts of the book, rather than trying to discuss the whole thing at once.

I dn'tthink the chapers are overly long- but if there are some that arelonger- we can always adjust shedule to accommodate them- 3-4 days for longer chapters- key thing is to make sure everyone is in agreement and comfortable!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds great. The Name of the Rose on March 1st. Agreed and comfortable. :)

message 34: by Diane S (new)

Diane S ☔ Just checked out this book from the library. This is one I have wanted to read for a long time, so I will try to join in.

message 35: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (bookdivasreads) I'd love to join in on this and a 3/1/11 start date sounds great. It's been awhile since I read this and should be interesting to re-read it after so many years.

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
well 3/1 it is! how about CH 1- discuss it for 2 days, Ch2 3/3 and so on? or is that too slow?

message 37: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) That's a good pace for me.

message 38: by Lisa (new)

discussion is great too! helps to give a greater insight into what those of us who have not read the book yet react to!

message 42: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 86 comments I have no time to re-read it, but I have The Key to The Name of the Rose: Including Translations of All Non-English Passagescoming up soon on my TBR. Would discussion of this supplementary book be welcome?

I would welcome that, especially if you can help us out with the non-English passages. I've heard that this is the most difficult part of reading the book. I plan on spending a lot of time using the Bing translator.

message 44: by Lisa (last edited Feb 24, 2011 07:55PM) (new)

Lisa (lmmmml) Oh goodness, I had know idea that there was non-English passages. Should make for an interesting read! What is the non-English? Latin?

message 45: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 86 comments Re non-English--Yes, it is mostly Latin. The Key to The Name of the Rose has every non-English phrase used translated.

Manybooks Shomeret wrote: "I have no time to re-read it, but I have The Key to The Name of the Rose: Including Translations of All Non-English Passagescoming up soon on my TBR. Would discussion of this suppleme..."

Yes, yes, I would like that. Most of the non-English passages are Latin, I believe, but there are also passages in Greek, Italian etc.

message 47: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) Question: having actually opened the book now, I note that there are no chapter numbers. The book is divided into seven days, with each day divided into smaller sections (terce, sext, etc). Am I assuming correctly that each "day" constitutes a chapter for our reading purposes?

But I'd like to do a reread if that's allowed.
